Early History Of The Shark Bay Prawn Fishery, Western Australia, R. J. Slack-Smith
Fisheries Research Bulletins
The factors leading to the development of the prawn fishery in Shark Bay have been discussed, and a history and account of the fishery to 1969 has been presented. A description has been given of the management measures introduced to control the growth of the fishery, together with some of the underlying rationale behind these measures.
Technical And Allocative Efficiency: Preliminary Ideas Toward Discrimination Between The Hypotheses, John Heineke, M. N. Darrough
Technical And Allocative Efficiency: Preliminary Ideas Toward Discrimination Between The Hypotheses, John Heineke, M. N. Darrough
Economics
Two levels of efficiency lie behind the supply and demand equations of neoclassical economic theory. First, firms are assumed to be technically efficient, in that maximum output is obtained from any given mix of inputs. Second, firms are assumed to be allocatively (or price) efficient, in that input and output mixes are chosen such that profits are maximum. Although it has often been argued that firms must be "efficient" in a competitive economy, only a very limited amount of work has been directed to measuring the extent of any inefficiencies. In this paper we provide a framework for such measurements …

Further Investigation Into The Role Of Education In The Demand For Health Care, Mohammad Al-Hadi Al-Bakir Al-Barazi
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation intends to examine the inconsistency prevailing in the health economics literature between theoretical predictions and empirical findings concerning the role of education in the determination of health care services. Starting from the premise that the household’s stock of health capital is a nondurable commodity which depreciates over time; that it can be augmented by investment; that the household production function for gross investment in health capital stock is homogeneous of degree one in both inputs of health care services and health care time; that a ‘factor-neutral’ education enters the production function of the household as an environmental variable …

Shadow Prices For Project Selection In The Presence Of Distortions: Effective Rates Of Protection And Domestic Resource Costs, T.N. Srinivasan, Jagdish N. Bhagwati
Shadow Prices For Project Selection In The Presence Of Distortions: Effective Rates Of Protection And Domestic Resource Costs, T.N. Srinivasan, Jagdish N. Bhagwati
Faculty Scholarship
The paper addresses the problem of deriving shadow prices for use in project evaluation when the existing allocation is characterized by ad valorem trade distortions. The analysis is used to clarify and resolve the long-standing debate among effective-rate-of-protection and domestic resource-cost proponents as to the respective merits of their measures as methods of project evaluation. The derivation of shadow factor prices is then extended to three major factor market imperfections familiar from extensive trade-theoretic analysis.

An Economic Model For The Rio Grande Drainage Basin, New Mexico, James Fredric Roach
An Economic Model For The Rio Grande Drainage Basin, New Mexico, James Fredric Roach
Economics ETDs
Making the best use of the fully appropriated water supply in most areas of the Rio Grande Drainage Basin remains the major issue facing the state of New Mexico. This dissertation develops a comprehensive and integrative methodological approach capable of evaluating water resources problems in the Rio Grande Basin. A combination of two well-known and utilized economic tools (the input-output and linear programming techniques) served as the basis for model formulation.
The input-output technique was further extended into an interregional context, and served as the basis for the expanded and larger linear programming framework. One set of economic and three …
The Albuquerque Police Strike, Mark Alan Engelbrecht
The Albuquerque Police Strike, Mark Alan Engelbrecht
Economics ETDs
When representatives of the city of Albuquerque and the Albuquerque city police were unable to negotiate a new contract when the previous contract expired on June 30, 1975, the police officers engaged in a work slowdown by issuing less traffic citations. On Saturday, July 12, the officers on the third shift were told to end their slowdown. Instead, the officers on the third shift began a wildcat strike that afternoon. By Saturday night, 240 officers had joined the strike; that number soon grew to about 340 officers out of a total police department of 504. On the following Thursday, those …

Address Given At The Annual Convention Of The Ground Water Management Districts Association, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
It is good to be back in Nebraska. As many of you know, water resources was my major field of endeavor a dozen years ago when I was on the faculty of University of Nebraska. My Ph.D. dissertation involved water law and water administration in the central United States, and I know you have a number of states represented here that were involved in that particular study. Those states were Kansas, Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska, but with some spillover into other geographic areas as well. At that time, of course, I spent a lot of time with people like Don …
