Man, the thinking animal, is an observer of events in the universe. He has conceded the obvious truth of his uniqueness on this planet and his religions charge him with its stewardship. However, the very quality which distinguishes him from other life forms has also proven to be his greatest weakness. Perception is a personal experience; its very nature mandates that it be point-centered in the universe. That point is the individual. Collective man is guilty of assuming that the universe "happens" around him. He has not effectively perceived that he is a happening in the universe. He has compounded …

The role of a modern Anatomy department is threefold (Metcalf, 1970): 1. To teach anatomy and its sub-disciplines, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, microscopic anatomy and embryology, to people who wish to learn it. 2. To advance the science of anatomy-the structural basis of function. 3. To train graduate students for a future role as anatomy faculty.

Student Housing
Colby has been a coeducational college for 100 years, but in the 1960s men began to be housed in dormitories formerly considered to be on the "women's side" of the campus and likewise women were housed on the "men's side." The president and trustees have approved "dormitory autonomy." The college has not introduced coeducational dormitories. This article includes the board's statement on the subject.
Appointments
Next fall Colby will have two new deans; a fourth Charles A. Dana Professor and two Avalon Visiting Professors will join the faculty.

The 153rd Class Arrives
President Strider, in his traditional address to freshmen on their first day on campus, discussed what the college offers and what can be expected of students: intellectual challenge, social adaptability, a respect for Colby's heritage, and …
