The Radio In Music Education, Adaline E. Wilk May 1931

The Radio In Music Education, Adaline E. Wilk

Bachelors’ Theses

Up to the present the music of the world, in its completences, has been the private preserve of a little band of people who happened to live in the places where it could be heard, and who happened to have money enough to pay to hear it. Henceforth, it belongs to everybody. This means an immense widening of public interest in music, and I believe, a great raise of public taste. In five years' time, in my expectation, the general musical public of Europe and America will be treble or quadruple its present size. And the next generation instead of …

Visual Instruction As An Aid In Teaching Geography In Grammar Grades, Laura M. Meyer May 1931

Visual Instruction As An Aid In Teaching Geography In Grammar Grades, Laura M. Meyer

Bachelors’ Theses

At the present time the endeavor of every progressive teacher is to plan school work so that pupils may master their tasks much as efficient people in the business world, master their work.

That the schools have a tendency to be too artificial is unquestionably true. There is a noticeable absence of real things. The large increase in enrollments in our schools, together with the decreased level of ability, the additional work, the demands of society upon the public schools, and the increased competition of present-day life have served to necessitate the use of more effective methods of teaching. The …

Contributions Of Reading To Some Of The Other Content Subjects Particularly In The Sixth And Seventh Grades, Marion E. Theisen

Bachelors’ Theses

My purpose in this thesis is to show the contributions of reading to some or the other content subjects, particularly in the sixth and seventh grades. To so do it, I have consulted the leading authorities on both reading and study in order to make a complete survey of the material written on these subjects. I have recorded the main ideas of these authorities, and in most cases giving their direct quotations. In order to present the subject, it was necessary to particularly understand the nature of study, the objectives of reading, the relationship between study and reading, and the …

Diagnostic And Remedial Measures In Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Elsie Dickerhoff Thompson May 1931

Diagnostic And Remedial Measures In Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Elsie Dickerhoff Thompson

Bachelors’ Theses

"The development of reading as a branch of study began with the Reformation. This widespread movement necessitated on the part of the common people a familiarity with the Bible, and as a result reading and writing were introduced into the elementary curriculum and training in them became general." The books used at this time contained only extracts from the Bible. They were religious in character. The German word for primer means "little Bible". This primer appeared in 1419. Schulte in 1532 published the A.B.C. books which he tried to make more interesting for children. Basedaw 1723-1790 aided by advocating the …

Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney May 1931

Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney

Bachelors’ Theses

Reading has always had a place of first importance in the elementary school curriculum. However radical changes have taken place in the teaching of reading during the last twenty years. A generation ago, emphasis was placed upon oral reading, but it is recognized today that silent reading needs more teaching emphasis than oral reading because it is recognized that silent reading is used far more in the daily life of the individual. The average person encounters numerous situations daily when he is called upon to get the thought from the printed page and apply it in his life. In comparison …

The Supervised Study Of History In The High School, Alfred J. Niesen

Bachelors’ Theses

During recent years more and more attention has been paid to the supervision of the study habits and activities of high school pupils. Serious students of education have not been carried away by enthusiasm for this innovation, but they have subjected this movement to the searching test of careful analysis and statistical evaluation. It is the aim of this paper to formulate a definition of supervised study, to describe and evaluate the different methods and techniques now being employed, to arrive at conclusions on the basis of statistics which are now available, and to show that in spite of present …

The Use Of Current Events In Schools, Alexander Lilly May 1931

The Use Of Current Events In Schools, Alexander Lilly

Bachelors’ Theses

Ab a comparatively recent addition to our public school curriculum, the function of current events is probably not as well known as that of the older studies in the curriculum. The author wishes to set forth, therefore, the importance of a knowledge of current events, the necessity of and various methods of teaching current events, and the use of current events as an aid to teaching other school subjects.

To this end he had delved into the many books and magazine articles on the subject and presents in this volume his findings, with the hope that they will be of …

The Teaching Of Art In The Elementary Grades, Josephine M. Mccrory Apr 1931

The Teaching Of Art In The Elementary Grades, Josephine M. Mccrory

Bachelors’ Theses

To those who have experienced beauty in its various phases, there is no doubt as to the worth of art education. Years ago, however, during the early years of our history, when men's thoughts were concerned chiefly about their economic ideas of living, little or no thought was given to art at all. As time progresses, leisure is added, little by little, to man's program of living. He, therefore, begins to turn his thoughts toward art.

Science In The High School Curriculum, C. L. Jackson

Science Bulletin

“What sciences should be offered in a consolidated high school?” “Our high school school enrollment is about three hundred. What sciences should we include in our course of study?”

For several reasons no dogmatic statement will be made in answer to such questions, but it is hoped that we may be able to offer some suggestions which may help the individual superintendent or principal in deciding the questions for himself.
