Awareness And Application Of Differentiated Instruction In The Elementary Classroom Action Research Assignment At A Suburban St. Paul, Minnesota School, Tammi S. Nelson
Awareness And Application Of Differentiated Instruction In The Elementary Classroom Action Research Assignment At A Suburban St. Paul, Minnesota School, Tammi S. Nelson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Differentiated instruction is an educational approach that provides instructional strategies to accommodate students based upon their individual learning needs. In traditional classroom settings, many teachers focus on the needs of their classroom as a whole and often lose sight of the individual students. Students who differ from the norm present in their classrooms often struggle as the instruction does not accommodate their learning style, cultural background or possibly other variables. This research examined classrooms and the use of differentiated instruction. The focus was primarily on the classroom instructors' awareness of differentiated instruction and their ability to incorporate differentiated instruction through …
Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling
Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling
Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship
This study argues the efficacy of the phenomenological cultural work of a visual culture archaeology that liberates a political and critical identity, resistant to domination, authoring social change and its own agency through multiple and incommensurable positions. Built upon Foucauldian premises, visual culture archaeology is developed as a methodology for discursive un-naming and re-naming, and emerges from the inherence and attenuation of inscripted meanings in the reinterpretation of identity during a postmodern confluence of ideas and images. The hybridized representation of the African American in Western visual culture has been unique in the effort by some to define us over …

The Introduction Of Recurrent Funding To Non-Government Schools In Western Australia : National Statesmanship Or Provincial Pragmatism?, Heather De Leuil
The Introduction Of Recurrent Funding To Non-Government Schools In Western Australia : National Statesmanship Or Provincial Pragmatism?, Heather De Leuil
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
State aid to private schools has been a controversial issue in Australia since the beginning of European settlement. This was true in all colonies' and remains a national issue in the twenty-first century. At various times colonial governments chose to provide to private schools, principally those operated by the Catholic and major churches. However as the colonies grew and statehood loomed, the of the day sought to withdraw their aid from private schools and their funding on the growing non-denominational, public school systems.

Learning The Documentary Lesson: Theory And Practice In English, Stuart M. Bender
Learning The Documentary Lesson: Theory And Practice In English, Stuart M. Bender
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research investigates the problem of teaching documentary texts in the secondary English classroom in Western Australia. Historical studies of the subject indicate that it serves three functions; ethical training, aesthetic cultivation and rhetorical training. Previous research from the governmental perspective has investigated the problems associated with Literary texts, popular television drama and personal-response essay writing; it emerges that these familiar pedagogical activities are deployed in classrooms to function as opportunities to engage students in ethical training, often at the expense of the latter two functions. This research project is a post-positivist theoretical discussion supplemented by qualitative data in the …
A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt
A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research focuses on understanding people who have chosen to learn throughout their lives. A broad question guided this investigation: What is the rich, lived, lifelong learning experience from the individual’s perspective? This question allowed each participant freedom to explore and define issues he/she considered important relative to lifelong learning. Twelve lifelong learners from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and experience were serially selected using maximum variation sampling. Most qualitative research uses a priori questions aimed at a specific topic, limiting participants’ discussion. In this study, however, grand tour questions prompted each participant to offer information about lifelong learning …
A Historical Study Of Nurse Anesthesia Education In Nebraska, Sharon Loseke Hadenfeldt
A Historical Study Of Nurse Anesthesia Education In Nebraska, Sharon Loseke Hadenfeldt
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) was the first advanced practice nursing specialty, dating to the late Nineteenth Century in the United States. Nurses were first recruited and trained by surgeons to administer anesthesia beginning in the 1870’s in the United States. Apprenticeship training by either a surgeon, or another nurse, was the initial method of anesthesia training for the early nurse anesthetist. Post-graduate training programs began to appear within some hospitals at approximately 1910. The hospital-based nurse anesthesia programs became more standardized with the implementation of an accreditation program in 1952. Beginning in 1971 nurse anesthesia programs began to …

Another Shade Of Brown: A Historical Study Of “Brown V. Board Of Education” And Its Impact On The Education Of Mexican Americans In Edinburg, Texas In The Rio Grande Valley Of South Texas, Beverly F. Ashley-Fridie
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The decision of Brown v. Board of Education to desegregate schools in the United States fifty-two years ago was approached with hesitation by many school districts. For half of those fifty-two years, school desegregation proceeded at a snail's pace in southern and northern school districts as civil rights lawyers waged trench warfare in federal courts. Even though it was "law," many school districts ignored the mandate or suffered from the "with all deliberate speed" syndrome. The focus of this study was to investigate the educational segregation and desegregation of students in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District (ECISD).

The Power Of "Estudentprotest:" A Study Of Electronically-Enhanced Student Activism, James Patrick Biddix
The Power Of "Estudentprotest:" A Study Of Electronically-Enhanced Student Activism, James Patrick Biddix
Dissertations
Both student activism and Internet use by students are among the fastest growing variables in national reports of student engagement (Astin, 2004; Levine & Cureton, 1998b). This study introduces the term estudentprotest to describe how contemporary student activists use information and communication technologies (ICTs) for protest. A sequential mixed methods design (Creswell, 2003) was utilized. This approach involved obtaining statistical information from a sample for descriptive and outcome analyses, using the results to suggest nodes for an investigation of social networks, and finally interviewing individuals to explore those results in more depth. This study found that today¿s student protests begin …

Education In Transition: Church And State Relationships In Utah Education, 1888-1933, Scott Clair Esplin
Education In Transition: Church And State Relationships In Utah Education, 1888-1933, Scott Clair Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Utah's current educational systems were largely shaped by a transitional era that occurred during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A time when the region itself moved from territorial to state status, the dominant religion in the area, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), likewise changed in its role in Utah society. Previously dominating most aspects of life, the Church was forced to reevaluate its place in society due to greatly increased secular power and context. Educational changes, as harbingers of larger societal shifts, are illustrative of such paradigm changes. During the four decade period …

Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick
Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Australia has a long history of what has been pilloried as ‘cultural cringe’, and of bemoaning its isolation from ‘overseas’ developments. In recent years, the valuing of ideas and practices from elsewhere has been transformed under the rubric of ‘world best practice’ within a global economy and culture, both in political discourse generally, and in a raft of reports on the need for reform of teacher education in particular (see Vick, 2006a). Here, I document overseas borrowings in the form of texts in teacher education during the first half of last century, focusing on teachers colleges in Sydney, Melbourne and …

The "Great Experiment" And The Michigan State Normal School: An Institutional History Analysis, Ronald D. Flowers
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the historic development of teacher training in the western world and the United States, focusing on the establishment and institutionalization of teacher preparation in the normal schools of the mid-nineteenth century. This study presents the institutional building blocks that formed the foundation of teacher preparation in America.
In addition, this study examines these building blocks as they became manifest in the establishment of the Michigan State Normal School from its founding in 1849 through its transition to a four-year college in 1900.
The Unknown Factor: Helping Students Understand Mendelian Genetics And The Nature Of Science, Chris Robinson
The Unknown Factor: Helping Students Understand Mendelian Genetics And The Nature Of Science, Chris Robinson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teaching science concepts in the same chronological order that the knowledge was developed by the scientific community is an effective way of promoting understanding of the concept as well as a greater appreciation for scientific inquiry. This activity mentally engages students and provides them a sense of discovery that Gregor Mendel must have felt over 150 years ago when he came to understand inheritance. Finally, by putting Mendelian genetics into a historical perspective, students will gain a greater understanding of scientific processes and the history and nature of science. This activity promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, C, E …

The Evolution Of Catholic Schools In The Diocese Of Grand Rapids, Michigan: A Case Study, Bernard T. Stanko
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This longitudinal case study examined the origins, growth, and development of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The purpose of this study was to understand how the Catholic schools evolved over time.
Four eras between 1833 and 2005 were investigated and described. Each era corresponds with changes to the physical size of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. These periods also correspond to sociological events that were also occurring. Data on Catholic schools were collected for each era. A conceptual framework was applied that considered the institutional environment in which the schools were founded and the task environment …
A 5-Stage Cross-Cultural Reentry Training Model: Proactive Curriculum And Training Giude For Exchange Organization Representatives, Sponsor Teachers And Returning Student Sojourners, Stacey Anne Howell
All Graduate Projects
This project is the result of an exploration into the process and product of cross-cultural reentry; that is, reentry into one's country of origin following an extended stay in a host country. The history of reentry training programs in the United States was researched, the process of cross-cultural adjustment was explored, and research involving the identity development of adolescents and the effects of stress on adolescents and adolescent sojourners was reviewed. Following a review of the research in these areas, an extensive five-stage curriculum model for cross-cultural reentry training was designed. The curriculum model includes a complete training outline, a …

A Delicate Dance: Autoethnography, Curriculum, And The Semblance Of Intimacy, Laura Marshall Jewett
A Delicate Dance: Autoethnography, Curriculum, And The Semblance Of Intimacy, Laura Marshall Jewett
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Have you ever had a dream that you shared an intimate moment—grew close—with someone who in your waking life you barely knew; or that you knew a language that outside of your dream you did not understand? Or if you are a teacher, have you ever dreamt that you connected with a student—actually taught them something? If upon waking you have felt the residual yet potent ephemeral as-ifness of such closeness, you have experienced what is the focus of this study: the semblance of intimacy. This dissertation, via autoethnography, couples experiences teaching multicultural education and learning to zydeco dance in …
A Historical Examination Of The Tradition Of Experience In The Teaching Of Literature In English Education, Deborah Davis Reed
A Historical Examination Of The Tradition Of Experience In The Teaching Of Literature In English Education, Deborah Davis Reed
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
By examining major documents for tensions regarding the teaching of literature in the field of secondary English education, this dissertation addressed the following questions: (1) What assumptions about learning and knowledge helped to shape the field? (2) To what extent does the field demonstrate consistency or change in its discourse defined-positions? and (3) How might current conversations in the field fit within a larger historical, social, and political context, thus equipping English educators to better articulate and situate their own pedagogical beliefs? Stephen Toulmin’s (1958) model of an argument served as a means of analyzing the field’s ongoing conversation about …
