The Teaching Of Geography In The Seventh Grade, Clara Kann Jul 1931

The Teaching Of Geography In The Seventh Grade, Clara Kann

Bachelors’ Theses

Universal public education is the foundation upon which democracy is built. In an autocracy or in a society organized upon the basis of a. ruling class. education may be reserved for the few, but in a democracy the welfare of every member of the group depends upon the intelligence of each. Free schools for the education or all of the members of a democratic society are quite as fundamental to the continuance and development of democracy as is the idea or universal suffrage or of equality before the law.

The High School Can Guide The Adolescent Girl In Her Choice Of A Vocation, Amanda J. Barsness Jul 1931

The High School Can Guide The Adolescent Girl In Her Choice Of A Vocation, Amanda J. Barsness

Bachelors’ Theses

A half century ago, high school girl graduates were not numerous enough to constitute a major problem to the community. Besides, it was taken for granted that a girl's career was to be that of homemaking. Today the picture is different. There has been an increase of over 500% in the number of girls who graduate from high school and the American girl has developed interests in many fields. Women of to-day are called upon to help solve· political, social, economic and educational problems as never before. The tendency now is for a girl to choose a career outside the …

Torrid, Temperate And Frigid, Misleading Terms In Geography, Alison E. Aitchison May 1931

Torrid, Temperate And Frigid, Misleading Terms In Geography, Alison E. Aitchison

Science Bulletin

In the March, 1930, issue of the Science Bulletin there was published an article under the caption “Misleading Terms in Geography''. After a discussion of certain terms which had found their way into the science before the days of extended and careful exploration the authors presented an investigation which was being carried on and asked the help of Bulletin readers in furthering it. Since many of the readers of the Bulletin are new and many more have probably forgotten the article it might be well to re-state the problem.

Shortly before our class in 10th grade biology was formed, I started preparing a balanced aquarium for the laboratory. In it we have about a dozen small gold fish, several snails, two tad-poles, and a good growth of moss. This aquarium has provided us a great deal of pleasure, as well as many illustrations of life itself.

Much value is obtained from clippings and pictures brought by the pupils and explained by them to the other members of the class. The article is discussed and then put on the bulletin board for two weeks where all may read it. Five or ten minutes of each class period are given over to "News", whether it be of the type above mentioned, or some personal experience, discovery or question along the line of the unit being studied.

The Beehive As An Aid In Biology, Winfield Scott

Science Bulletin

The honey bee never fails to generate interest. She calls forth the instinct of curiosity in the daring and fear in the timid. She challenges the courageous only to teach him caution. She challenges the timid and develops confidence. To those who like to study instinct in relation to environment, she presents countless problems.

The Supervised Study Of History In The High School, Alfred J. Niesen May 1931

The Supervised Study Of History In The High School, Alfred J. Niesen

Bachelors’ Theses

During recent years more and more attention has been paid to the supervision of the study habits and activities of high school pupils. Serious students of education have not been carried away by enthusiasm for this innovation, but they have subjected this movement to the searching test of careful analysis and statistical evaluation. It is the aim of this paper to formulate a definition of supervised study, to describe and evaluate the different methods and techniques now being employed, to arrive at conclusions on the basis of statistics which are now available, and to show that in spite of present …

A Course Of Study In Handwriting, Magdalene Joan Guequierre May 1931

A Course Of Study In Handwriting, Magdalene Joan Guequierre

Bachelors’ Theses

The objective in which we as teachers should be interested is the acquisition by the children of a plain, useful and legible handwriting, gracefully executed. Like all subjects, handwriting demands a certain amount of Intensive, progressive training and repetition before it can become automatized. The time for automatization of writing is during the handwriting period.

The Use Of Marionettes As A Project In The Elementary Schools, Elizabeth M. Grady May 1931

The Use Of Marionettes As A Project In The Elementary Schools, Elizabeth M. Grady

Bachelors’ Theses

A few years ago we associated the marionette entirely with the Italian showman. Now a veritable renaissance of interest in marionettes seems to be sweeping over every country, our own included. Many artists were quick to see the educational as well as enjoyment possibilities in this fascinating form of drama. The result has been that in almost every city and town some sort of work with marionettes is being done in the public, private and parochial schools from the primary grades to high school.

The Education Of The Retarded Pupil, Rose M. Murphy May 1931

The Education Of The Retarded Pupil, Rose M. Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

The retarded pupil that will be considered is the normal child whose mental age and achievement score are below the standards accepted for a child of his chronological age. The school must provide for this type of child now, more than formerly, due to the increased period of attendance required, and changed economic conditions. Regarding this matter Ryan and Crecelius’ state the following:

"Until recently secondary education has concerned itself very little with ’the masses’. in this country the original purpose of the secondary school was to provide selected youths with the training prerequisite for theological study."
