Project ASSIST (Alternatives for Schools of the Seventies for Improvement of Science Teaching) is a concept for statewide improvement of science education in Iowa. Science is broadly conceived to include mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, and social sciences. Cooperation among the various agencies and persons involved with education is central to the Project ASSIST concept.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Ruckelshaus has announced that a prototype engine developed by EPA and the U.S. Army has met EPA's 1976 emission standards in initial tests. EPA, the Army, Ford Motor Co. and Texaco, Inc. have been working on the project for the past two years as part of President Nixon's program to develop a virtually pollution free automobile engine.

Guidelines For Development Of Outdoor Education Programs, Leland D. Chapman

This paper presents guidelines for development of an outdoor education program for schools in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This developmental study is an analysis of the information collected from nine districts in Oregon, Washington, and the Regional Office, U.S. Forest Service, Portland, Oregon. It is limited to evaluations of existing programs, interviews with resource personnel and library research. Recommendations of this study are those indicated by the districts consulted and the Washington and Oregon Departments of Public Instruction.

School districts throughout the State of Washington are providing an Outdoor Education Program for children. For over twenty years, teachers in Washington have educated children in Outdoor Education. In addition, training for teachers in Outdoor Education has been offered for most of this time. Teachers working in Outdoor Education hope that more curriculum changes can be made to help better prepare teachers for this type of Outdoor Education.
