Phonological Awareness Activities For Students With Reading Challenges, Kelsey Dewitt
Phonological Awareness Activities For Students With Reading Challenges, Kelsey Dewitt
Masters Projects
Phonological awareness has become more prevalent in schools over the years, but students with dyslexia and other forms of reading challenges tend to still struggle. One out of three fourth graders struggle with reading, and instruction is usually done orally and in a whole group setting. There is also a lack of visuals and manipulatives. Phonological awareness is the ability to work with letter sounds and manipulate them in words. A few examples include blending sounds together, taking one sound out to replace with another, and identifying the first sound in a word. These skills equip students for reading and …
External Laryngeal Oscillation And Aerodynamic Measures Of Voice Onset: A Translational Study, Erik Mcleod Christensen
External Laryngeal Oscillation And Aerodynamic Measures Of Voice Onset: A Translational Study, Erik Mcleod Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine external laryngeal oscillation and its potential effects on phonation threshold pressure (PTP; cm H2O) and phonation threshold flow (PTF; L/sec). Measures of PTP and PTF have inherent limitations due to the nonlinear nature of phonation, influencing their clinical and experimental utility. This is true particularly for tracking relatively small changes in voice function because variability in the measure itself can be larger than that resulting from voice change. Elevated PTP and PTF are associated with a variety of voice disorders and correlate with self-reported vocal effort and fatigue. Prior studies involving silicone …

Bittersweet Experiences For Brazilian Newcomers: Positive Interactions, Microaggressions, And Isolation In English-Only And Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Rose Renee Whitney
Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of the number of immigrant children in schools across the U.S., education research has directed its attention to understanding these newcomers' social experiences at school. Though Brazilian immigrant populations are growing, research on their unique social experiences remains limited. Grounded in critical sociocultural theory, this interpretive phenomenological study shares the social experiences of four Brazilian newcomers in elementary school. Participants were adolescents who had immigrated to the U.S. as children and attended English-only and/or Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs. As adolescents, participants were able to look back on their experiences as a newcomer in elementary school …

Exploring Bipoc Student Experiences And The Teacher’S Role In Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Elizabeth Cheesman
Exploring Bipoc Student Experiences And The Teacher’S Role In Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Elizabeth Cheesman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Though there have been efforts to address racism in schools, there is a lack of anti-racist pedagogy discussion and its role in changing education and therefore changing the world. Teachers often are able to grasp an understanding of racism and how that may impact their students through professional development. There is a significant lack of action in working to dismantle the racism seen in schools, however. Racism in the classroom may look like a colonized curriculum and implicit biases that influence the way students are perceived and treated in the school. Anti-racist pedagogy works to actively join the fight against …

Effective Reading Comprehension Strategies For Individuals With Learning Disabilities: A Research Synthesis, Gordon B. Worcester Ii
LC Journal of Special Education
This paper will explore and synthesize the body of current research on effective reading comprehension instruction and strategies. Beginning with a survey of several variables that affect working memory and executive processes, this paper will discuss how the mind’s ability to interpret text and derive meaning is a critical component for reading comprehension. The article will also explore how the elements of the working memory affect student with learning disabilities (LD). Furthermore, the working memory’s executive process is essential for the “simultaneous process of extracting and construction meaning” from text (Garcia-Madruga et al., 2013, p. 155). In addition, this paper …
Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii
Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii
LC Journal of Special Education
This paper will explore the adaptive components of ID as expressed by Greenspan (2003; 2006)—vulnerability/suggestibility, gullibility, naiveté, one’s desire to please and a cloak of competence. These and other adaptive characteristics provide strong evidence that individuals with ID are more vulnerable than typically developing persons; and these characteristics can be problematic for individuals with ID who may encounter entities from the criminal justice system. Furthermore, existing research indicates that there are a disproportionate number of individuals with ID represented within the criminal justice system. Between 4% and 10% of the prison population are individuals with ID (Petersilia, 2000). In addition, …
Impacts Of Granite Quarrying: The Case Of Subsistence Farmers In The São Pedro River Valley, Isabelle Poupard Santizo
Impacts Of Granite Quarrying: The Case Of Subsistence Farmers In The São Pedro River Valley, Isabelle Poupard Santizo
Theses & Dissertations
Granite quarrying constitutes an occupational hazard that compromises workers’ health, destroys the environment and negatively affects nearby communities (Azevedo et al., 2020; Ibrahim et al., 2019; Oktriani, Darmajanti, & Soesilo, 2017; Shaik et al., 2015). But the demand for granite and other decorative stones continues to grow (Gupta, 2018). Despite a decrease in imports/exports due to Covid-19 (Alves et al., 2020), today Brazil remains the number 1 granite exporter to the United States (US Geological Survey, 2021). In the last 30 years, the extraction of granite in Brazil has been continuous, particularly in the states of Espírito Santo (ES) and …

Even though children are natural scientists, many preschools isolate and limit science, which can cause children to miss out on valuable learning experiences and school readiness skills. Additionally, minimizing science at the preschool level fails to set a solid foundation for K-12 science education. In this single case study, we focused on the experiences and daily work of one constructivist-oriented preschool teacher who utilized science-based guided play and emergent curriculum as vehicles for important aspects of preschool learning. Findings demonstrate that with careful planning and intention, science can be utilized as a context for nonscience preschool learning objectives outlined by …

The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of proportional reasoning interventions for students with learning disabilities (LD) or mathematics difficulty (MD). We evaluated fifth to ninth grade interventions on proportional reasoning content, instructional features, and disability and difficulty identification. The nine studies met inclusion criteria yielded intervention effects ranging from g = −0.10 to 1.87 and from Tau-U = 0.88 to 1.00. Two of the nine studies were deemed high quality and very few studies included participants with LD. Although most studies identified the concepts addressed in the interventions, authors rarely provided in-depth descriptions of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a need for students to learn about public health issues, including the transmission of disease and methods for the prevention of epidemics. This study presents data from a project focused on developing computational microworlds to help middle school students learn about these topics. The microworld is designed to help students model and test their ideas about how a disease spreads through a population and how an epidemic can be prevented. I employed a lab-based case study approach to conduct one-on-one 1.5-hour interviews through Zoom with four middle-school students (ages 12-14). During the interview, the student …

JOHNSON CITY – Overseen by the Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University, researchers have studied the Gray Fossil Site for over 20 years, identifying many extinct animal and plant species. While large herbivores are well known from the site, large predators are relatively uncommon, so far including only alligators and scarce remains of at least one sabertooth cat.
Now, there’s a new predator on the scene.
A recent study published in the Journal of Paleontology describes a single right humerus (upper arm bone) of an animal named Borophagus, a member of an extinct …

This project investigated two online delivery methods to identify how to best support student learning. Students were grouped based on chemistry background and took part in one of two content lessons appropriate to their experience. These two content groups were then divided based on delivery method: asynchronous or synchronous. Participants completed a pre- and post-test around the lesson, with only content delivery method differing within groups; asynchronous students watched a video lecture, while synchronous students participated in a real-time lecture online. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. While student test scores improved pre-post, no statistical significance was seen in …

Applying The Dialogic Method In An Eighth Grade English Curriculum, Maggie Repko
Applying The Dialogic Method In An Eighth Grade English Curriculum, Maggie Repko
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In this thesis, I provide an analysis of Paulo Freire’s (1973) dialogic method for language education. I then synthesize his theories with the work of sociocultural and linguistic researchers who have determined the strongest activities to bring about student language development. Finally, I apply these theories to my appendices of created works that might be utilized in an eighth-grade creative writing course. This thesis demonstrates the similarities between Freire’s students and our students in the USA today and the ways that a critical dialogic pedagogy will meet their language learning needs while also inspiring their creative, critical conscientização. Paulo Freire …

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide in males (XY) and females (XX). Prior to menopause, females have a relative protection against serious cardiac pathologies compared to age-matched males. This phenomenon is widely attributed to the ovarian hormone estrogen. Unfortunately, hormone replacement therapy to maintain estrogen levels in postmenopausal females has overall adverse effects, and it is not recommended for long-term use or as a preventative measure for eCVDs. A major driver of CVDs, specifically heart failure, is cardiac fibrosis: the continued buildup of scar tissue that reduces the heart’s ability to pump. There are currently no …
