Reflections From A Summer Literacy Intervention: Unlocking A Love Of Literacy For Struggling Readers, Rory Cantwell Oct 2024

Reflections From A Summer Literacy Intervention: Unlocking A Love Of Literacy For Struggling Readers, Rory Cantwell

Honors Projects

Summer literacy interventions offer a solution to the devastating impacts that summer literacy loss can have on struggling readers and writers. However, these interventions should consider the impact of student attitudes towards literacy on their learning and strive to develop positive associations between literacy and enjoyment. Camp Curious, a summer literacy intervention developed as a collaboration between the Virginia Association of Teachers of English and Shrine Mont, a retreat and conference center, embodies this idea. The intervention, in the form of a week-long camp experience, strives to provide third through sixth graders with positive and varied experiences related to literacy. …

Honors Is More Than A Grade: Removing The Experiential Ceiling In Honors, Justin L. Rheubert, Marisa Prisco, Paige A. Grum, Abby L. Kalkstein

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The stress created by academic pressure may prevent honors students from exploring curricula beyond that required by their majors. Challenged with additional workload and extracurricular requirements, students in honors often confront added stress caused by a desire to perform favorably in all academic pursuits. This pressure may result in hesitancy to explore new ideas, nurture curiosity, or break free from the rigors of a defined program of study—the opposite of what honors pedagogy and practice purport. This essay presents the process of converting a weighted grading system to pass/fail in an effort to provide students with opportunities for academic exploration …

Face-To-Face: A Sociologist Looks At College Students' Mental Health, Maureen Kelleher

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

While both individual honors programs and their broader campus communities have implemented new initiatives and intervention strategies to address undergraduate mental health, significant needs remain unmet and concerns unaddressed about the long-term implications for students. This paper provides a framework for understanding the current (2023) environment on many campuses by presenting national legislation that shapes campus response, offering cases of specific institutional responses to crisis, and exploring the impact of face-to-face interaction between faculty and students in classrooms. Awareness of these three levels of response—national, campus, and classroom—equips and empowers the honors community to understand and effectively deal with myriad …

Unpacking English Language Teachers’ Perceptions And Practices Of Translanguaging: A Case Study Of Secondary Schools In China, Yuling Chen, Fan Fang, Weilei Zhang

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Translanguaging has gained prominence as a viable tactic to assist the language learning of L2 learners due to the increasing variety of classrooms globally. Translanguaging pedagogy has been recently studied in diverse contexts. However, most of the research on translanguaging, especially in the Chinese context, is focused on higher education. Limited attention has been paid to secondary school. Therefore, this qualitative case study aims to fill this gap by investigating how language educators employ translanguaging in their English teaching in secondary schools. Data was collected from 4 Chinese EFL teachers across 2 secondary schools through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews, …

Reflections On Influential Stem Experiences For Childhood Science Identity Development From East And Southeast Asian(Americans), Ellie Hechter Oct 2024

Reflections On Influential Stem Experiences For Childhood Science Identity Development From East And Southeast Asian(Americans), Ellie Hechter

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Asian(Americans) are considered overrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but disaggregating demographic data shows that Southeast Asian(Americans) are underrepresented, underrecognized, and actively marginalized in the STEM workforce and degrees. The falsely monolithic view of Asian(Americans) has resulted in Southeast Asian(Americans) being unaccounted for in equity and inclusion initiatives. To better understand how to support Southeast Asian(Americans) in STEM, this study focused on childhood science identity development. A weak science identity is a significant barrier that can affect a student’s engagement and persistence in STEM and can be affected by numerous psychological, institutional, social, and cultural experiences. This study …

Reimagining Science As A Natural Tool For Connection: A Restorative Approach, Zachary C. Schafer, Lawrence C. Scharmann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This paper explores a restorative-type intervention with a high school student who is suspended from school for repeated threats to other students. Throughout the paper, we explore the use of restorative practices in the context of science teaching. Science in process and content is used in tandem with various restorative practices to provide the student a lens through which to better understand what led to her suspension, learn science content, and find perspective change in the process as it pertains to her developing sense of self. The methods and tools are then transformed into practical use through a modified version …

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt Oct 2024

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt

Theses

This project aims to develop an inclusive art history curriculum as a high school level course, addressing the traditional Western-centric focus that has been marginalized non-Western contributions. By pairing Western and non-Western artworks within a chronological framework, students can compare artistic expressions across cultures, emphasizing parallel histories rather than a single Eurocentric narrative. The curriculum employs diverse interpretive methodologies to foster critical thinking and challenge conventional narrative. Designed for a 20-week semester, it focuses on a smaller number of key artworks per unit to encourage meaningful engagement and projects. While still rooted in Western art, the course connects global artistic …

The Intersection Of Place And Game Design: The Case Of Two Classic African Board Games, Rebecca Y. Bayeck, Joseph M. Bayeck

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The concept of game design is often associated with a computational creative task or a creation with technology. Automatically linking game design to computational activity or technology may have contributed to the scarce research on the interaction between place and game design. The focus on technology may have excluded indigenous games from game design conversation in the game design literature. This article explores design in the context of two classic African board games. We examine the influence of place on the design of these games. Building on game design and place literature, the article shows the situatedness of game design …

The project and paper address the research question of, what resources can educators provide to caregivers to help strengthen learning through movement in the home environment? Research has shown that students perform better academically when they are supported by both their educators and their caregivers, when they have ample opportunities to intentionally move their bodies both at home and at school, and when their educators and caregivers are working together as a team to support them as a person and as a learner. Ten resources have been put together to make up the contents of a movement backpack, which can …

The Explicit Teaching Of Social-Emotional Skills Through Storytelling, Karen Roussell Oct 2024

The Explicit Teaching Of Social-Emotional Skills Through Storytelling, Karen Roussell

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

State testing pressures and loss of academic time due to COVID (2019) have pushed academics forward while leaving behind Social Emotional Learning (SEL). With little time for SEL, teachers need to integrate it through other content areas. However, educators have voiced challenges when integrating SEL within content. Research has shown an increase in the implementation of SEL but also indicates that not all teachers are formally teaching it. Since not all teachers are teaching SEL, some students do not have access to the necessary resources to gain lifelong social-emotional skills. This creates an inequitable learning environment within the classroom. This …

Increasing Student Retention And Engagement Of Learned Concepts, While Fostering Connections To The Cultural And Ecological Significance Of The Galapagos Islands Through Pre-Travel Lessons And Reflection, Bernadette Heaney-Deuel

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Student travel has the potential to provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Travel combines authentic experiences and exposure to multiple perspectives in a way unlikely to happen in the classroom. Authentic experiences answer the age-old question, “Why do I have to learn this?” The reason for learning becomes tangible in the moment. Broadening our perspective increases empathy, reduces bias, and improves problem-solving skills. Travel provides the opportunity to experience many perspectives different from those experienced in our daily lives. The impact travel can have on a student can vary based on the experiences before, during, and after travel. Through the use of pre-travel …
