Defense Cuts: What Might Connecticut Expect On The Manufacturing Employment Front?, Bruce D. Wundt Sep 1991

Defense Cuts: What Might Connecticut Expect On The Manufacturing Employment Front?, Bruce D. Wundt

New England Journal of Public Policy

Connecticut has enjoyed considerable economic prosperity as a result of its reliance on the defense industry. However, as a consequence of reductions in federal spending on defense, this favorable trend of many years is reversing, unfortunately, while the region is also experiencing a general economic slowdown. Many Connecticut industries must prepare for a new era of reducing their dependence on defense contracts and diversify into new markets and products. State policymakers can help during these uncertain times by encouraging private and public retraining of labor resources and the expansion of industries that will promote economic stability.

An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu Sep 1991

An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu

Economic and Financial Review

In this econometric revisitation of inflation in Nigeria, an extensive review of the literature and evidence has been attempted culminating in a specification of the various alternative hypotheses on the causes of inflation. While not ruling out the validity of several theories of inflation in the Nigerian situation, empirical evidence indicates that increases in real domestic produce or supply situation, especially food, and law cost of production of consumables, tended to ameliorate inflation. On the other hand, increases in government expenditure, especially deficits, tend to increase the money supply and worsen depreciation of the exchange rate, which in turn intensify …

Critique Of Contingent Valuation And Travel Cost Methods For Valuing Natural Resources And Ecosystems, W. David Eberle, F. Gregory Hayden Sep 1991

Critique Of Contingent Valuation And Travel Cost Methods For Valuing Natural Resources And Ecosystems, W. David Eberle, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

In July 1989 the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. disallowed the method that had been established by the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) for determining what a corporation would pay in the case of injury to an ecosystem from hazardous waste spills [Ohio v. Interior 1989]. The DOI method was based on neoclassical methodology and appraisal techniques. The Court ruled that "restoration is the proper remedy for injury to property where measurement of damages by some other method will fail to compensate fully for the injury," and that "natural resources have value that is not readily …

The New Wave Of Environmental Regulation: The Impacts On Business And Consumers, Murray L. Weidenbaum Aug 1991

The New Wave Of Environmental Regulation: The Impacts On Business And Consumers, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

Following the regulatory excesses of the 1970s and the reforms of the 1980s, the policy pendulum is swinging back again. On the surface, the government imposing socially desirable requirements on business seems to be a cheap way of achieving national objectives. But every time a government agency attempts to safeguard the environment or foster occupational health or promote product safety, it imposes a more expensive method of production on businesses. Consumers, meanwhile, suffer by paying for these hidden regulations.

The Future Of The U.S. Defense Industry, Murray L. Weidenbaum Jul 1991

The Future Of The U.S. Defense Industry, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The U.S. defense industry is at a fork in the road and faces the prospect of substantial declines. There are two approaches that can be taken: Convert to civilian production or cut back and slim down. Conversion has a great deal of appeal, as it keeps the jobs of defense workers in place. The cut-back alternative is an austerity measure designed to maintain the financial health of the defense firms. The purpose of this paper is to provide some guidance in the selection between these two alternatives.

The Global Economy And The American Welfare State, Howard Jacob Karger Jun 1991

The Global Economy And The American Welfare State, Howard Jacob Karger

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The American social welfare state is approaching a crisis because of the global economy. Survival in a new world economy requires corporations to become more efficient, a strategy which leads to a rapidly changing technology, plant shutdowns, and industrial reorganization. To aid corporations, government often curbs taxes to make capital available for investment. These policies can lead to governmental debt, reduced welfare services, a deterioration in the infrastructure, and myriad social problems. This article investigates the effects of the global economy on the American welfare state.

Toward A More Comprehensive Explanation Of Declining Black Male Youth Employment, Mark Israel '91 May 1991

Toward A More Comprehensive Explanation Of Declining Black Male Youth Employment, Mark Israel '91

Honors Projects

By any standard, the employment position of black males has deteriorated dramatically over the last 25 years. The magnitude and duration of this decline have convinced policy makers and economists alike that serious concern is warranted. Between 1968 and 1988, for example, the employment position of black males, 16 to 19, fell nearly ten points, from just over 38 percent to 29 percent. This decline, which is similar to that in the 20 to 24 year old age group, is indicative of a crisis inside our nation's ghettos, where millions of black male youths are without work and not attending …

Bringing Japanese Manufacturing Systems To America: The Feasibility Of Implementing Just-In-Time Production In The United States, Magda Lacharite May 1991

Bringing Japanese Manufacturing Systems To America: The Feasibility Of Implementing Just-In-Time Production In The United States, Magda Lacharite

Senior Scholar Papers

This paper addresses the feasibility of implementing Japanese manufacturing systems in the United States. The recent success of Japanese transplant companies suggests that Just-In-Time (JIT) production is possible within America's industrial environment. Once American workers receive proper training, they have little difficulty participating in rapid setup procedures and utilizing the kanban system. Japanese transplants are gradually developing Japanese-style relationships with their American supplier companies by initiating long-term, mutually beneficial agreements. They are also finding ways to cope with America's problem of distance, which is steadily decreasing as an obstacle to JIT delivery. American companies, however, encounter Significant problems in trying …

The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups May 1991

The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In considering the relationship between the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs and any given state, one must examine not only the economic reasons for acceptance and participation, but also the political. This is especially true when dealing with the Soviet Union. In researching this topic, I have found that economics and politics are deeply interwoven into the fabric of international dealings with the Soviets on any level and at any given time.

Soviet participation in the GATT goes back to the very beginnings of the Bretton Woods institutions and of the International Trade Organization. While this participation runs contrary …

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller May 1991

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic impact of reducing the amount of nitrate leached out of the root zone under irrigation in the arid West was examined. A general introduction into the nature of the problem and a review of the literature was provided in chapter I. In chapter ll the economic incentives of irrigation management were evaluated under the assumptions of both profit-maximizing and utility-maximizing (in reducing cost and effort expended in irrigation) decision-making criteria. The results indicate that there is a coincidence of interests of the farmer and the environment. Both behaviors result in less nitrate leaching than less profitable or less …

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill May 1991

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the nature, composition and determinants of Singapore's early stage technology exports. The pattern of these exports reflects the quite unique mix of policy and institutional features in Singapore's environment - remarkably high growth, very open economy, rapid structural change, particularly intense economic relations with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, and a pervasive and paternalistic state role. The bases of Singapore's comparative advantage in these service exports are identified, and some general implications from its experience are analyzed.

Specification Tests Based On The Heterogeneous Generalized Gamma Model Of Duration: With An Application To Kennan's Strike Data, Sanjiv Jaggia Apr 1991

Specification Tests Based On The Heterogeneous Generalized Gamma Model Of Duration: With An Application To Kennan's Strike Data, Sanjiv Jaggia

Economics

In this paper, tests for neglected heterogeneity and functional form misspeciftcation of some commonly used parametric distributions are derived within a heterogeneous generalized gamma model. It is argued that the conventional test of heterogeneity may not be valid when the underlying hazard function is misspecified. Hence, if the estimated hazard function is deemed restrictive, tests for functional form misspecification should accompany any test of heterogeneity. An empirical illustration based on Kennan's (1985) model of strikes is used to show that incorrect inferences may be drawn, as in a number of previous analyses, if the relevant restrictions are not tested jointly.

Term Structure Of Interest Rates In The Singapore Asian Dollar Market, Tom K. Y. Lee, Yiu Kuen Tse Apr 1991

Term Structure Of Interest Rates In The Singapore Asian Dollar Market, Tom K. Y. Lee, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates empirically the term structure of interest rates in the Singapore Asian Dollar Market. We consider extended versions of the ARCH-M model of Engle, Lilien, and Robins (1987). The extended models permit autocorrelation, skewness and leptokurtosis in the residuals. The robustness of the empirical tests with respect to alternative specifications of the ARCH process is examined. It turns out that there is significant time-varying term premium, and this conclusion is independent of the hypothesized ARCH model.

The Relationship Between On-Budget And Off-Budget Government, David Joulfaian, Michael L. Marlow Mar 1991

The Relationship Between On-Budget And Off-Budget Government, David Joulfaian, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

This paper studies the hypothesis that controls on on-budget government spending leads to greater off-budget activity. Existence of a substitution effect suggests that our ability to control and measure the size of government is more difficult than previously thought.

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Democracy, David S. Mason Mar 1991

Public Opinion In Poland's Transition To Market Democracy, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Public opinion research has changed dramatically in the last ten years in Poland, in terms of its methodology, scope, and role in political change. During the "first" Solidarity era (1980-81), the genie of public opinion was let out of the bottle, and even martial law could not entirely put it back. Public opinion polling in the 1980s became more sophisticated and more common, and began to tackle increasingly sensitive political issues. Public opinion came to play a role in the political process, and to give the Polish population a sense of its own purpose and values. It also revealed the …
