The Price Of Unemployment And Inflation And Who Pays, Michael Borrero Mar 1981

The Price Of Unemployment And Inflation And Who Pays, Michael Borrero

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Since the early 1960's many economists and policy makers have contended that full employment and price stability are unattainable goals. Stimulated by the works of A. W. Phillips, a British economist, they have argued that there is an inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment; that is, as unemployment decreases, inflation increases. Phillips in his original article, "The Relationship between Unemployment and the Rate of Change in Money Wage Rates in the United Kingdom,"1 cautiously reasoned that when demand for commodities, services or labor was high relative to supply, prices increase. Increasing prices for labor draw out unemployed people into the …

Taxpayers Rights Amendment: A Sequel To Dakota Proposition?, Philip Favero

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

During their campaign against Dakota Proposition, some of the opponents to that proposed constitutional amendment indicated their interest in a substitute measure to limit taxes in South Dakota. The substitute would involve, they stated, tying South Dakota taxes to the rate of inflation. An example of this kind of measure know as the Taxpayer's Rights Amendment" has been written and may be presented as a petition to change the South Dakota Constitution in a future general election. This Staff Paper includes a brief introductory analysis of the "Taxpayer's Rights Amendment." Suggestions for future research are also offered should the proposed …

Direct Impact Of Forest Harvesting In Northeastern Minnesota, Philip L. Friest Jan 1981

Direct Impact Of Forest Harvesting In Northeastern Minnesota, Philip L. Friest

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Direct impact of harvesting operations is examined as one segment in a survey of interrelationships between elements of the primary forest products industry in northeastern Minnesota, an area known popularly as the Arrowhead Region. This study follows classifications used in collection of data for 1977 from seven Minnesota counties. Information is based largely on responses from companies involved. An Input-Output model was employed in the study for assessing expenditures by loggers for wage payments, purchase of timber stumpage, vehicles and equipment operation, financial services, and employee benefits (FICA, etc.). Comparisons of relative proportions of expenditures by loggers within the study …

Consistent Forecasting For The 1980'S In State Iron Industry Development, Raymond L. Raab, Richard W. Lichty Jan 1981

Consistent Forecasting For The 1980'S In State Iron Industry Development, Raymond L. Raab, Richard W. Lichty

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A large-scale model, SIMLAB, was used to project the iron ore industry through the decade of the 1980's for the state of Minnesota. This forecast shows that past trends in the industry are unlikely to continue through 1990, although output is seen to increase slightly during this period. Future studies will deal with different development scenarios to estimate the impacts of alternate future assumptions from this baseline trend analysis.

How The Imm Can Help Banks, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I am very pleased to be in San Francisco. This is such a delightful city that I sometimes wish I were President of a San Francisco Commodity Exchange. But that would not be fair to Chicago, a truly great city, or to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, an outstanding business and financial institution. I hope all of you will become exposed to them both. You will like what you see. The times they are a changin! And changin fast, everywhere. I head an Exchange that is several decades old and steeped in agricultural tradition. We' were once called the Butter and …

Hedging Techniques For Agricultural Producers, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1981

Hedging Techniques For Agricultural Producers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I am delighted to be here today talking about hedging and how it can be applied to the marketing strategies of agricultural producers in agriculture. It is good to have so much interest developing at the marketing end of agriculture, because it seems do me that too much attention has long been paid to production and too little to marketing. Even in the United States, which has developed perhaps the most sophisticated marketing techniques in the world, farmers are still too production oriented. Futures markets, where hedging techniques can be applied the best, are more than 100 years old in …

Where Have All The Civil Engineering Students Gone? A Study Of Student Choice Of Engineering Department, Dan Bernhardt Jan 1981

Where Have All The Civil Engineering Students Gone? A Study Of Student Choice Of Engineering Department, Dan Bernhardt

Honors Papers

The problem: students in General Engineering at the University of Waterloo are not choosing as often as before to enter Civil Engineering. Increasing numbers of students are choosing Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, creating a large imbalance in the three class sizes. There is tremendous concern about whether this is a long or short run trend, why this imbalance exists, and about what, if anything, should and can be done to correct this imbalance. In this paper, I will construct a logit model of student choice and apply directly to those students who have been in General Engineering at the University …
