Democratic Practices As Part Of Mathematical Modeling In Schools, Lisa Steffensen, Inger Elin Lilland, Shengtian Zhou
Democracy & Education
We focus on how democratic practices occur during the modeling activity “The Candy Bag of Dreams.” With democratic practices, we refer to approaches supporting inclusivity and active participation aimed at empowering students. We investigated one group of preservice teachers implementing an optimizing modeling activity during practicum in two fifth-grade classes, where students modeled their dream candy bags. Students engaged in mathematical modeling where mathematics was embedded in their social context, and they negotiated meanings and developed perspectives. Through this, they experienced lived democracy by actively engaging in and through democratic practices.
We found democratic practices such as students inviting peers …

Preservice Teachers As Learners, Designers And Implementers Of Computational Thinking (Ldi-Ct), Line Saint-Hilaire, Daisuke Akiba
Publications and Research
Computational thinking (CT) has gained significant recognition in education in recent years. When considering young children learning CT concepts, it's essential to also assess teachers’ understanding of computational thinking. Therefore, educators in teacher preparation programs must equip candidates with these skills to meet the growing demand for developing students’ digital literacy. This project aimed to understand how to strategically incorporate CT instruction into a teacher education program in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department. It focuses on assessing preservice teachers' (PSTs) understanding of computational thinking and their ability to design CT-integrated science lesson plans based on their experiences with …

Assessing The Climate Readiness Of Physician Education Leaders In Graduate Medical Education, Deborah Simpson, Anne Getzin, Aaron A. Levy, Victoria Gillet
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Climate change affects patient health through an array of exposures, including increasing heatwaves, extreme weather events, poor air quality, and expanding vector-borne illnesses. Physicians are at the forefront of addressing the health consequences of these exposures with patients, and environmental sustainability has become a priority for health care organizations. Accordingly, climate change and health is becoming a critical area for graduate medical education (GME). As GME leaders design and drive education in residency and fellowship programs, understanding those leaders’ baseline knowledge on this topic and its alignment with their organizations’ priorities is an essential step in the development of climate …
Whole Child Development: Academic Knowledge Influence, Allison Thielbar
Whole Child Development: Academic Knowledge Influence, Allison Thielbar
Graduate Teacher Education
In the education systems, the emphasis on academic achievement often overshadows the development of young learners. This pressure was particularly evident in early childhood classrooms, where educators were to prioritize standardized academic outcomes over the broader needs of the whole child (Cade et al., 2022). This research paper explored the tension between academic pressure and development in early childhood education, examining how the intense
focus on academic knowledge could undermine efforts to support the social, emotional, and cognitive growth of students (Friedman et al., 2021). A review of existing literature and an analysis of educational practices showed that the emphasis …

Art And Climate : A Creative Awareness, Michel Abou Khalil
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
The growing engagement of artists with ecological challenges is a significant trend in the Anthropocene era. Most often, some of them feel driven by a sense of responsibility regarding the impact of industry and consumer society on the environment. Their commitment becomes a form of activism, mobilization or even a simple commercial niche to exploit. By observing this enthusiasm in the art world for environmental issues, we can ask ourselves the following questions: despite their sometimes lack of in-depth knowledge, where does the role of artists begin and end in this complex universe? Does their commitment have real power to …

Nature does things well, but sometimes it takes crooked paths... In psychoanalysis, the role of the psychoanalyst, as of any other therapist, is not only to set clinical goals, to understand the psychic work of the patient and to accompany him in his self-discovery. Above all, it is supposed to manage the internal conflicts of the suffering subject. To do this, he seeks to shed light on his unconscious journey and detect the vagaries of his psychic functioning. He try to act on his commitment, motivation and adherence to the values of the society in which he lives, without hindering …

« In 1978, William Rueckert, retired professor of English and American literature at the State University of New York at Geneseo, published an article entitled "Literature and Ecology. An Experiment in Ecocriticism" where the word ecocriticism was used for the first time. » (Posthumus, 2017, p. 161) This is how appeared a discipline which, over the decades, has gained in insight and relevance, and whose true theoretical foundations were finally laid by Professor Lawrence Buell, in his work The Environmental Imagination, published in 1995. Climate change is a global phenomenon due to global warming, characterized by a general increase in average temperatures. This change is linked to industrial activity, in particular to the greenhouse effect, which is why it is said to be of human origin. Alongside scientists, writers now include themes linked to global warming. New genres have appeared such as climate fiction. Thomas B. Reverdy, in his novel Climax describes the end of the world in the context of global warming. The action takes place in the north, towards the Arctic. The story involves various protagonists who remember Norse legends about the …

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya
Sustainable agriculture is a frequently weaponized phrase with a varying degree of intentions and applications world-wide. For Nepal, true sustainability lies within cultivating traditional indigenous agricultural practices in favor of imported western methods which are ill suited for the unique geography of Nepal and the longevity of the people and place they call home. Agroecology, or the focus on the importance of biodiversity conservation and attention to the greater natural balance lies at the heart of agricultural development and community building efforts which sustain Nepali agriculture at its core. By using board game play as a facilitator of cooperative knowledge …
