Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
International students’ difficulties and unique needs have been increasingly explored in professional literature, reflecting the expanding number of international students enrolling in the United States’ higher education institutions. Language difficulties appear to be the most challenging issue for international students from non-English speaking countries as they become marginalized as a linguistic minority on campus. Few researchers have focused specifically on understanding international students’ experiences of being voiceless due to language barriers, nor have they postulated the nature of their adaptation process. This grounded theory study aimed to investigate international students’ stress and coping experiences with language barriers and develop a …

Researchers and educators historically have administered surveys to collect data, track perceptions, and/or solicit opinions from undergraduates, including internationals, attending American institutions. To promote survey responses’ generalizability, the present report advocates the following recommendations for best practices in survey administration. 1) Use stratified random sampling methodology to identify which specific subset of students from the campus’ source population to invite to the survey. 2) Strive for, design, and implement an administration process that achieves a high response rate (preferably above 90%). 3) Choose an incentive that is truly salient for survey invitees to recruit and reward them for their time. …
A Model Of International Student Retention, Dylan Rust
A Model Of International Student Retention, Dylan Rust
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
This paper presents a model of international student retention influences that affect these students’ decisions to remain at a university in the United States. The levels of the model, in order of importance, are intentions/background characteristics and finances, academic integration, cultural identity, and social integration. Intentions/background characteristics and finances are related to and influence each other in terms of their impact on retention. While multiple retention theories focus on the socialization of college students, this model posits that financial and academic factors have greater influence. The paper also discusses the influence that being a non-immigrant visa status international student has …

This grounded theory investigation theorizes how service abroad programs can promote global citizenship development among university students. The analysis of interviews, annotated artifacts, and class assignments delineates the theory that participation in service abroad provides opportunities to form connections to the host community and empathize with people who are different, thereby promoting personal paradigm shifts from caring about the self to caring about the collective. Service offers an entry point into a host community that enables students to embrace a wider global perspective, form a better understanding of social justice, experience profound personal growth, as well as develop human connections …
A College Choice Model For Chinese International Undergraduate Students Studying In The U.S., Ian D. Baker, Seyoung Hong
A College Choice Model For Chinese International Undergraduate Students Studying In The U.S., Ian D. Baker, Seyoung Hong
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Students hailing from China now represent the largest single international undergraduate student population on college campuses in the United States (U.S). We advance a theoretical model to better conceptualize the college choice process of Chinese international undergraduate students. Utilizing Hossler and Gallagher’s (1987) college choice model as a foundation, our model theorizes that the college choice process for Chinese international undergraduate students can be understood as the combination of three distinct phases: predisposition, search, and choice. Our research advances the scholarly literature by positing a conceptual model of college choice for one of the largest international student populations in the …

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, leading to a broad range of neurological issues. Individuals with ALS experience progressive muscle weakness, dysphagia, slurred speech, and impaired movement and cognition. In addition to physical symptoms, around 15-20% of individuals with ALS also develop frontotemporal dementia (FTD). There are limited interventions to slow cognitive decline in this specific population. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet has been associated with slower cognitive decline and reduced risk in neurodegenerative disease among older adults; however, its effects have not been …

Exploring The Role Of Patient Feedback In Medical Education, Hovhannes John Hayrapetyan, Stella Hayrapetyan, Diane L. Levine Md
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background: Patient feedback is increasingly recognized as a valuable yet underutilized component of medical student assessment. When collected reliably, delivered with specificity, and embedded in a supportive learning environment, feedback can improve communication, professionalism, and patient-centered behaviors while promoting reflective, self-directed learning. However, studies highlight limitations including inadequate longitudinal evidence for sustained improvement, inconsistent use of structured tools, and insufficient faculty guidance. Instruments such as the Patient Feedback in Clinical Practice (PFCP) questionnaire show promise but require broader testing, and links between learner feedback and patient outcomes remain weak.
Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, …
