ACER India
Khan Academy introduced the Science Essentials Course to build a strong foundation in fundamental concepts among learners using deep conceptual videos. The course consists of learning videos and exercises - the videos help strengthen conceptual understanding for students, while the element of focused practice allows learners to retrieve concepts learnt, make mistakes, receive feedback, and in the process, master skills. The Australian Council for Educational Research (India) reviewed a sample of videos and exercises in physics, chemistry, and biology of the Science Essentials Course for students in grades 11 and 12.

Engaging with Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality, the authors (re)turn to its genesis in critical race theory (CRT) and specifically, its forms of structural intersectionality, political intersectionality, and representational intersectionality. Discussing each form in relation to contemporary issues in sport that Black women and women of Color navigate, they argue that Crenshaw’s intersectionality provides additional compelling layers of engagement with existing intersectional scholarship and scholarship about activism in sport, invites structural and discursive change through intersectional policies and practice, and promotes coalition building toward intersectional racial justice in sport.

Creative Placemaking And Empowered Participatory Governance, Amber Wichowsky, Jennifer Gaul-Stout, Jill Mcnew-Birren
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Creative placemaking has become a popular strategy to revitalize distressed neighborhoods. Who is empowered to participate in these projects and in what capacity? Do such efforts reduce or reinforce existing race-class inequities in community development? Drawing on three years of participant observations, interviews with stakeholders, and analyses of project reports, we use Archon Fung's “Democracy Cube” framework to evaluate a creative placemaking initiative in one of the most segregated cities in the United States. We find that over the course of the project, participation patterns shifted from highly diffuse across many individuals with varied roles to highly concentrated, such that …
Off The Rails: Cinematic Trains As Technological Controls Of The Natural World, Trinity Thompson
Off The Rails: Cinematic Trains As Technological Controls Of The Natural World, Trinity Thompson
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Short train rail lines across the United States are seeing increased national funding to reduce toxic chemical spills caused by train derailments, the most notable of which happened in February 2023 in East Palestine, Ohio. A year prior, the film White Noise (2022) featured a similar toxic train derailment incident, taking place, too, in Eastern Ohio, and featuring actors from the town of East Palestine. In considering other films featuring trains, I identified a pattern of environmental conflict, leading me to question the relationship between trains and the natural environment as portrayed in popular cinema. To conduct my research, I …

"She Didn't Know How To Work With Black Kids" Exploring How Adolescent Black Girls In Private, Predominantly White Institutions Perceive Their White Teachers' Ability To Affirm And Uplift Their Intersectional Identities, Florence Marie Prophete-Barbour
Theses & Dissertations
Black girls in predominantly White educational institutions (PWIs) are often viewed as less than or categorized as aggressive by their White teachers and peers, and such negative attitudes can lead to sub-par academic outcomes and low self-esteem. My study endeavored to understand the lived experiences of 10 Black adolescent girls ages 13-19 who have attended private PWIs in Nassau County, NY. Using a narrative inquiry approach, I conducted semi-structured interviews, educational mapping exercises, and focus groups to collect data on the girls' academic journey. The findings revealed that Black girls in PWI believe that school culture and structures matter, and …

Students' Attitudes Towards Animals Influences Youth Development Constructs Based On Interactions With Different Animal Species Prior To College, Allison K. Pachunka
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Human-animal interactions (HAI) are commonplace in society and play a consequential role in a variety of situations such as companion animal ownership, agriculture, or youth programs such as 4-H or FFA. Interacting with animals has been shown to provide developmental benefits to children. Positive youth development (PYD), measured by the Five Cs Model, is a framework that focuses on fostering youth’s potential through positive activities which has been studied specifically in 4-H. However, this framework has not been applied to other organizations such as the National FFA Organization (FFA) or to other young adults with less formal interactions with animals. …

Preparing Students For Careers In Agriculture: An Analysis Of Secondary And Postsecondary Approaches To Work-Based Learning In The United States And Rwanda, Matthew Sterling Kreifels
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation investigates work-based learning as a method to prepare students for agricultural careers through three interconnected studies. The first two studies investigate secondary education programs in the United States, while the third study explores postsecondary education in Rwanda. In Study 1, a philosophical research approach explores how the new Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) approach, SAE for All, aligns five Foundational SAE components with learning theories and supports Career and Technical Education priorities. Study 2 utilizes a transcendental phenomenological approach to examine teacher perceptions of SAE for All's effectiveness for student career development. Study 3, a case study, analyzes how …

Implementation Of Imwr (Inspiring-Modeling-Writing-Reporting) Scaffolding On Students Cognitive Learning Outcome In The Stoichiometry Topic, Indah Langitasari, Ratna Sari Siti Aisyah, Siti Elis Sya'adah
Jurnal Inovasi Pendidikan IPA
Stoichiometry is one of the essential chemistry topics that is an abstract concept, involves complex calculations, and is related to other chemical concepts. It can cause not a few students to have difficulty learning it. Scaffolding is needed in the learning process of stoichiometry concepts to help students understand concepts more easily and improve learning outcomes. This research aims to determine differences in students' cognitive learning outcomes on the stoichiometry topic after implementing the IMWR scaffolding model. This research used experimental research with the one-group pretest-postest design. Respondents were 32 high school students who were determined by purposive sampling. The …

2023-October-31-Sherrod Library Reaches Out In Many Ways To Support Students, Faculty.Pdf, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University
ETSU News
Academic libraries come with a built-in clientele. Students must write term papers, after all, and faculty use library resources in course preparation and research. But with the constantly changing technology and methodologies, it can be hard to keep up with the myriad ways to use the library.
Staff at the Sherrod Library of East Tennessee State University work hard to help students and faculty stay on top of it all. To do this, the library engages in two different kinds of outreach, according to David Atkins, dean of the Sherrod Library.
“First, we support students and faculty with their research …

Technology-Based Training With Social Work Students To Enhance Suicide Risk Assessment Skills During Covid-19, Warren L. Miller Jr, Aswood Bousseau, Jesse Capece, Jayashree Nimmagadda
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
The global COVID-19 pandemic has touched every aspect of human life. It has exacerbated how students continue to learn during a global health crisis. Specifically, training students to address mental health challenges (i.e., suicide assessments) during and post-COVID-19 is of the utmost importance. Previous research shows higher education institutions' responses to adjusting to previous world health crises, yet little is known about social work programs pivoting to technology-based training to educate BSW and MSW students to continue serving vulnerable populations in their field practicum during COVID-19. In this study, using the competencies attainment survey, the researchers at an east coast …
