The Home Room Of The Junior High School, Gertrude M. Dean Jul 1932

The Home Room Of The Junior High School, Gertrude M. Dean

Bachelors’ Theses

It is my purpose, in this paper, to discuss the unit of the junior high school, the Home Room.

I have consulted the leading authorities on secondary education, junior high schools, and home rooms, in order that I may quote from the material that they have written on this subject.

I have found that much has been published in the last five years concerning the importance of the home room. I have obtained my material from books written about junior high schools, from books which discuss extra-curricular activities, from magazines, and from pamphlets.

I shall present my subject by giving …

Correlation Of Art With The School Subjects Of The Upper Grades, Irene E. Cappon Jul 1932

Correlation Of Art With The School Subjects Of The Upper Grades, Irene E. Cappon

Bachelors’ Theses

Art pervades every phase of life. Beauty is universal in its appeal. All children seem to delight in form and color from infancy. There seems to be a natural impulse in all to express· thoughts and feelings creatively and constructively through pencils, crayons, paints, clay, wood, and other media. All children find pleasure in seeing their efforts take visible form.

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox Jul 1932

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox

Bachelors’ Theses

The fundamental origin of all students' activities not covered by the curriculum is really a physical urge, round even among primitive people; namely, the element or
play. Play activities are characteristic of primitive people, especially during the adolescent period. Ceremonials and mysteries, the basic features of the lodge, are derivations of this natural urge. It is the ritual idea that helps to keep alive many secret orders, and it is this same ritual idea that makes a dynamic appeal to adolescence. Successful leadership of youth requires an intimate knowledge or the basic appeal of adolescence.

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker Jul 1932

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker

Bachelors’ Theses

For a century arithmetic has been a popular subject in the elementary schools, and has consumed more time than any other subject. The war had an effect in reducing this time on arithmetic, largely due to the war-time emphasis on health, food production, back-of-the-line morale, and kindred subjects. More recently, school activities and playground work have come in for a reasonable share of the school time. The Twenty-ninth Yearbook recognizes the child as the center of interest, and the final criterion of all values being the effect any technique of teaching or any content of instruction has on the child. …

A Course Of Study In Health Education For The Seventh And Eighth Grades Of The College Junior High School Of Pittsburg, Kansas, Anna Yates Stoffer

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Department of Home Economics of the Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg is responsible for teaching a course in Health Education to the seventh and eighth grade students of the training school. Since the department had been concerned with the planning of a course of study which would be uniform from year to year, it seemed fitting that a detailed study should be made of the health habits and knowledge of the students in the two grades that information gathered therefrom should be used in formulating a course of study. Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray Jun 1932

Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study does not attempt to decide which is the better method of presenting grammar to the high school pupil; that is a question which would require much more extensive research to answer. We are interested primarily in determining and evaluating the success in college formal grammar of students who have had formal grammar in high school as compared with the success of those who have not had high school formal grammar. The study, therefore, is an attempt to show the differences existing in preparation for college formal grammar on the part of the students who have had high school …

Safety Education In The Elementary Grades, Lilly E. Schaefer Jun 1932

Safety Education In The Elementary Grades, Lilly E. Schaefer

Bachelors’ Theses

It i the primary purpose of the school to enable the oncoming generation to adjust itself to the natural and social environment in which it must live and work. Managers of large industries are realizing more and more that the problem of industrial safety will not be solved until the idea of safety has been incorporated into the community life, that is; until safety instruction is given in the schools, and until safety is established in the thought and life of the people on the same basis as good health. The fact that two-thirds of all the accidental deaths occur …

English Didactic Books Of Manners, Margie Mary Schumacher Jun 1932

English Didactic Books Of Manners, Margie Mary Schumacher

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to collect and investigate material in order to determine the evolution of the didactic books of manners written by two authors of the middle of the 16th century, namely: "The Scholemaster" written by Roger Ascham, and "Euphues" written by John Lyly, to analyze their functions as didactic works in the literary field, to determine their influence upon literary successors, also to reveal their influence upon the people of the time, their idea of a gentleman. In short, the object of this thesis is to show that these two books were of a pedagogical nature …

Play In Education, Mary Gratiana Mcparland Jun 1932

Play In Education, Mary Gratiana Mcparland

Bachelors’ Theses

There is always occasion for stressing the necessity of more physical exercise and recreation, especially of the kind that makes for developing body and mind alike. In these pages the compiler endeavors to show that ’’the old order changeth,” because life continually grows more complex, and an ever-increasing number of people seek the cities in order to make their homes there. Methods must change with changing times, and pro¬ vision must be made for the healthful recreation of the masses.

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden Jun 1932

Pre-Primer Reading, Meta Terlinden

Bachelors’ Theses

I shall attempt to show, in this thesis, the importance and· feasibility of pre-primer reading as an adequate foundation for primer reading. While pre-primer reading has taken an important place in the curriculum during recent years, there has been an ever-increasing interest taken as to its value, especially to children of low intelligence and to foreign children. I have obtained my references, to a large extent from William S. Gray and Laura Zirbes in their article on Primary Reading which appears in the Class Room Teacher Volume II, and also from articles on reading which are given in The Twenty-Fourth …

Line Play, William J. Wamtulonis Jun 1932

Line Play, William J. Wamtulonis

Bachelors’ Theses

Prior to 1896 the rules did not require more than one man on the line of scrimmage when the ball was put in play. Under these rules, the famous "flying wedge" was developed, in which ten of the eleven men were in motion when the ball was snapped. The rules were later changed, requiring five men to be on the line of scrimmage when the ball was put in play. This rule, together with its companion rule that "no player shall take more than a single step before the ball is put in play, save the one man who may …

The Exceptionally Bright Child, And Provisions Made For Him In The Classroom, Ella T. Poppe Jun 1932

The Exceptionally Bright Child, And Provisions Made For Him In The Classroom, Ella T. Poppe

Bachelors’ Theses

Leadership and efficiency will always be determined by the sane, the apt, the well-balanced. If this be true then the gifted ones should be so trained and given opportunity commensurate with their natural aptitudes and thus be made levers by which the whole plane of existence may be lifted to higher levels of intelligence, conduct and happiness.

The apt, the .bright, the gifted pupil is not only entitled to our consideration as his right, but because of the necessity for his leadership in the progressive movements of our civilization. The public schools are criticized for not making provisions for the …

The Assembly With Particular Reference To Grades Kindergarten To Sixth A, Ethel Jane Bennett Jun 1932

The Assembly With Particular Reference To Grades Kindergarten To Sixth A, Ethel Jane Bennett

Bachelors’ Theses

In these days of the changing curriculum with emphasis laid on character training, with the ultimate outcome in view rather than information gained or skills acquired, and with respect for personality an aim of the school, we find the assembly one of the chief factors in the school for obtaining these goals.

Line Play In Football, Francis J. Linscott Jun 1932

Line Play In Football, Francis J. Linscott

Bachelors’ Theses

Line play in football has gradually evolved from a massed attack, as prevalent in the early eighties, to an open game that is in vogue today. Participants in the early days of football called this a "block game." The team in possession of the ball would not make any attempt to advance it if they were playing a superior team. This evil became so great, however, that a rule was enacted, whereby the team in possession of the ball must advance five yards in three scrimmages or suffer a penalty of ten yards. This was changed later on, and a …

A Comparison In The Efficiency Of The Teaching Of Arithmetic In Grades Four To Eight, Inclusive, In The Standard And Non-Standard, One-Room Rural Schools Of Western Kansas, Roy Ernest Mohr

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Considerable discussion regarding the effectiveness of the teaching in the one-room rural school versus the standard school has been going on for some time, and it is hoped that the results of this study will throw some light on this subject which appears to be more or less perplexing at the present time. Education has become a science and its accomplishments can be quite definitely measured by the use of standardized tests. Before their time, the task of comparing schools in educational achievement was practically impossible; with age-grade and achievement norms scientifically determined, it became a simple matter to make …
