The Teaching Of Oral Language In Grades I To Viii, Elizabeth M. Weisend Jun 1933

The Teaching Of Oral Language In Grades I To Viii, Elizabeth M. Weisend

Bachelors’ Theses

The work of promoting good speaking and of obtaining accuracy in the expression of thought is one of the most important aims to be accomplished in teaching. The ability of the child to use accurately his mother-tongue in speaking is of great social and cultural value. It helps him to adapt himself socially to his environment and to think and express himself clearly. It gives him confidence in himself and thereby, ease in appearing before an audience, through his fluency in conversation gained by an ever-increasing vocabulary and a knowledge and use of correct English.

The New School In The Upper Grades, Selma F. Tonn Jun 1933

The New School In The Upper Grades, Selma F. Tonn

Bachelors’ Theses

The chief equipment a good teacher needs is a sympathetic understanding of child nature and child interests, and common sense or tact in the choice and use of methods of teaching suited to them. Anyone who has often seen the happy eager faces of all the children in a class of thirty-five or more can speak with authority. To discover the particular interests of each child; to choose those which have broad, various, and valuable educational opportunities, which can serve as ’’leads” to further interests and wider experience; to give children experience in living as it is natural to them …

Individuality And Provisions Made For It In The Primary Grades, Justine Kupecky Jun 1933

Individuality And Provisions Made For It In The Primary Grades, Justine Kupecky

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer always has felt that the school can never rise to its best until it provides for the fullest possible development of each individual child. A subject has been selected so that a clearer understanding of the changes going on toward the fulfillment of this ideal may be had.

An attempt to defend individuality has been made and by giving many aims of modern education, it has been shown that individuality is the goal of all education. Facts have been gathered to show why modern education is not reaching its goal.

What has actually been done for the individuality …

Ice Hockey, Arthur Peterson Jun 1933

Ice Hockey, Arthur Peterson

Bachelors’ Theses

Because of the drastic rule changes in ice hockey during the last few years all established systems of offense and defense must be radically changed or abolished. Besides adding more speed and scoring to the fame the rule changes have brought about a standardization of the game, causing the amateur and professional interpretation of rules to mean about the same. The usual official rules of any game are far from a description of the game, and the most descriptive literature on the subject is lacking in the definiteness of the rules. The present thesis aims to combine these two elements, …

According to the United States Bureau of Education at Washington, D. c., only six of the forty-eight states have prepared special courses of study in this field. In this study a comparative analysis is made of these courses of study as to character traits and objectives, methods of procedure in developing the …

Play And Its Relation To Education, Grace Lewandowski May 1933

Play And Its Relation To Education, Grace Lewandowski

Bachelors’ Theses

The earliest action that has been suggested as the beginning of the play movement in the United States is the provision or the New England town commons which dates from the early part of the Seventeenth Century, the Boston Commons having been established in 1634. Although there is abundant evidence that these commons have been used for play by each succeeding generation of boys since colonial times, these cannot be termed playgrounds, since the spaces were originally provided for pasturage and their utilization for municipal recreation came later.

The Summer Playground Of Milwaukee, Francis L. Mierzwa May 1933

The Summer Playground Of Milwaukee, Francis L. Mierzwa

Bachelors’ Theses

The main motive in the preparation of this thesis is to present to the public in general, the values of an organized system of recreation which the Milwaukee Public School Board presents through its Extension Department.

The playground is essentially a place for play. Play is recreation. Play gives health to the body and joy to the soul. Whoever has not known the pleasures of youth’s playground has missed half the sweetness of life.

That which brings together the group for restful, recreating, relaxing, vigorous, joyous, social activity is an uplifting force of incalculable value. That which makes us laugh …

Health Education In The Primary Grades, Aurelia S. Taterczynski May 1933

Health Education In The Primary Grades, Aurelia S. Taterczynski

Bachelors’ Theses

It seems that the schools of today have the real responsibility and task of teaching health education, so it has become a part of the educational program of almost every school system, as a result many schools are now equipped with medical and dental clinics. Undernourished children are aided in maintaining a balanced diet. School lunch-rooms furnish wholesome foods. Physical examinations and. home visits from school nurses constitute part of the program. Then, too, the teacher has become responsible, not only, for the training of the minds of children, but also for the health and welfare of the children in …

Radio In The Elementary School, Lenore Mary Stagg May 1933

Radio In The Elementary School, Lenore Mary Stagg

Bachelors’ Theses

Radio is a magic instrument of unity and power destined to link nations, to enlarge knowledge, to remove misunderstandings, and to promote truth. But it will not achieve these things unless we keep a more watchful eye on those who use it and those who control it. We should arouse in all people a greater sense of their responsibility for the proper use of this modern miracle. One of the distinguishing features of American democracy is the excellence of its common school system. Another name for common school is elementary school. Children who are engaged in the Kindergarten and the …

The History, Development, And Technique Of Soccer Football, Stanley R. Kezele May 1933

The History, Development, And Technique Of Soccer Football, Stanley R. Kezele

Bachelors’ Theses

Soccer football, in comparison with other great sport activities in the United States, has not been publicized to any representative extent either in the press or through literary discussions. As a student of the game I have been unable to discover any available authoritative work that embodies presentation of all its important points in necessary detail.

From a number of pamphlets, booklets, and articles, an attempt has been made to organize the diversified knowledge that seems of most value, together with additions of my own. Several moot questions, especially in the technique, have been studied carefully, and those standpoints considered …

The "New Deal" In Physical Education, William J. Luoma May 1933

The "New Deal" In Physical Education, William J. Luoma

Bachelors’ Theses

It would have been an interesting study to investigate the history of physical training, and to trace the different opinions, events, and epochs which have shaped and characterized the development of this important phase of education. The development of these different exercises and the influence they would have upon the development of the people would also have been an interesting study.

The Period Of Rapid Progress In Fundamental Reading Attitudes, Habits, And Skills: Second Year, Arabelle T. Weich May 1933

The Period Of Rapid Progress In Fundamental Reading Attitudes, Habits, And Skills: Second Year, Arabelle T. Weich

Bachelors’ Theses

"The justification of any subject in the curriculum is that it enables pupils to engage effectively in desirable life activities."

If the training accomplishes this and so makes better citizens, then its inclusion is justified. Instruction in reading should take into account the reading experiences of children and adults both in school and social life. We must therefore first consider the kind of reading adults do. That will be the kind children will have to learn to do better. A great change has occurred in the educational field in the last years. The course of study has been greatly enriched. …

History And Objectives Of The Milwaukee Municipal Amateur Athletic Association: Conducted By The Milwaukee Public Schools Extension Department, Ralph J. Bureta

Bachelors’ Theses

The .time has come to instill in the minds of those who are closely connected with recreational work that recreation is education and that participation in athletics is a mighty factory in the formation of character. In building up the bodies and minds of our people, and imparting in them the principle of good sportsmanship, athletic directors of municipal organizations are laying the foundation of good citizenship.

With this conviction in mind the author has considered athletics in their relationship to education. The view is expressed here that man is prepared by nature to engage in competitive activities of athletic …

The Teaching Of Reading In The First Grade, Marguerite R. Olsen May 1933

The Teaching Of Reading In The First Grade, Marguerite R. Olsen

Bachelors’ Theses

Of the importance of being able to read well, and the position of reading in the curriculum, there is no doubt.

Because reading serves as a means to enlarge and enrich the child's and adult's experience, it is very necessary that it be taught with great skill especially in its initial stages.
