A Case Study Examining Health And Fitness Effects Of Thru Hiking The Pacific Crest Trail, Holland Gaston, Dante Argento, Anna Grexton, Cory Greever
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), a long-distance hiking route spanning from the U.S.-Mexico Border to the U.S.-Canada border, is a compelling research topic for studying human performance. Thru hiking involves enduring high volumes of moderate-vigorous exercise, load carriage of survival gear, environmental conditions, hydration, nutrition, sleep, and psychological well-being, alongside addressing challenges like navigation, limited resupply, encounters with wild animals and injury/illness. PURPOSE: This case study investigated the impact of thru hiking the PCT on physical fitness and health in a cohort of three non-elite male hikers. METHODS: The participants had two visits to the lab, following an 8-12 hour …

The Structures And Functions Of Offices Of Academic Affairs: A Case Study, Ryan Thomas Landry
The Structures And Functions Of Offices Of Academic Affairs: A Case Study, Ryan Thomas Landry
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study sought to describe how offices of academic affairs (administrative offices supporting provosts) at public, research-intensive universities in the United States are structured and what kind of work these offices do. There is a dearth of scholarly literature on the topic, indicative of an overall lack of knowledge about these organizations. From a practical standpoint, I intended for this study to contribute to the body of knowledge of higher education administration with hopes that it provides helpful insights to administrators as they consider organizational design. Using the theoretical framework of modern organization theory, I employed an embedded case study …

Food For Thought: Rituals In Place Based Learning, Natalia Pilato
Food For Thought: Rituals In Place Based Learning, Natalia Pilato
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
In my mother’s kitchen lasting bonds among family, friends, and newcomers are created. Using that space as a point of departure, I explore the significance of pedagogical places outside of classrooms that serve as flavorful ingredients for performative and participatory learning. This article articulates ways in which rituals associated with Sicilian cultural traditions are interwoven and complicit in establishing dispositions for socially engaged learning and teaching in the arts, showing how an ethic of care can transcend generations. With a focus on place-based learning, making art and enjoying food are investigated to show how healthy productive relationships, appreciation for beauty, …
Art Nights: Reimagining Professional Development As A Ritual, Libba Willcox
Art Nights: Reimagining Professional Development As A Ritual, Libba Willcox
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
Art teachers’ need for connection, passion for artmaking, desire for mentoring, and quest for renewal led me to ask, what happens if we reimagine professional development as ritualized artistic practice? What would occur if our ritual was collaborative and intergenerational? How might ritualized professional development aid the quest for renewal? Pulling imagery and quotes from a larger qualitative and arts-based research study (Willcox, 2017), this visual essay shares what happened when an intergenerational group of art teachers met and engaged in artistic inquiry about their teaching practice. Specifically, it weaves together imagery and quotes to illustrate how our ritual, art …

A Growing Ritual Of Animal Rock Painting, Mary L. Stokrocki Professor Emerita
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
This visual essay explores a growing art form that blossomed into a community demand for memorial images. Such curiosities draw people’s attention to look closer, spot details, and become closer to nature. To understand the intense attraction, a neighborhood community formulated more demand, interest, and references to spirituality that reflect life’s rituals.

With an impressive body of work already under his belt, Andrew Lawson is well on his way toward achieving his dream of a career in film animation.
Lawson is a graduate student from Knoxville pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in digital media at East Tennessee State University.
His interest in digital media springs from his childhood, when he was captivated by Disney cartoons and Tim Burton’s claymation films, especially “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Because his family moved often, he needed something to entertain himself, and so he turned to art.
“I started out getting into illustrating and drawing,” he …

Affinity Based Writing Groups: Building Communities Across 9–12 Grade Levels, Melissa Pilakowski
Affinity Based Writing Groups: Building Communities Across 9–12 Grade Levels, Melissa Pilakowski
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Writing instruction in secondary classrooms has generally focused on cognitive approaches with feedback and assessment from a limited audience, often only the teacher. However, the burgeoning digital world has made writing an increasingly social activity where individuals can influence a wider audience and engage in dialogue with their readers faster and more efficiently than ever before. This action research aims to study the impacts of online affinity based writing groups that span the 9–12 grade levels, especially in the areas of effort, self-efficacy, and feedback. Data was collected through interviews with participating students and teachers, samples of writing and feedback, …
A Phenomenological Study Of Successful Superintendent Retention In A North-Central New Mexico School District, Adán G. Delgado
A Phenomenological Study Of Successful Superintendent Retention In A North-Central New Mexico School District, Adán G. Delgado
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Superintendent of Schools is uniquely critical in a school district due to its tremendous effect on the operational and cultural bearing of the organization (Myers, 2011). Superintendent turnover can hinder district reform and improvement (Grissom & Andersen, 2012; Marzano, 2006). The United States and New Mexico struggle with superintendent retention and northern New Mexico is especially plagued with short superintendent tenure (Grissom & Andersen, 2012; NMPED Stat Books, 2021; Sawchuck, 2022). In this study, I investigated the initial selection and subsequent interactions and relationships between school board members and superintendents. Using a phenomenological approach, I interviewed two superintendents and four …

Repeated, Short Cold-Water Immersions Are Sufficient To Habituate To The Cold, But Do Not Lead To Adaptations During Exercise In Normobaric Hypoxia, Geoffrey T. Dorsett, Trevor L. Gillum
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cold and hypoxia naturally exist together, yet it is unknown if habituation to the cold can lead to improved exercise in hypoxia. PURPOSE: To assess the effects of repeated cold-water immersions (CWI) on pulmonary, metabolic, and sympathoadrenal responses to graded exercise in hypoxia. METHODS: 16 (2 female) participants (age: 21.2 ± 1.3 years; body fat: 12.3 ± 7.7 %; body surface area 1.87 ± 0.16 m2, VO2peak: 48.7 ± 7.9 mL/kg/min) underwent 6 CWI in 12.0 ± 1.2° C. Each CWI was 5 minutes, twice daily, separated by ≥4 hours, for 3 consecutive days, …

The Impact Of International Technology Education Standards On The Development Of A National Curriculum: A Case Study In Korea, Euisuk Sung, Yuhuyn Choi, Ji Suk Kim, Eunsang Lee, Yunjin Lim
Publications and Research
South Korea has mandated technology education as a general education subject since 1954. However, recent educational trends, such as the emergence of computer education; artificial intelligence; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and K-12 engineering education call for considerable change in Korean technology education. The authors translated and published Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy (STEL) in Korean to introduce the new standards to Korean educators in response to these challenges. This case study will review the history of Korean technology education from its inception in the 1960s and discuss the potential impacts of STEL on the Korean technology education …

Increasingly researchers and practitioners have highlighted the importance of developing a sense of community in online courses and programs. However, many questions remain about the best ways to develop community in online courses. A recent literature review highlighted how influential Alfred P. Rovai’s research has been to researchers of connectedness and community in online higher education. However, some of this foundational research is over 20 years old. Given this, we conducted a review of Rovai’s research on community to take a deeper analysis of Rovai’s research and to identify themes across the studies, future areas of research, and implications for …
