Income Inequality, Weak Institutions, And The Emergence Of Reform-Abortive Corruption, Raul V. Fabella, Karl Robert L. Jandoc, Majah-Leah V. Ravago Dec 2025

Income Inequality, Weak Institutions, And The Emergence Of Reform-Abortive Corruption, Raul V. Fabella, Karl Robert L. Jandoc, Majah-Leah V. Ravago

Economics Department Faculty Publications

We propose a statutory/norm approach for understanding the emergence of rent-seeking corruption using a 2 x 2 collective action game. In the status quo, self-interested players converge on a market-failure equilibrium, which is inferior to the cooperative outcome. The government attempts to shift behavior toward cooperation by enacting statutes that prohibit defection through penalties and enforcement mechanisms. The effectiveness of these interventions depends on sufficiently high expected penalties and low implementation costs, which are conditions characteristic of upright governance. When government is weak, however—particularly when it is vulnerable to bribes—statutes are undermined. Income inequality magnifies this vulnerability: elites benefit from …

A Thesis On Incentive Structures, Shirking Dynamics, And Market Valuation In Major League Baseball: A Statcast Analysis Of Worker Effort Levels, Charles Jordan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how guaranteed contract length influences player effort and market valuation in Major League Baseball using high resolution Statcast data across over 1,200 player season observations. Fixed effects regressions on the 2015 to 2024 seasons show directionally consistent but statistically imprecise shirking and final year effort spikes in hard hit rate and sprint speed. Machine learning models (OLS and Random Forest) predict next year Dollars Over League Average (DOL) with out of sample MAE approximately $11.4–11.8 million and approximately 0.23–0.27, with plate appearances, hard hit rate, sprint speed, and contract timing as top predictors. Embedding these findings in …

Mountain Communities During A Time Of War: A Case Study Of The Hutsul Region In The Carpathian Mountains Of Ukraine, Pavlo Rybaruk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the ethno-ecological technologies employed by the Hutsul people within the highland agrarian economy of the Carpathian Mountains. Over centuries, the Hutsuls have developed ethno-ecological technologies that maintain ecological integrity while supporting community livelihoods.

The study addresses three primary research questions: What are the most important ethno-ecological technologies of the Hutsul highland economy? How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be applied to economic, agricultural, and tourism development in the Hutsul region? How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be combined with contemporary approaches to encourage sustainable development in the region?

The research explores the devastating impact of the Russian …

Trade Dependency And Resilience: An Analysis Of Egypt’S Wheat Import Dynamics During The Russia-Ukraine War, Maha Elhini, Jomana M. Eiisa, Rasha Hammam

Economics

Purpose

Provided that Egypt is the world’s largest wheat importer, the conflict between its primary suppliers presents significant challenges to its trade stability and food security. This paper aims to investigate the impacts of the Russia–Ukraine (RU) war on Egypt’s trade dynamics, with a particular focus on wheat imports over the period 1995–2023.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) model to estimate the relationship between macroeconomic variables and Egypt’s trade performance, as well as agricultural determinants and wheat import dynamics.

Findings

The empirical results show that Egypt’s GDP growth rate and its exchange rate have …

Connectedness Of Uncertainty, Volatility, And Stock Market Performance, Szczepan Urjasz Nov 2025

Connectedness Of Uncertainty, Volatility, And Stock Market Performance, Szczepan Urjasz

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This study examines the dynamic connectedness and spillover effects among various financial and economic indicators, including uncertainty indices, market volatility, and stock market indices, from 3 June 2008, to 30 December 2024. This interconnectedness implies that shocks originating in one market or asset class can rapidly transmit to others, underscoring the potential for systemic risk and financial contagion. The US emerges as a significant net transmitter of influence within the global financial system, with the VIX playing a crucial role in influencing global financial conditions. Major European equity markets also transmit influence, while the Geopolitical Risk Index (GRI) and the …

Financial Safety Nets, Bank Risk And Depositor Behaviour In Central And Eastern Europe, Dorota Skała Nov 2025

Financial Safety Nets, Bank Risk And Depositor Behaviour In Central And Eastern Europe, Dorota Skała

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

We studied expansions in financial safety nets and their relation to bank risk and depositor behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe, using time-varying regulatory data. In general, we find that stronger deposit insurance and state aid granted to banks are linked with both bank risk and depositor behaviour. However, these relations critically depend on whether safety net instruments are used separately or simultaneously. When deposit insurance is strengthened or state aid is granted, we confirm the standard moral hazard behaviour of banks visible in higher bank risk. In parallel, we observe more elevated deposit growth, implying lower market discipline. Conversely, …

Immigration And The U.S. Economy Under Obama And Trump, Eliz Gevorgian Nov 2025

Immigration And The U.S. Economy Under Obama And Trump, Eliz Gevorgian

Political Science Student Research

This paper examines the economic effects of the United States' immigration policy under President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump. Between 2009 and 2017, the Obama administration introduced programs such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and expanded access to student and work visas. These actions coincided with steady GDP growth averaging about 2 percent per year and a decline in unemployment from 9.9 percent in 2009 to 4.7 percent in 2016. The Trump administration, in office from 2017 to 2021, implemented more restrictive immigration measures, including the 2017 travel ban, reduced refugee admissions, increased H1B visa scrutiny, and …

“This Is Not Normal”: The Global Academy’S Resistance To Authoritarianism And Academic Capitalism, Catherine A. Labrenz, Christian Adeleke, Maria Lúcia T. Garcia, Aline Pandolfi, Mara Mattioni, Fabíola Xavier Leal, Marcela Nava

Fast Capitalism

Summary: In the wake of rising authoritarianism and neoliberal retrenchment, academic institutions across the globe are increasingly pressured to suppress dissent, sanitize curricula, and deprioritize justice-based scholarship. Drawing from responses to political repression in Brazil and Argentina, this paper connects present-day U.S. conditions to transnational histories of academic resistance.

Findings: We locate today’s institutional silencing within the broader logics of academic capitalism and authoritarian governance, emphasizing how compliance, rather than critical engagement, is becoming the new normal.

Applications: Drawing on radical traditions of academic and professional resistance from the Americas, we present lessons learned and action steps …

Masses, Platforms, And The New Data Domination: Repressive Desublimation Revisited, Raymond L.M. Lee Nov 2025

Masses, Platforms, And The New Data Domination: Repressive Desublimation Revisited, Raymond L.M. Lee

Fast Capitalism

The world now resembles a mosaic of platforms orchestrating subjective responses to myriad digital stimuli in everyday communication and conduct. People appear to find fulfillment mainly through intense engagement with platforms that thrive on data produced by online entanglements. This is a world society of data domination where power is derived from high-tech interconnectivity, focused on an interplay between technological innovations and mass distraction. Platforms are seen as digital monopolies banking on mass online participation for data extraction and control. In that sense, they foster new forms of desublimation that Herbert Marcuse would have regarded as a re-flowering of repressive …

Promoting Women’S Land Ownership Rights In Tanzania: The Role Of Wlac As A Legal Empowerment Ngo, Norbeth Sixbert Nov 2025

Promoting Women’S Land Ownership Rights In Tanzania: The Role Of Wlac As A Legal Empowerment Ngo, Norbeth Sixbert

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Despite Tanzania's progressive legal frameworks that recognize women's rights to own and inherit land, significant gaps remain between policy and practice. This paper explores the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in promoting women's land ownership rights, using the Women's Legal Aid Centre (WLAC) as a case study. Located in Kinondoni Municipal, Dar es Salaam, WLAC employs a multifaceted approach that empowers women and safeguards their land rights. While WLAC has achieved notable success, challenges exist and are exacerbated by overlapping statutory and customary legal systems that often disadvantage women. WLAC's multilateral engagement has helped to navigate these obstacles, yet structural …

Coup-Proofing As A Tool For Authoritarian Survival In Central Africa: A Comparative Study Of Teodoro Obiang In Equatorial Guinea And Paul Biya In Cameroon, Prince Ifoh Nov 2025

Coup-Proofing As A Tool For Authoritarian Survival In Central Africa: A Comparative Study Of Teodoro Obiang In Equatorial Guinea And Paul Biya In Cameroon, Prince Ifoh

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

For many African leaders, the most serious threat to their rule does not come from elections or public protests but from the people closest to them—the military and ruling elites. This paper examines how Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea and Paul Biya of Cameroon have remained in power for more than four decades by carefully reshaping their security institutions in ways that minimize coup risks. Drawing on established theories of authoritarian survival and a comparative analysis of both regimes, the research shows that they rely on a deliberate set of coup-proofing tactics, including the placement of trusted allies in …

At The Crossroads: Ryan Coogler’S Metaphysical Meditation On Blues Music’S Power Of Salvation And The Terror Of Racial Predation In “Sinners”, Terri Bowles

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

In Sinners (2025), written and directed by Ryan Coogler, intercultural histories of music, religion and oral tradition inform a modern and complex horror tale confronting the terror of Jim Crow in the post–World War I Mississippi Delta. The film, starring frequent Coogler collaborator and muse Michael B. Jordan as twin war veterans out to reestablish their lives as juke joint owners, coalesces themes of economic repression, racial voyeurism, and secular and religious entanglements with cinematic horror allegories of objectification, consumption and possession. This review explores the film’s tense and violent examination of these themes and the lived and imagined spaces …

Exploring The Bank Lending Channel: How Bank Characteristics Shape Monetary Policy Effectiveness, Filip Świtała

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This paper examines how individual bank characteristics influence the transmission of monetary policy through the bank lending channel. Using panel data and a Fixed Effects model validated by the Hausman test, the author analyses how bank size, capitalization, profitability and asset quality affect responses to monetary tightening. The study highlights the importance of inter-bank differences in shaping monetary policy effectiveness and offers insights for regulatory frameworks and macroprudential policies aimed at strengthening financial stability.

Analyzing The Role And Impact Of Energy Resources On The South China Sea Dispute, Adam Opp Nov 2025

Analyzing The Role And Impact Of Energy Resources On The South China Sea Dispute, Adam Opp

Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy

The South China Sea is a critical but contested body of water that has been the source of much international debate and focus. The sea is a strategic maritime route and one of the most important waterways for regional and global trade. The South China Sea features rich natural resources such as fisheries and hydrocarbons, especially unknown amounts of oil and natural gas remaining untapped throughout the sea. Geological surveys estimate extremely lucrative quantities of oil and natural gas in the South China Sea, which drives the conflict, as nations with competing territorial claims seek to control not just the …

Decarbonizing China's Economy: Empirical Insights On Policy Stringency, Industrial Transformation, And Green Innovation, Saqib Munir Nov 2025

Decarbonizing China's Economy: Empirical Insights On Policy Stringency, Industrial Transformation, And Green Innovation, Saqib Munir

Arab Economic and Business Journal

China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, grapples with aligning economic growth with its 2030 carbon peak and 2060 neutrality goals, yet the combined impact of policy stringency, industrial transformation, and green innovation on carbon intensity remains insufficiently understood. This study examined the drivers of carbon intensity in China from 1999 to 2023, analysing how policy stringency, industrial restructuring, green innovation, renewable energy, foreign direct investment, urbanization, and energy efficiency interact. Using World Bank, we applied econometric techniques like ARDL, FMOLS, and variance decomposition to capture dynamic relationships and address endogeneity. Results confirm that stringent policies and shifts from heavy …

Americans' Top Concerns Reflect Both Common Ground And Partisan Splits: Economy Unites, But Policy And Politics Divide, Hwayong Shin

Weidenbaum Center Survey (WCS) Reports

Over the past two years, Americans have lived through several political shocks—both at home and abroad. In 2023, the removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Supreme Court’s reversal on affirmative action, the outbreak of the Israel–Hamas war, and Donald Trump’s multiple indictments shook the political landscape. In 2024, Americans faced a series of events surrounding the presidential election—Trump’s conviction on felony charges, the Supreme Court’s subsequent ruling granting him presidential immunity, Joe Biden’s faltering debate performance that led to his withdrawal and Kamala Harris’s nomination, and Trump’s return to the White House. Since the new administration took office in …

Dictators And Lying Dictators: An Experimental Investigation Of Preference Based-Group Biases In Chinese And American Interactions, Aaron S. Berman, Saika Cer Askin, Shapeng Jiang, David Porter, Jason Shachat

ESI Working Papers

This study examines group-conditional generosity and behavior using students from Chapman University in the United States and Wuhan University in China. Participants make allocation decisions in either a standard Dictator Game (DG) or a Lying Dictator Game (LDG), where a privately reported die roll determines the allocation. We vary whether participants interact with members of their own or the other university community. The LDG game, through the possibility of plausible deniability, allows for the moderation of image concerns that potentially influence DG behavior. We complement these tasks with individual decision benchmarks that exclude the Receiver to control for group differences …

Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney Nov 2025

Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Current science indicates that warming and elevated atmospheric CO2 will have ambiguous results for crop productivity depending on crop type and geographic location, whereas increased heat stress makes livestock and human labor less productive. The differential impacts across regions will alter comparative advantage and shift the patterns of global trade. This paper employs an economywide trade model to assess all three types of productivity shocks under a 3°C global warming scenario. We find that the widening agricultural trade deficits persist, even as the overall US trade balance improves due to enhanced investment inflows.
