The Economic Impact Of Western Kentucky University On The Bowling Green – Warren County Economy, Stephen Cooper

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The costs incurred by the community resulting from Western Kentucky University’s location – cost of educating children of university related personnel, cost of services provided by the local governments to the university community, and the lost property tax revenue resulting from the tax exemption of university property – were estimated as were the benefits enjoyed by the community as a result of the University’s location – local expenditures, local employment generated by the university’s presence, the university community’s impact on the local banking system’s credit base, and the occupational license tax receipts levied by the city on the university payroll. …

The Determinants And Control Of Money Stock In Nigeria, E. O. Akinnifesi, Toyin Phillips Jun 1978

The Determinants And Control Of Money Stock In Nigeria, E. O. Akinnifesi, Toyin Phillips

Economic and Financial Review

The paper is divided into five sections. Section I reviews Central Bank's monetary control measures as adopted since 1959 thus highlighting the successes and limitations of the Policy instruments. Section II presents a brief review of the controversy between the "monetarists" and the " fiscalists" so as to provide some theoretical underpinnings for this study, while Section III actually deals with the specifications of the behavioural functions. The empirical results are presented in Section IV and the last section summarises the findings and the conclusions thereupon.

Devaluation And Balance Of Payments In Ecowas Countries: A Study Of Nigeria's Exchange Rate Policy, C. C. Ozumba Jun 1978

Devaluation And Balance Of Payments In Ecowas Countries: A Study Of Nigeria's Exchange Rate Policy, C. C. Ozumba

Economic and Financial Review

The purpose of this paper is to review Nigeria's exchange rate policy as outlined above, and in doing so, one finds it compelling, and hopefully rewarding, to take a general look at the exchange rate policies in selected African countries, focusing particularly on the effects of devaluation on balance of payments. Accordingly, the paper first presents an analytical framework in which a monetary approach is considered most useful. The next section introduces a simplified monetary model. Following that, there is a discussion of statistical testing and results. The final section considers the implications for policy in Nigeria, appraising in some …

Attitudes Of Income Maintenance Line Workers In The State Of Oregon About The Causes And Amelioration Of Poverty, Gene Lamar Stutzman

Dissertations and Theses

It has been of some interest to the profession of social work that eligible persons underutilize or fail to use social services and benefits to which they are legally entitled. A number of different reasons have been cited in the social work literature and otherwise generally accepted within the ranks of the social work profession as possible or probable causes of underutilization or lack of use. The variety of reasons includes client lack of knowledge about programs, lack of motivation on the part of eligible clients to apply for benefits and services, client unawareness about legal recourse in securing services, …

A Modeling System For Applied General Equilibrium Analysis, Thomas Rutherford May 1978

A Modeling System For Applied General Equilibrium Analysis, Thomas Rutherford

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Numerical modeling in the Arrow-Debreu framework has emerged as a consistent approach for economic analysis. A major disadvantage of the applied general equilibrium (AGE) framework has been the high degree of technical expertise required for formulating and solving these models. This paper describes a micro-computer for AGE modeling. The system, named MPS/GE, combines an efficient solution algorithm with an interactive user-interface. Using MPS/GE, models containing up to 300 prices and activities can be formulated and solved on an IBM PC. This makes AGE modeling accessible to a wider group of policy analysts and educators than was previously the case.

Toward A Physical Theory Of Economic Activities, Tran Huu Dung May 1978

Toward A Physical Theory Of Economic Activities, Tran Huu Dung

Economics Faculty Publications

A critical survey of all definitions of economics shows that, logically, a study of economic activities from a physical point of view must be considered an integral part of the discipline. One such study could reveal the nature of value-in-use often overlooked in economic theory.

It is posited that the process of use can be taken as the basic analytical building block of whose variations and combinations all economic activities can be shown to be composed. Each use can appear in one of three forms: pure use, consumption, and production (or productive use). The physical criterion on which this distinction …

Nonresident Enrollment Demand At Utah State University, William G. Workman May 1978

Nonresident Enrollment Demand At Utah State University, William G. Workman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The determination of the level of student registration fees at colleges and universities in many cases appears to be made without adequate consideration given to probable enrollment responses and to the associated implications for tuition revenues. This study was aimed at reducing this information gap at Utah State University and focused specifically on past sensitivities of students from neighboring western states to changes in the nonresident charges at USU. The analytical framework employed in this investigation specified a causal link between the proportion of the college-attending populations from these states choosing to enroll at USU and comparative tuition levels.

The …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Impacts Of Oil Shale Development On The Economy Of The Uintah Basin, David Zachary Kaufman May 1978

An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Impacts Of Oil Shale Development On The Economy Of The Uintah Basin, David Zachary Kaufman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The development of oil shale resources will have a significant impact on the Uintah Basin in Utah. To analyze this impact, this study used a regionalized imput-output model. The input-output table for the State of Utah was revised to fit the Uintah Basin, using the RAS technique.

The scarcity of water in the Basin may cause a shift of water use from irrigated agriculture to oil shale. This reduction in agricultural production was estimated, using demand curves for water in agriculture and an intergen programming model which generated minimum water requirements for shale developments from 25,000 barrels per day to …

Import Demand For Wheat: Japanese And Selected Eec Markets, Enayatollah Fakhrai May 1978

Import Demand For Wheat: Japanese And Selected Eec Markets, Enayatollah Fakhrai

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The growing importance of trade internationally as well as for the United States (U.S.) spawned a body of literature concerning import demand, export supply, and trade balance. Most of the empirical work to date has employed estimates of commodity import demand functions derived from traditional linear and log-linear functional forms. These specifications of import demand impose separability restrictions on the consumer's choice between domestic and foreign goods, in addition to confining import demand elasticities to constant values. The policy recommendations made on the basis of the import demand elasticities derived from these traditional models may be misleading. In this study, …

Conservation According To The Pure Theory Of Exhaustible Resources, George Lymbouris May 1978

Conservation According To The Pure Theory Of Exhaustible Resources, George Lymbouris

Economics Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop a theory for defining optimal conservation and applying definition to the prevailing rate of domestic petroleum production. Optimal conservation is defined as action designed to achieve or to maintain, from the point of view of society as a whole, the maximum present value of natural resources (or of a natural resource). The proper "action" is defined according to the pure theory of exhaustible resources. The literature survey is a chronological series of articles concerning this theory.

Through building a model which shows that optimal conservation occurs when the marginal internal rate of …
