Multiple Regression Analysis On The S & P 500 Index, Barry White Jan 1995

Multiple Regression Analysis On The S & P 500 Index, Barry White

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The purpose of this research was to determine which, if any, financial and economic variables significantly affect the closing value of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. The goal of finding the significant variables which affect the Standard & Poor's 500 Index was accomplished by performing a multiple regression analysis. This regression model used the closing quarterly value of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index as the dependent variable. The independent variables included the 90-day Treasury Bill rate, domestic corporate profits, and real disposable personal income. The data set for each of these variables was their closing quarterly value for …

Futures Contracting And Dividend Uncertainty In Experimental Asset Markets, David P. Porter, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1995

Futures Contracting And Dividend Uncertainty In Experimental Asset Markets, David P. Porter, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Prices in experimental asset markets tend to bubble and then crash to dividend value at the end of the asset's useful life. Explanations for this phenomenon are (1) that participants cannot form reliable future price expectations or (2) dividend risk aversion. We report the results of experiments to test these hypotheses. In one experimental series, a futures market is introduced so that participants can obtain information on future share prices. In another series of experiments, the per-period dividend is known with certainty. The futures market treatment had little effect on the character of bubble. The certain dividend treatment had little …

Adam Smith’S Unnaturally Natural (Nonetheless Naturally Unnatural) Use Of The Word Natural, Spencer J. Pack Jan 1995

Adam Smith’S Unnaturally Natural (Nonetheless Naturally Unnatural) Use Of The Word Natural, Spencer J. Pack

Economics Faculty Publications

Natural and nature are complex words, fraught with ambiguity and contradiction. This paper does not attempt to give a complete account of Smith's use of these words. However, it does demonstrate that Smith did not necessarily approve of what he called "natural" or "nature". Economists and others who assume otherwise are in error. A study, analysis, and/or interpretation of Smith's work which depends upon this (at times unstated) assumption - that Smith necessarily approved of "nature" or the "natural"- needs to be read with great care; perhaps even incredulity.1

A New Social Contract For The American Workplace: From Paternalism To Partnering, Murray L. Weidenbaum, Kenneth W. Chilton Nov 1994

A New Social Contract For The American Workplace: From Paternalism To Partnering, Murray L. Weidenbaum, Kenneth W. Chilton

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

As American business struggles to cope with global competition, technological breakthroughs, and various forms of deregulation, the workplace is being thrown into turmoil. Against this backdrop, 1994 is also on pace to set a record for publicly announced downsizings, most of them justified under the banner of "restructuring." This study is the first comprehensive look at this evolving picture.

Comparative Efficiencies: National And Military Service, John Sondey Oct 1994

Comparative Efficiencies: National And Military Service, John Sondey

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The National Service Act of 1993 is viewed as a means of inculcating a sense of personal and social responsibility in young adults. The present emphasis on fiscal responsibility and budget reduction implies that any new expenditure program be funded by either: (a) reductions in present programs; or, (b) new taxes. As new taxes are regarded as "politically incorrect" by legislators seeking to extend their tenure, program cuts become mandatory. It is proposed that military downsizing is one means of funding national service; and that the tradeoff is suboptimal. Downsizing adversely affects minorities and the least skilled - who benefit …

The Influence Of International On Union Firm Hiring And Worker Union Choice, Dwight Adamson, Mark Partridge Oct 1994

The Influence Of International On Union Firm Hiring And Worker Union Choice, Dwight Adamson, Mark Partridge

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Union opposition to free trade policies suggests that international trade damages the union movement. Previous research has found little relationship between union wages and international trade. However, greater trade may hinder unions by reducing the likelihood that workers enter the union sector. A bivariate partial observability probit model is used to predict union choice with respect to risk aversion, union strategic behavior, and product market effects of trade. The model estimates the probability of workers entering the union sector queue and the probability of being hired from the union queue. The results suggest that trade has had some adverse effects …

Uncertainty Over The Quality Of Labor Inputs: A Nonmonopoly Theory Of Union Wages And Hours Worked, Dwight Adamson, Scott Fausti Oct 1994

Uncertainty Over The Quality Of Labor Inputs: A Nonmonopoly Theory Of Union Wages And Hours Worked, Dwight Adamson, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Traditional theoretical explanations of union wage effects rely on a monopoly theory of wage determination. Using union monopoly power to set wages implies that unions face a tradeoff between higher wages and lower union sector employment. Earle and Pencavel (1990) find a positive union effect (relative to the nonunion sector) on wages and hours of work. Their empirical result appears to be inconsistent with the theoretical implications of union monopoly power. If unions are able to force unionized firms off their labor demand curve to the point where both wages and hours worked increase, then in a competitive environment, nonunion …

It includes a review of the most recent employment trend and projection data available from the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training, information about several business-based workplace education models, and a discussion of the specific education and training needs of workers across the age/skill continuum. For the purpose of this discussion, the education and training system are broadly defined to include existing public, private, and …

Access To Capital And Technical Assistance, Richard J. Ward Sep 1994

Access To Capital And Technical Assistance, Richard J. Ward

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article summarizes and analyzes the views of select leaders in business, labor, banking, the government, and academia with regard to the constraints, obstacles, and recommendations to achieve economic growth in Massachusetts. The role of the state government in addressing these issues receives special attention. Access to capital and technical assistance had been regarded by many as the key constraint, particularly during the recession of the early 1990s. The author analyzes inconvenient government systems, bottlenecks, and bureaucracy as throttling the flow of capital to small-business entrepreneurs. The analysis concludes, however, that unless the state cum federal government finds ways to …

Economic Growth Issues In Massachusetts Rural Areas And Small Cities, Nancy Goff Sep 1994

Economic Growth Issues In Massachusetts Rural Areas And Small Cities, Nancy Goff

New England Journal of Public Policy

In developing a strategy for economic development, state government must consider the special needs of its small cities and rural areas. Well-meaning policies crafted for metropolitan areas have unintended and often negative consequences when applied statewide. This article is a revision of the author's topical discussion paper for the August 6, 1992, Conference on Rural and Small City Development at Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner. It was used by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Affairs and the University of Massachusetts in developing a statewide economic development strategy.

Budget Policy And Fiscal Crisis: A Political Matrix, Francis J. Leazes Jr., Robert Sieczkiewicz Sep 1994

Budget Policy And Fiscal Crisis: A Political Matrix, Francis J. Leazes Jr., Robert Sieczkiewicz

New England Journal of Public Policy

A study of 134 Rhode Island programs, administered during the state's budget crisis in the fiscal years 1987 to 1991, yielded a number of important lessons. The more mandated formula spending there was in a budget, the more uncontrollable was the budget. There is a spending bias ingrained in the political culture. Some nonentitlement spending can be difficult to curtail. Cutback management strategies are inadequate to address significant revenue shortfalls. The authors present a political budget matrix designed to assist budget policymakers and staff in making educated assumptions about the way categories of programs may be treated during times of …

A Case Study Of The Base-Closure Community Initial Redevelopment Process, Stephen R. Cliatt, Gregory A. Stanley Sep 1994

A Case Study Of The Base-Closure Community Initial Redevelopment Process, Stephen R. Cliatt, Gregory A. Stanley

Theses and Dissertations

In 1990, Public Law 101-510 created the independent, five-year Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission BRAC. This law provided for the Commission to meet in 1991, 1993, and 1995. The 1993 Commission recommended transfer of the Defense Electronic Supply Center DESC, a Defense Logistics Agency inventory control point, to Columbus, Ohio. This action resulted in an Air Force decision to close Gentile AFS, Kettering, Ohio. A case study of the closure and initial redevelopment of Gentile AFS was undertaken to construct a framework to be used by future redevelopment policy makers affected by a defense base closure. This framework covers …

An Analysis Of The Behavior Of The Risk Premium In The German Deutschemark Forward Market: A Comparison Of Pre- And Post-German Reunification Of 1990 Exchange Rates, Paul Newton Aug 1994

An Analysis Of The Behavior Of The Risk Premium In The German Deutschemark Forward Market: A Comparison Of Pre- And Post-German Reunification Of 1990 Exchange Rates, Paul Newton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The German reunification of 1990 and the methods of economic integration exerted considerable pressure on both the German economy and the deutschemark. This thesis addresses the issue that the reunification undermined the stability of the deutschemark, detectable through a change in the implied risk premium. Emphasis is placed on the forward deutschemark in the context of interest rate parity in order to detect a change in the implied risk premium. By using three month U.S. and German bank Certificate of Deposit rates as the basis for the IRP calculations, a considerable shift in this implied risk premium was detected and …

Current therapy can induce a long-term remission in half the patients with diffuse lymphomas with a large-cell component (DLLC), but more intensive treatment has the potential to improve outcome. Rearrangement of a novel candidate proto-oncogene, bcl-6, correlates with a favorable clinical outcome in DLLC and may thus serve as a prognostic marker.
