Language Learning Strategies Of Russian-Speaking Adult Esl Learners, Minerva E. Renee Kalenandi Nov 1994

Language Learning Strategies Of Russian-Speaking Adult Esl Learners, Minerva E. Renee Kalenandi

Dissertations and Theses

In the ESL classroom, there are often cultural differences between learners and teachers. Sometimes these differences can lead to misunderstandings or even conflict. One area where differences between cultures can be seen is language learning strategies and styles. This study explores the possibility that awareness of differences, explicit teaching, and negotiation may help to resolve differences.

This study looks at differences between Russian-speaking adult ESL learners and American ESL teachers, with respect to strategy use and preferences. Three aspects are investigated. The first is to see whether there are statistically significant differences between these groups of learners and teachers. The …

The Mediation Of U.S. American Culture In The Esl Classroom, Steven Fredolph Roberts May 1994

The Mediation Of U.S. American Culture In The Esl Classroom, Steven Fredolph Roberts

Dissertations and Theses

The concept of cultural mediation is one that all ESL teachers must deal with as an inherent part of their employment. Yet, relatively little of the current literature has examined how teachers actually perceive this aspect of their work once they have left the teacher preparation program behind. This question provided the main rationale for the present study. The current study, an adaptation of DeFoe (1986), examined the mediation of U.S. American culture in the ESL classroom by means of a written survey of 42 teachers from ten community colleges, both in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area and from around the …

VU Enrollment Downsizes As Quality Upgrades

Valparaiso University opened the 1993 autumn semester with a smaller enrollment and an ongoing increase in the quality of its students. According to the registrar, VU enrolled 2,734 undergraduates, 542 law students, and 217 graduate students, for a total of 3,493 students in the fall.

While the fall undergraduate enrollment of 2,734 students shows an enrollment lessening of nearly 600 students in the past five years, student quality has increased over the same period. "The average ACT and SAT scores of our new students this fall are the highest …

1993-94 Annual Report, TransForming Through Connections, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 1994

1993-94 Annual Report, TransForming Through Connections, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

It is our privilege to share with you the eighth annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The 1993-94 year was a turning point for IMSA and our annual report helps to tell the story of our continued transformation from that of "school" to that of "educational laboratory/resource for the state of Illinois."

During 1993-94, the board of trustees officially approved a new strategic plan and mission statement declaring a bold commitment to the transformation of mathematics and science teaching and learning through connections. To answer that call, the Academy radically redesigned its internal organizational structure and as …

Conceptualizations Of Nature And Scientific Literacy, Part I: Research Methodology, William W. Cobern, Adrienne T. Gibson

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

If we may paraphrase and adapt from feminist scholars, there are voices of people that need to be heard if scholars intend to have a valid understanding of people and their behavior. The feminist scholars were of course seeking ways of making women’s voices heard but the importance of their work exceeds gender issues. It is important for restoring the image of people as persons rather than as objects of research. As we have undertaken it, the foundational perspective of worldview research is that one must hear from students and science teachers about themselves. We thus suggest it is important …

Alternative Constructions Of Science And Science Education, William W. Cobern Jan 1994

Alternative Constructions Of Science And Science Education, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

I want to begin today with two short personal remarks. My field of research at home is the cultural study of science education. In other words, I am interested in what is commonly called the culture of science and how that becomes interpreted in science education by teacher and curriculum. I am interested in the variation of culture among American students, cultural variations grounded in family and community and brought to the classroom. I am interested in the cultural interactions that are precipitated by the meeting of cultures in the science classroom. In my current work I use worldview concepts …

Worldview Theory And Conceptual Change In Science Education, William W. Cobern Jan 1994

Worldview Theory And Conceptual Change In Science Education, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Once again science education finds itself in the midst of reform. Reform documents are too numerous to mention by name but they all share the same view that Americans know far too little science. Durant (1990) noted that even the well educated often know little science. Of course every reform document by its very nature offers a solution. Many in the science education research community "see conceptual change as the emerging focus of science teaching" (Wandersee, 1993, p. 319) and thus focus their research interests here as well. To borrow warfare metaphors, conceptual change activities are tactical devices used to …

Beyond Prevention Curricula: A Guide To Developing Alternative Activities Programs, U.S. Department Of Education

Curriculum

This guide is designed to help educators and youth workers better understand how programs of alternative activities can effectively be used to supplement school-based efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug use among youth, and to encourage schools to become more involved in program development and implementation. It seeks to clear up some of the confusion over what constitutes a program of alternative activities and what its goals should be, to improve understanding of the potential value of this approach, and to recommend promising strategies for improving the effectiveness of these activities in preventing and reducing use of alcohol and …

Challenging Values: Conflict, Contradiction, And Pedagogy, Jacqueline Mintz Jan 1994

Challenging Values: Conflict, Contradiction, And Pedagogy, Jacqueline Mintz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The current crises of economics, demographics, retention, and disgruntled faculty, along with the neglect of the national mission to educate our citizenry for a democratic society, offer an opportunity on the cusp of the millennium to reflect about our values and the values of traditional American education. The literature of travel and cultural studies provides new lenses to help us and our institutions expose deeply held beliefs, assumptions, and the actions that have been taken in their names. Uncovering these beliefs can enable us as educators to reconstruct a common mission through developing a dynamic pedagogy for today 's students, …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This editorial is a model of the kind of collaborative process shared by Chuck, Elizabeth and myself throughout the growth of JSTAE 14. In this instance, given a suggested structure, Chuck wrote his portion of the editorial focusing on issues arising from the two articles where he lead the editorial team. He then sent his work to Elizabeth who wrote her editorial with reference to the articles where she took the lead, but also in response to Chuck's writing. As the third in line I have the opportunity to comment on the articles for which I had final responsibility as …

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey Jan 1994

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Although the field of art education has, in recent years, acknowledged the prevalence of non-formal educational sites, our literature is divided on whether this trend poses an opportunity for cooperation and strength or a threat to the status of art as a school subject. This paper consults the literature of critical theory within the domains of art, education, and leisure studies in order to examine the relationship between formal and non-formal art education. First, it considers ways in which tradition conceptualizations of art, education, leisure, and work foster an acceptance of art as experience and knowledge to be gained outside …

Promoting Collaborative Learning In The Early Childhood Classroom: Reggio Emilia, Italy, And Amherst, Massachusetts., Carolyn P. Edwards, Lella Gandini, John Nimmo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter describes a study that was conducted in Reggio Emilia (Emilia Romagna, northern Italy), Pistoia (Tuscany, Italy) and Amherst (Massachusetts, USA) as part of a three study project investigating how teachers promote collaboration and community in their classrooms. The methodology involved a combination of teacher interviews with an adaptation of the “multivocal video-ethnography developed by Tobin, Wu, and Davidson (1989) for Preschool in Three Cultures. This paper describes the findings from the Collaboration Interviews with teachers in Reggio Emilia and Amherst, showing intersections and differences in their concepts of young children’s capacities for cooperation and teachers’ roles in …
