Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can “take back” energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical foundations hinders empirical determination of rebound magnitudes. In Part I, we developed foundations of a rigorous, analytical, consumer-sided rebound framework that is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. In this paper (Part II), we develop energy, expenditure, and consumption planes, a novel, mutually consistent, and numerically precise way to visualize and illustrate rebound. Further, we operationalize the macro factor () for macroeconomic rebound. Using the framework and rebound planes, we calculate and show …

Loan Restructuring And Deposit Growth: Evidence From The Market Discipline During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Indra Tumbelaka
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, banks boosted loan restructuring efforts to offer borrowers assistance and preserve credit quality. This study employs dynamic and static panel data from Indonesian commercial banks to include restructured loans as a metric for assessing market discipline prior to and during the pandemic. Depositors shown discipline about banks’ credit risk during the COVID-19 period and exhibited heightened sensitivity to restructured loans. Subsequent analysis indicates that the association between deposit growth and restructured loans was more pronounced in government, small, and publicly listed banks during the outbreak

Triple Shock On External Sustainability In Indonesia, Aloysius Deno Hervino, Insukindro Insukindro, Sekar Utami Setiastuti, Amirullah Setya Hardi
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study evaluates Indonesia’s external sustainability by analyzing exports, imports, and net unilateral transfer payments. The study utilizes Indonesia’s data from the third quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of 2019, applying both a long-run dynamic model and a short-run forward-looking model incorporating triple shocks. This research excludes the period from 2020 onwards due to the economic upheaval in Indonesia resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak. This study concludes that Indonesia’s current account is unsustainable, as neither export nor import variables exhibit a long-term link, hence failing to meet intertemporal budget constraints. Furthermore, imports substantially influence long-term exports, which increase …

Financial Policy For A Green Economy In A Resource-Rich Emerging Economy, Arlyana Abubakar, Prayudhi Azwar, Riris Shanti, Salman Fathoni, Noer Aida Triandini
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This paper analyzes policies aimed at fostering a green economy in a resource-abundant, megadiverse nation such as Indonesia. This study use Delphi and Analytic Network Process methodologies, grounded in the perspectives of regulators, academics, experts, and practitioners in the green economy, to identify the determinants of green financial policies, revealing that fiscal instruments are of paramount importance. Furthermore, both the case and the respondents are Indonesian. This underscores the necessity of instituting incentives in environmentally sustainable sectors and disincentives in carbon-intensive industries. Therefore, the suitable allocation of green budgets within fiscal policy is essential for addressing market failures and expediting …

Exchange Rate And Indonesia Economic Growth, Ayi Supriyadi, Yanfitri Yanfitri, Trinil Arimurti, Sinta Atharinanda
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
We examine the effect of the exchange rate on the economy and the impact of the Dominant Currency Paradigm (DCP) on Indonesia’s export volume. This study employs multiple methodologies, namely the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, the non-linear version of ARDL, and panel regressions. The findings indicated that the depreciation of the exchange rate influenced economic expansion. The beneficial effect was mitigated by the influence of finance as seen in the company’s financial sheet. The findings also indicate the influence of DCP on the volume of international trade in Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: As healthcare systems transition to value-based care models, it is critical to understand factors influencing costs and outcomes in neurosurgery. This study utilizes Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) to assess the impact of surgeon experience and case volume on costs, clinical outcomes, and operative value in lumbar fusions. While TDABC has been applied in various surgical specialties, its use in neurosurgery, particularly in analyzing surgeon-specific factors, remains limited.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single center, analyzing lumbar instrumented arthrodesis procedures from 2017 to 2019. Primary variables included surgeon experience (years) and case volume (annual procedures). Confounding …

Does Digital Finance Move Together With Technology Innovation In China?, Zhu Wenhui, Zhang Jiajie, Hu Chuanxia, Dong Hanwei
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Existing academic research has predominantly examined the unidirectional impact of digital finance on technological innovation, thereby neglecting the reciprocal interplay between these two domains. This study fills this gap by investigating the long-term bidirectional cointegrated relationship between digital finance and technological innovation. Using panel cointegration estimation methods on panel data from 286 Chinese cities during 2011–2020, empirical results reveal a long-term co-movement between digital finance and technological innovation. Pooled Mean Group estimation demonstrates that digital finance makes significant contributions to technological innovation in both long-term and short-term contexts. However, sub-sample analyses show that digital finance consistently boosts technological innovation in …

The Impact Of Clean Energy Technology Incentives On Mineral Demand: An Economic Framework For Measuring Response, Hamdiya Orleans-Boham, Mahelet G. Fikru, Kwame Awuah-Offei
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The existing literature establishes the link between clean energy technology (CET) expansion and rising mineral demand but lacks a comprehensive analysis of the transmission mechanisms through which CET policy incentives particularly production and consumption subsidies affect mineral markets. This study addresses the gap by developing an economic model where a CET producer optimally determines mineral input demand and production volume, where the concept of elasticity is used to measure the response of mineral demand to policy incentives. Analytical results demonstrate that the elasticity of mineral demand with respect to CET policies is highly sensitive to returns to scale of CET …

Semiparametric Learning Of Integral Functionals On Submanifolds, Xiaohong Chen, Wayne Yuan Guo
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper studies the semiparametric estimation and inference of integral functionals on submanifolds, which arise naturally in a variety of econometric settings. For linear integral functionals on a regular submanifold, we show that the semiparametric plugin estimator attains the minimax-optimal convergence rate n—s2s+d-m, where s is the Hölder smoothness order of the underlying nonparametric function, d is the dimension of the first-stage nonparametric estimation, m is the dimension of the submanifold over which the integral is taken. This rate coincides with the standard minimax-optimal rate for a (d − m)-dimensional nonparametric estimation problem, illustrating that integration over the …

Is Inequity In Nba Team Salaries Hurting Team Performance?, Alec R. Plante
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
The NBA is known for being the premier basketball league. However, are the allegedly best minds in the sport choosing salaries in a way that contributes to success? Our research extrapolates trends between team equity and win rates. We use Gini coefficients to establish team equities across the league between the 2011-2012 and 2024-2025 seasons. Our research establishes a relationship between team equity and win rates. This suggests that more equitable teams, in relation to held constant variables like All-NBA selections, may be more successful compared to other teams. We speculate on the reasons for this effect, including the possibility …
Shutdowns And Startups: How Covid-19 Policies Shaped Entrepreneurial Trends Across U.S. States, Mia Sideris
Shutdowns And Startups: How Covid-19 Policies Shaped Entrepreneurial Trends Across U.S. States, Mia Sideris
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
The COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented impact on the US economy. Severe restrictions were placed on nearly every state, culminating with the declaration of a national emergency in March 2020. The intent of these restrictions was to safeguard public health, while unintentionally imposing operational burdens on businesses. This paper explores how heterogeneity in state level policy responses influenced entrepreneurial activity. Using the synthetic control method and data on mandated workplace closures, we estimate the impact of these actions on business applications per capita in the state of South Carolina, which was late to impose these measures. We find that if …
Money And Social Exclusion In Networks, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Edoardo Gallo
Money And Social Exclusion In Networks, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Edoardo Gallo
ESI Working Papers
Globalization offers unparalleled opportunities to expand welfare through cooperation across large networks of unrelated individuals. Social exclusion – permanent or temporary – and monetary exchange are institutions that in theory can incentivize cooperation. In an experiment, we evaluate their relative performance and interaction in anonymous networks of different sizes. Permanent social exclusion (ostracism) reduces long-run economic potential by leading to sparse networks. Monetary exchange and temporary social exclusion perform similarly well in small networks. In large networks, however, monetary exchange is the only institution that promotes full cooperation by crowding out ostracism and keeping the network complete. An insight is …

Porous cranial lesions (cribra cranii and cribra orbitalia) are widely used by archaeologists as skeletal markers of poor child health. However, their use has not been validated with systematic data from contemporary populations, where there has been little evidence of these lesions or their health relevance. Using 375 in vivo computed tomography scans from a cohort-representative sample of adults aged 40+ years from the Bolivian Amazon, among food-limited, high-mortality forager-farmers, we identified cribra cranii on 46 (12.3%) and cribra orbitalia on 23 (6%). Cribra orbitalia was associated with several hallmarks of compromised immune function, including fewer B cells, fewer naïve …

Tariffs And Trade Deficits, Lorenzo Caliendo, Samuel Kortum, Fernando Parro
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper develops a complete-markets model to analyze the determinants of endogenous trade imbalances across countries. We introduce a framework where countries can trade in Arrow-Debreu securities to insure against different states of the world, which enables them to run deficits in some states and surpluses in others. The model allows for counterfactual analysis of various trade policy scenarios, such as unilateral tariff impositions. We derive the conditions under which trade deficits arise endogenously and discuss implications for welfare and trade policy analysis.

Background
Little is known about arterial stiffness in rural subsistence populations that experience few cardiovascular risk factors. We conducted a cross‐sectional study comparing 3 arterial stiffness metrics among Tsimane forager‐horticulturalists with 2 representative US cohorts. Methods
Arterial elasticity (the inverse of stiffness) markers C1 (large artery elasticity) and C2 (small artery elasticity) were measured using a tonometry device among 490 Tsimane adults (mean age, 51.2±10.1 years; 55% women), and compared with 6294 multiethnic US adults (mean age, 62.0±10.2 years; 52% women) from MESA (Multi‐Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). Carotid‐femoral pulse wave velocity was assessed using the foot‐to‐foot method in a smaller …Energy Expenditure And Obesity Across The Economic Spectrum, Amanda Mcgrosky, Amy Luke, Leonore Arab, Kweku Bedu-Addo, Alberto G. Global economic development has been associated with an increased prevalence of obesity and related health problems. Increased caloric intake and reduced energy expenditure are both cited as development-related contributors to the obesity crisis, but their relative importance remains unresolved. Here, we examine energy expenditure and two measures of obesity (body fat percentage and body mass index, BMI) for 4,213 adults from 34 populations across six continents and a wide range of lifestyles and economies, including hunter-gatherer, pastoralist, farming, and industrialized populations. Economic development was positively associated with greater body mass, BMI, and body fat, but also with greater total, basal, …

We show how to use randomized participation incentives to test and account for nonresponse bias in surveys. We first use data from a survey about labor market conditions, linked to full-population administrative data, to provide evidence of large differences in labor market outcomes between survey participants and nonparticipants, differences which would not be observable to an analyst who only has access to the survey data. These differences persist even after correcting for observable characteristics. We then use the randomized incentives in our survey to directly test for nonresponse bias, and find evidence of substantial bias. Next, we apply a range …

Economic Development & Workforce
This fact sheet presents 2022 data on the industrial chemistry workforce in five Mountain West states: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The American Chemistry Council’s (ACC’s) report, “2023 Guide to the Business of Chemistry,” offers insights into the chemistry industry’s role in the U.S. economy. This fact sheet focuses on 2022 state-level data related to the number of chemistry establishments, the number of individuals employed in the industry, and the average wages and salaries of industry workers in the Mountain West.

Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can “take back” energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical foundations hinders empirical determination of the size of rebound. A new clarity is needed, one that involves both economics and energy analysis. In this paper (Part I), we advance foundations of a rigorous analytical framework for consumer-sided rebound that starts at the microeconomic level and is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. We develop foundations of a framework that (i) clarifies the energy, expenditure, and consumption aspects of rebound, (ii) combines embodied energy …

Effects Of Fair Workweek Laws On Labor Market Outcomes, Joseph Pickens, Aaron Sojourner
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper models fair workweek regulations that require employers to provide employees with (1) schedule predictability via advance notice of their work schedule and premium payments for short-notice changes, and (2) access to hours meaning they must offer open hours to existing employees before hiring new workers. We develop a theoretical model of employers’ responses to these provisions and their implications for employment. Guided by the model, we estimate the effects of recently-adopted fair workweek regulation in New York City’s fast-food sector using a synthetic difference-in-differences design. We find a null employment effect.
