Silent Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Helen Selle Mar 1933

Silent Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Helen Selle

Bachelors’ Theses

There is a very close relationship between reading and the other school subjects. It is most closely related to the children's daily experiences, and should be taught in connection with them. It is essential in every content subject, as a means of getting information and pleasure.

The Health Of The School Child With Special Reference To Heart Cases, Annette G. West Mar 1933

The Health Of The School Child With Special Reference To Heart Cases, Annette G. West

Bachelors’ Theses

The first of the generally accepted objectives of education is health. The importance to the community of the health of its children can hardly be over-emphasized when it is fully realized that the children of to-day are the bread winners and the parents of to-morrow. The health of our children is the foundation upon which the welfare of the community depends. To conserve the health of the child is as much a function of the state as it is to conserve the natural resources. To investigate the evils that exist and to remedy all that may be remedied without transgressing …

Play And Recreation For The Handicapped Child, The Crippled Child, The Blind Child, The Mentally Deficient Child, Mildred Bistorius Mallory Feb 1933

Play And Recreation For The Handicapped Child, The Crippled Child, The Blind Child, The Mentally Deficient Child, Mildred Bistorius Mallory

Bachelors’ Theses

To the child play is life itself, serious all-absorbing. By play he lives and grows. Through play he develops his own personality and aptitude to get along well in society. Most of us do not take children’s play seriously enough. We are apt to think of play as wasting time and forgetting the duties of life. Probably this is the result of our Puritan traditions. Probably it is our sense of the responsibilities of life. Yet whatever it might be, we still accept with hesitation the fact so seriously emphasized by our scientific teachers of childhood, that play for the …

Education Of Crippled Children, Alice Mcquillan Feb 1933

Education Of Crippled Children, Alice Mcquillan

Bachelors’ Theses

In the last century education has become America's largest single business. Only within the last two decades has society*s obligations to under-privileged groups of children been recognized. This is especially true of those termed cripples. Today, as never before everyone recognizes the man-made dangers for children which result from traffic conditions, and also the cripples made so from disease. Even the average business man demands that these handicapped children be given a chance to develop their mental and if possible their physical facilities.

In the following chapters I wish to make a plea for the physically handicapped children.

Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Lillian L. Kyro Feb 1933

Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Lillian L. Kyro

Bachelors’ Theses

The past few years have brought many vital changes in the teaching of reading in the intermediate grades.

Formerly the objectives in reading for the intermediate grades were not much different from those of the primary grades. According to the traditional point of view, the methods which proved successful in the primary grades ought to be continued in the intermediate grades. To the teacher who holds this point oi view the later grades present no new problems for solution; the problems of the earlier grades still remain except that they present themselves now in an enlarged and intensified form.
