Crisis Preparedness And Professional Quality Of Life: Exploring The Influence Of Self-Efficacy, Mental Well-Being And Job Satisfaction In Crisis Counselors, Courtney Pierce

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Crisis services are a growing division of mental health programs. While recent CACREP updates in 2009 and 2016 have placed an emphasis on crisis preparation in counselor education programs, many counselors are not adequately prepared for work in crisis settings. Inadequate preparation could heighten counselors’ risk for burnout and secondary traumatic stress, posing a threat not only to their well-being, but also to the advancement of crisis programs. It is important to investigate protective factors for crisis counselors to support their well-being and the viability of essential crisis services. Existing literature examines individual and organizational factors that predict and protect …

What Happened To The Creative In The Creative Curriculum?, Lacey Peters, Mark K. Nagasawa, Maria Mavrides Calderon, Abigail Kerlin, Helen Frazier, Beth Ferholt, Erica Clarke Yardy, Margie Brickley, Alisa Algava

Straus Institute for Thriving Children & Families

This empirically-grounded commentary questions the basis for New York City Public Schools’ (NYCPS) adoption of the Teaching Strategies products—the Creative Curriculum (CC) and Teaching Strategies GOLD—as the mandated curriculum and assessment systems for early childhood education (ECE) programs administered by the New York City Public Schools. In an analysis shaped by our hybrid positionalities as early childhood educators, parents, policy makers, and researchers, we argue that this decision is a local case of neoliberalism’s simultaneous narrowing of educational quality and a transfer of public funding into private hands under the guise of the free market. Our commentary, …

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

BackgroundThe 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, has given individual states more capacity to legislate abortion. State legislators have and continue to design and pass laws that restrict or ban abortion, often naming exceptions based on specific reasons (i.e., fetal health, woman's health, rape). Given that these reasons often do not align with those reported by abortion-seekers, it is crucial to assess whether the U.S. public accurately understands why people seek abortions. This study explored a sample of U.S. adults' perceptions of the three most common reasons why someone might get an abortion.MethodsWe analyzed open-ended data …
