The Museum Director's Chair: An Ethnography, Mark Richard Jenness

Dissertations

This study reports the findings of a longitudinal case study of the director of one community museum over an eight-month period utilizing ethnographic research methods. A significant gap exists in research-based museum literature about the administrative functions of museums. To help address this lack of information, this study was conducted to determine the role of the chief administrator of a community museum by describing the daily activities and behaviors of the director while interacting with the people, places, and things of the museum. Unique in American society, museums represent our "collective memory" by preserving, conserving, researching, and interpreting living and …

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students.

Succinctly, this study utilized quasi-experimental techniques to isolate the performance of adult students. female students, …

Instructional Development Of Community Improvement Programs, Constance P. Hargrave Jan 1989

Instructional Development Of Community Improvement Programs, Constance P. Hargrave

Graduate Research Papers

Across the nation there exists many housing communities that have poorly maintained, run down, and/or vandalized external properties. These communities, although strongly manipulated by the amount of public monies that circulate within them, may not solely be the direct result of such economic influences. But rather, these external living conditions may be the result of a lack of education, organization, and motivation on the part of the people of these communities. This lack of education, organization, and motivation may result in the neglect and poor maintenance of external properties and grounds in such areas as: condemned housing that may be …

Variables Affecting The Deaf Student's Achievement In Reading, Rebecca A. Budensiek Jan 1988

Variables Affecting The Deaf Student's Achievement In Reading, Rebecca A. Budensiek

Graduate Research Papers

Reading and writing skills are generally considered to be the primary educational needs of deaf children. Although the field of deaf education is fraught with controversy regarding the most desirable communication mode for the deaf (i.e., oral or sign language or a combination), on one thing the experts agree: The deaf need to learn to read and write the language of their peers with normal hearing. It may appear on the surface that reading and writing instruction would be obvious tools in helping these individuals develop language proficiency. However, years of experience have shown that typical deaf individuals do not …

A Follow Up Study On Persisters And Non-Persisters From Mirror Lake/Tomlinson Adult Center To Make Recommendations For Changes In The School Curriculum To Reduce Attrition, Herman Allen

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

For the past several years the high attrition rate at Mirror Lake Tomlinson Adult Center (MLT) has been of tremendous concern to the teaching staff and administrators. It is suspected Chat there are several major factors pertaining to curriculum that contribute to this dropout, problem. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to secure certain data relative to former MLT persisters and non-persisters, so that recommendations regarding curriculum and program changes could be made that might lead to a decrease in the attrition rate.

Persisters, in the attrition study, are those students who completed their program or graduated from MLT. …

Possible Reasons For The Growth Of Peace Studies In The 1980s, Joan Marie Phelan Haack

Graduate Research Papers

Peace movements in many different forms and degrees have been present throughout history. But advocacy of peace studies in educational institutions is quite a recent phenomenon. While a few groups have advocated peace studies since the 1950s, a preponderance of curricular materials and literature did not appear until the 1980s (Scott, 1984).

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle Oct 1984

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Nonverbal communication among deaf people is discussed in relation to American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and interactions between deaf and hearing people. The article distinguishes between nonverbal behavior and the visual linguistic features of ASL, noting that movements of the face, eyes, head, and body may function as part of the language rather than as merely expressive gestures. It reviews assumptions about deaf people’s receptive and expressive nonverbal abilities, including the idea that visual communication automatically produces greater skill in interpreting body language. The article describes characteristic behaviors related to proxemics, touch, attention-getting gestures, eye gaze, and paralanguage, with attention …

The Effects Of Pregnancy On Behavioral Interdependence In Premarital Relationships, Joan V. Wareham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to compare couples who experienced a pregnancy early in their courtship, late in their courtship, or not pregnant at all on their development of behavioral interdependence across three levels of involvement; regularly dating, a couple, and committed to marriage, and into marriage. Data were collected by means of a semi-structured interview schedule which permitted couples to retrospectively graph their courtship from the first time they met until marriage. Partners divided their courtship into the three levels of involvement and then completed questionnaires which ascertained the activities they performed and with whom they performed them …
