A Qualitative Analysis Of Augustine’S Philosophy Of Education, Erik D. Thomas

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

A philosophy of education consists of varying values and beliefs that coalesce to form a coherent and structured approach to curriculum and instruction. Today, a diverse number of philosophies exist, each with its own set of standards, priorities, and points of emphasis like intellectual and vocational development. However, philosophies emphasizing moral development as an integral feature of both intellectual and vocational development are not as popular. Although some forms of moral education exist, disagreements over its value, purpose, and implementation remain prevalent. The following qualitative study examined the works of Augustine of Hippo, a proponent of moral education, to identify …

Encountering Education: Elements For A Marxist Pedagogy, Derek R. Ford Apr 2022

Encountering Education: Elements For A Marxist Pedagogy, Derek R. Ford

Education Studies Faculty publications

In Encountering Education, organizer and political and educational theorist Derek R. Ford develops new marxist pedagogical elements to advance the class struggle. Ford argues that the entire marxist project of establishing the dictatorship of the proletariat and creating a classless society entails an educational praxis that builds up disinterpellative encounters. Through an inventive reading of Marx, Althusser, Glissant, and others, they advance two dialectical pedagogical processes of inquiry and presentation, developing both--and the political relations between the two--through a range of theorists and situations. Encountering Education both illuminates the historical, political, spatial, technological, and sonic conditions of our struggle …

Maintaining And Retaining The Home Language While Learning English, Panhia Vang

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The Hmong are an Asian ethnic group that has been living in the United States for over 50 years now. Given the history of the Hmong, many Hmong parents have had no formal education or the highest education attainment they have is a high school diploma. Having little to no formal education, many parents do not know how to navigate the American school system to support their children with their academics. With the influence of American media and the school system, many Hmong American students are fluent in English, however, they are losing their cultural identity and home language. Despite …

How Do Schools Assess And Deliver Effective Professional Development To Mainstream Teachers With A Focus On Supporting Multilingual Learners?, Michelle Tornga

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

A significant educational concern in the state of Minnesota is that there is a substantial achievement gap between native English speakers and Multilingual Learners (MLLs). Despite implementation of federal (ESSA) and state legislation (LEAPS Act) designed to address this issue, an achievement gap still persists and Minnesota educators continue to struggle to support MLLs academically. This capstone project uses a synthesis from a literature review and the creation of a website, survey and pre-selected curated professional development resources in order to answer the question: How Do Schools Assess and Deliver Effective Professional Development to Mainstream Teachers With a Focus on …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has shown that play-based learning is beneficial for student growth and development in academic, social, and emotional skills. The professional development course designed for this project focuses on implementing a play-based learning pedagogical approach in first grade classrooms, in order to strengthen student social and emotional skills and increase academic knowledge. Play-based learning has been widely used and studied in preschool and kindergarten classrooms, but research on play and implementation at the first grade level is limited. The project involved creating professional development sessions that engaged teachers in play while learning best practices for creating change in their classrooms. …

Incorporating Interactive Outdoor Learning Into Everyday Curricula, Haley Doty Apr 2022

Incorporating Interactive Outdoor Learning Into Everyday Curricula, Haley Doty

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

As the state of our environment continues to worsen, it is important now more than ever that students become environmentally literate. Defined as an individual’s knowledge, attitude towards, and engagement with the environment, environmental literacy works to decrease environmental issues (Artun & Özsevgec, 2018). Although high school environmental science courses act as an introduction to environmental issues, they often lack experiences within the environment itself. Seeking to answer the research question: how can educational materials be used to integrate interactive, outdoor experiences into everyday classroom curricula, a unit of curriculum was developed for high school students enrolled in environmental science. …

How Can Teachers Utilize A Curriculum To Expand Students’ Knowledge Of Waste Management And Change Their Waste Reduction Behaviors?, Alexis Craig Apr 2022

How Can Teachers Utilize A Curriculum To Expand Students’ Knowledge Of Waste Management And Change Their Waste Reduction Behaviors?, Alexis Craig

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has shown that environmental education is an important tool to develop students’ knowledge of the environment and foster more environmentally friendly behaviors (Braun et. al., 2018). Lack of education in waste management and waste reduction fields has led to confusion on where waste goes, what can be recycled, and how students’ can change their behaviors to reduce their waste footprint. This paper investigates waste management in the United States and North Dakota, and how it can be implemented into an environmental education curriculum. The curriculum designed for this project uses this information and these environmental education and behavior change …

Death Education In Environmental Education: Making Meaning From Children's Eco-Grief, Gabrielle Loisel

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Eco-grief, the feeling of sadness, loss, or bereavement caused by environmental degradation and destruction, is an increasingly widespread phenomenon as ecological issues such as climate change are widely acknowledged. Children, with their limited agency, are vulnerable to feelings of helplessness and may develop maladaptive coping mechanisms, while educators often struggle to discuss environmental topics that prompt negative emotions. Drawing on best practices from the field of death education, this project examines ways of making meaning and outlines a new set of best practices for environmental educators to assuage students' eco-grief as well as their own, answering the question of: How …

Utilizing Experiential Education In Nature-Based Settings To Impact Pro-Environmental Behaviors, Delaney Babich

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Spending time in nature can have many effects on a person. I wanted to find out if one of these effects was a change in behavior regarding sustainable actions and mindsets. The research question posed for this project is: How does experiential education in a nature based setting impact pro-environmental behaviors? After researching many different forms of outdoor education and frameworks widely used in education, I decided my project would consist of an interactive activity booklet meant to be taken to a park or natural space along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities, or the surrounding areas. I wanted …

Increasing Ocean Environment Awareness In Land-Locked Middle School Students, Krista Espelien

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Abstract The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has defined ocean literacy as an “understanding of the ocean’s influence on you — and your influence on the ocean” (NOAA, 2013). Students are future decision-makers and engaging them in ocean literacy is vital as they will continue to be confronted with climate change throughout their lives. This capstone project addresses the question: How can experiential education on the topic of coral reef restoration increase the investment of land-locked, middle school students in marine conservation? This document identifies how ocean literacy and marine science topics are poorly represented in school curricula despite …

The purpose of this action research project was to determine the relationship between a three-year-old preschooler’s physical activity engagement and their ability to navigate risks and challenges in the natural playscape play area compared with the traditional playground. The decline of children’s physical activity over the past decade has influenced the research on the attributes of the outdoor space where children can become fully engaged as they navigate the risks and challenges encountered in their environment (Haga, 2021). A mixed-method study was used to determine significant differences in the children's physical activity engagement in a specific play area. Data was …
