A Brief History Of The Development Of Physical Education, Louis A. Zinsmeister Jul 1928

A Brief History Of The Development Of Physical Education, Louis A. Zinsmeister

Bachelors’ Theses

When one wishes to inquire into the origin, or at least into the early forms of physical development, one turns to the early civilized nations for material and information. Knowledge of the early Egyptians, the Persians, and the Greeks comes to us through historians who deciphered the writings of these ancient peoples, so that we now know something about their lives and habits. The earliest forms of physical labor were those connected with hunting, tilling the soil, building homes, and warfare. As each of these developed, man also progressed in skill and became more and more proficient in the use …

Organization And Curriculum For Mentally Retarded Children, Alice M. Olwell Jul 1928

Organization And Curriculum For Mentally Retarded Children, Alice M. Olwell

Bachelors’ Theses

The mentally retarded or exceptional child is one of the most puzzling personalities met with in our schools. He stands near the dividing line between normalcy and feeblemindedness, and his future happiness or tragic discouragement, and often ruin, depends upon the attitude of the school and the teachers towards his shortcomings during his childhood and adolescence. He may be trained to healthy competition in the field of labor with his normal brother, or he may reach adulthood an utter incompetent, a potential criminal, a moral degenerate, an unfortunate ne'er-do-well.

The Need Of A Working Text, Elizabeth L. Newman Jul 1928

The Need Of A Working Text, Elizabeth L. Newman

Bachelors’ Theses

No doubt the idolatry of subject matter originated in those centuries v,hen there was no effective means for the dissemination of knowledge. The multitude could not possibly have access to the intellectual resources. These were stored up, in manuscripts. Of these there were at best a few; and it required long and toilsome preparation to be able to do anything with them. A high priesthood of learning, which guarded the treasury of truth and which doled it out to the masses under severe restrictions was the inevitable expression of these conditions.

Silent Reading In The Fourth And Fifth Grades, Margaret Neis Jun 1928

Silent Reading In The Fourth And Fifth Grades, Margaret Neis

Bachelors’ Theses

Among the various subjects taught in the elementary schools reading is of the most fundamental importance. It is the basic tool through which history, geography, science, literature. and art are mastered. Indeed man's knowledge would be very meager it he followed the Socratic method of the early Greeks and taught only by word of mouth. The oratorical method used in ancient times has been supplanted by the printing press, the herald of a new civilization. Today man is controlled to a large degree by the printed word. Consequently if the interpretation of the printed word is faulty the approach to …

The Place Of Extra-Curricular Activities In The Junior High School, Borgia Rettler Jun 1928

The Place Of Extra-Curricular Activities In The Junior High School, Borgia Rettler

Bachelors’ Theses

"Extra-Curricular Activities" is becoming a familiar phrase. It refers to "those legitimate activities which ·are not provided for in that part of the school program which is usually designated as the curriculum." (1) The phrase is apparently new, yet the activities it refers to · are, in elementary form, as old as our educational system itself. · The Friday afternoon exercises, the spell-downs, and athletics under various forms, are of long standing in American schools. Previous to the last ten or fifteen years, however, such activities were carried on in an unsystematic way and consequently had no definite plan of …

The Platoon School As Modified In The Cass Street Rotary School, Anne E.M. Mccusker Jun 1928

The Platoon School As Modified In The Cass Street Rotary School, Anne E.M. Mccusker

Bachelors’ Theses

The aims of education are determined by the needs of society. In our first school, those of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the American colonists demanded that their children should have at least the rudiments of an education. The most important aim of instruction was to enable children to take their place in the community as God fearing, Bible reading citizens. After the Revolution came social and industrial development. The aims of education changed. The curriculum expanded. The twentieth century ushered in a great industrial and social age with new and peculiar problems. The school again expanded its curriculum …

Vocational Guidance Administration, Mary Elizabeth Keenan Jun 1928

Vocational Guidance Administration, Mary Elizabeth Keenan

Bachelors’ Theses

As listed in the United States Census of occupations and home making the term "vocational" comprises all gainful occupations. (1) In order properly to understand the administration of vocational guidance, a practical survey of section 11 of the Smith-Hughes Act, of 1917, is necessary as a background to the genesis of this movement which promises to form the major problems of our schools for an indefinite period.

Nutrition Of The Elementary School Child, Lucy I. Welch Jun 1928

Nutrition Of The Elementary School Child, Lucy I. Welch

Bachelors’ Theses

Realizing how this greatest of all national resources has been squandered, the people of today are aroused to the need of conservation of the race. They realize that the future of the country depends on the strength and vigor of the children of today. This realization, that the child must have a body, "as splendid as a king's castle -- with food that serves his needs, with play and rest and the habits which shall safeguard him through life," (2) is the chief reason for the development of the health and nutrition work.

Reading Outside Of School, Marion E. Daley Jun 1928

Reading Outside Of School, Marion E. Daley

Bachelors’ Theses

Thomas, in "The Teaching of English in Secondary Schools" says, "When we English teachers consider the infinitely small amount of reading our pupils can do in school hours, in contrast with the infinitely large amount they can do outside of school~ and will do in the years that, in varying number, stretch far beyond their graduation days, when we realize the opportunities that we have in directing them to books that will fill their lives with a loftier ideal and open to them an ampler range of thought and emotion, we are indeed false to our trust if we do …

The Status Of Teacher Rating In Utah, Charles P. Mcgregor May 1928

The Status Of Teacher Rating In Utah, Charles P. Mcgregor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any satisfactory amount of literature or information as to the condition of teacher rating in Utah is not available. The writer therefore has felt justified in making a search for such information.

Education is one of the biggest businesses of the state, a business with which nearly all are concerned. It is a business which calls for vast sums of money to finance its cause in buildings and equipment. A part of this equipment is the teacher, and a most vital part, for it rests largely upon the teacher to shape the livest of boys and girls into worthy citizens. …
