Examining The Influence Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Job Satisfaction, And Professional Identity On The Turnover Intentions Of Traditionally Certified And Alternatively Certified School-Based Agricultural Education Teachers: A National Study, Matthew J. Wood
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Recruitment and retention of agriculture teachers has been an ongoing challenge within education, with schools struggling to attract and keep qualified teachers. Research has explored many factors—including job satisfaction, work-life balance, administrative support, and professional development opportunities—to uncover the complex roots of teacher turnover. Despite these efforts, the cycle of recruiting and sustaining passionate and competent agriculture teachers remains a significant hurdle. A clear and comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence teacher turnover intentions is needed. This research aimed to explore the factors that influence the turnover intentions of SBAE teachers by licensure type. The Four Capital Theory of …

An Examination Of Inclusion Of Secondary Students With Disabilities In One Local School District, Brandon Brown
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This survey was designed to examine the role of inclusion in a secondary school setting in one school district. The survey attempted to measure the attitudes, and opinions of general education school teachers, special education school teachers, administrators, and the parents of a student with a disability. The survey determined that most opinions agreed that students with disabilities deserved to be included in classes and extracurricular activities but what that would look like was different in all groups. Opinions even varied when looking at what the exact definition of inclusion was. Results from the survey showed opinions that teachers and …

Students' And Teachers' Perceptions Of Play On Students' Classroom Behavior, Melissa Bradt
Students' And Teachers' Perceptions Of Play On Students' Classroom Behavior, Melissa Bradt
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Play is an integral part of human nature. Research has demonstrated that play supports physical, socio-emotional, and cognitive development in children and even adults. However, according to the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play (2024), 40% of school districts in the U.S. have eliminated or reduced recess in order to promote academic excellence as measured by standardized tests. How does the reduction in play time influence students’ classroom behavior? An examination of this question has tremendous theoretical and societal impact as it informs the influence of the environment on human development. This fundamental question in human development has …

Animation mirrors society, reflecting its values, beliefs and challenges, becoming a tool to enable cultural improvement by recognising diversity and critiquing socio-political issues. Inspired by traditional Eastern European animation, renowned for its surrealism and socio-political narratives, this research aims to expand the medium’s potential. Directors like Jan Svankmajer and Jiri Trnka created masterpieces based on folklore, mythology and political commentary. This research aims to intertwine and shape animated works' content and context by honouring this tradition.
The research explores the multifaceted role of contemporary animation, which embeds Eastern European stylistic techniques to disrupt popular story structures and shape social discourse. …

Exploring The Dark And Gothic: An Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe And Nathaniel Hawthorne’S Gothic Elements In American Literature, Alejandra Serna
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the significant contributions of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne to the development of American Gothic literature. Poe’s stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” are renowned for their psychological elements and exploration of the human psyche, while Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark” questions the nature of evil as a universal human experience. By examining the ways in which these authors engage with themes of mental disorders, symbolism, and science versus nature, this thesis explores how such work by Poe and Hawthorne play in shaping the readers' understanding of the darker elements of American Gothic literature and its …

Context-Driven Creative Workshop: Celebrating Locality In Disaster-Affected Communities, Ruth Kartika Purnasasmita, Kristanti Dewi Paramita, Paramita Atmodiwirjo
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This paper explores the idea of context as the basis for developing creative workshops for children in disaster-stricken communities. We argue that creative learning should not be seen merely in terms of artistic expression and abstract thinking. Instead, it should become a platform for celebrating local contexts and cultures through the learning process. This study was based on reflecting on two creative workshop activities that were held in post-disaster schools in Cianjur, West Java. The school is part of the Sekolah Indonesia Cepat Tanggap (SICT) program—a fast-track school construction initiative for communities affected by disasters throughout Indonesia. The creative workshops …

In 2021, we faced the unexpected impacts of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, especially on the Navajo Nation. There were many things to realize, but one that hits hardest is the loss we suffered with many traditional practitioners passing from this illness. The purpose of this study was to examine linguistic and cultural contributions that Knowledge Keepers might consider making for the future of our Navajo Nation and Diné College. Drawing on my cultural teachings and knowledge, I conducted semi-structured interviews in Navajo and English with 10 participants, including leaders, alumni, staff, and traditional practitioners; I also utilized a circling back …
Effective Vocabulary Instructions In Kindergarten Through Third Grade, Allison Ericksen
Effective Vocabulary Instructions In Kindergarten Through Third Grade, Allison Ericksen
Masters Projects
This project proposal explains the lack of research and emphasis put on vocabulary instruction in kindergarten through third grade. There is a vocabulary gap between students who come from low SES and high SES that puts students at a disadvantage when it comes to reading, since 60% of comprehension is tied to vocabulary (Stahl and Nagy, 2005). However, the gap is often not addressed until later grades when it starts to be more necessary to comprehend what they read in order to learn. Teaching vocabulary in the younger grades will help prevent the gap from growing too large for those …

A Critical Discourse On Asian American Stereotypes And Pedagogical Strategies Against Anti-Asian Racism, Ryan Shin, Maria Lim, Oksun Lee, Ahran Koo, Kevin Hsieh, Min Gu, Jaehan Bae
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this article, we address the three derogatory stereotypes and tropes of anti-Asian racism: model minority, perpetual foreigner, and yellow peril. We problematize how each of the three stereotypes was formed and has been sustained, affecting our art classroom and professional practices. After that, we offer the novel and futuristic conception of Asian American inclusivity as a critical project in our society. Lastly, in challenging the three Asian stereotypes and embracing Asian American inclusivity, we offer S-R-C teaching strategies (Sense of Belonging, Resist, and Coalition Building) to confront anti-Asian racism and violence. The strategies are designed to help art educators …

New Ways Of Making In The Face Of Uncertainty. Approaching Difficult Conversations Through Media Arts, Veronica Soria-Martinez, Iga Puchalska
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper, the authors reflect on a learning experience in which we devised practices grounded in Culturally Responsive Teaching, Equity, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Digital Media Arts and how this experience would help students and members of the community (including us as educators) to develop critical knowledge and interconnectedness in the face of uncertainty. We drew on previous research and critical discussions on SEL to create an educational practice that promotes equity and confronts oppression by encouraging students to develop inquiry questions about race and to listen to different perspectives as they form their own answers. In doing …

Indigenous Curricula And Teachers’ Preparedness, Caitlin M. Benson
Indigenous Curricula And Teachers’ Preparedness, Caitlin M. Benson
Masters Projects
Indigenous curriculum in elementary school does not adequately describe the relationship between Indigenous people and the European colonizers. This inadequate representation leads to harm towards people of color and limits the understanding of U.S. history for all students. TribalCrit and other theories seek to offer ways to remediate this lack of Indigenous representation in U.S. culture and education. Using TribalCrit and Indigenous Studies Frameworks before teaching social studies curricula can help to prepare teachers to present the material to students in an equitable manner. The quick guides and resources located in the appendices of this project will give elementary educators …

Social Media Microinterventions: Testing Information Activism As A Media And Information Literacy Tool, Maia Klaassen, Maria Murumaa-Mengel, Marju Himma
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Several studies have shown the effect of information activism and microinterventions, such as I Am Here International, the Elves and #NAFO to combat information disorder and hate online. Nevertheless, microinterventions have yet to be conceptualised in promoting media and information literacy (MIL) and informational resilience. This study positions microinterventions as information activism tools and empirically tests microinterventions in the context of higher education. Using an action research approach at a university MIL training course, we aim to understand what types of information activism are used and how the collective interventions affected the participants' MIL-s. We construct a typology of information …

The Influence Of Misconceptions On Pedagogical Choices Of Secondary Science Teachers: An Embedded Case Study, Tracey Beyer
The Influence Of Misconceptions On Pedagogical Choices Of Secondary Science Teachers: An Embedded Case Study, Tracey Beyer
Dissertations
This case study, using phenomenography within science disciplines, examines how educators' experiences with misconceptions affect teaching methods in high school physics, chemistry, and biology. Based on constructivist and interpretive theories it highlights that personal experiences shape learning and involve continuously reconstructing knowledge. The shared misconceptions of 13 educators across science disciplines reveal how those experiences influenced both their content knowledge and instructional practices. The findings indicate that educators who openly acknowledge and learn from their past experiences with misconceptions are better equipped to recognize and address gaps in understanding, an asset to furthering student learning. This research highlights the importance …
Compelled To Care? Exploring College Instructors’ Conceptualizations And Expressions Of Care Toward Students, Krista Kimmel
Compelled To Care? Exploring College Instructors’ Conceptualizations And Expressions Of Care Toward Students, Krista Kimmel
Online Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation research explores how college instructors perceive and demonstrate care toward students. This research also seeks to consider how the Covid-19 pandemic influenced instructors’ caring behaviors. Although instructor care has been linked to several positive student outcomes, including persistence, little research has examined caring behaviors from the instructor’s perspective. In addition, how the pandemic’s aftermath continues to transform college teaching and learning is an area ripe for further scholarly investigation. Findings from semi-structured interviews and interpretive phenomenological analysis revealed that faculty conceptualize caring behaviors as a negotiated relationship between instructor and student. This negotiated relationship was characterized by responding …

Storywood: Collaborating With Opaque Unknowable Others Through Oil Painting, Tanya J. Behrisch
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This paper demonstrates the use of contemplation and arts-based research (ABR) to explore intersubjectivity between myself and other opaque beings. Through a walking meditation, I experience an affective encounter with a plywood board found lying on a beach. The board radiates agency and mysterious stories about its passage through the world. Drawing on philosopher Tim Lilburn’s concept of permeable attention and Bennett’s theory of vibrant matter, I discover the storied nature of the damaged board and resonances between its stories and my own. By practicing perceptual openness, I discern vitality shimmering beyond the visible surface of the board. During my …

Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma
Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article aims to decolonize queer epistemology in order to challenge the hegemony of white/eurocentric LGBTQ histories, cultures, and representations as the universal and normalized standard of queer and trans life and sociality. Toward this objective, it analyzes whitestream queer epistemology, and notes its limits that do not account for its inclusions and exclusions, especially in relation to race, geography, and methodological (homo)nationalism. It draws attention to the works of queer and trans theorists, researchers, and educators from the global majority, especially the growing scholarship on LGBTQ education outside of the United States, to point out a significant gap in …
