Health Insurance And The Rise Of Women: Evidence From The New Cooperative Medical Scheme, Xingyu Bai

Females are traditionally viewed as the primary providers of informal parental care in China, especially in rural areas. We investigate whether health insurance coverage in rural China, the New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS), can unleash more female labor force participation by reducing the burden of informal parental care. Employing a heterogeneity-robust difference-in-differences estimation, we find that the NCMS has a significant positive impact on female labor supply, primarily in non-farm occupations. In contrast, we observe no significant changes in male labor supply. We explore the mechanism by showing that the NCMS significantly decreases both the provision and demand for parental …

Advancements in engineering and transportation technology have integrated commuting into modern living. Most studies on transportation infrastructure, such as roads and railways, focus on economic outcomes. This paper examines an overlooked outcome of transportation connectivity: access to medical care. We study the role transportation networks play in determining patients’ treatment location choices. Specifically, we aim to study 1) why patients travel to begin with, 2) how do patients choose where to go for treatment, and 3) how travel times can affect patients’ travel decisions. Reading The Candlesticks: An Ok Estimator For Volatility, Jia Li, Dishen Wang, Qiushi Zhang

We propose an Optimal candlesticK (OK) estimator for the spot volatility using high-frequency candlestick observations. Under a standard infill asymptotic setting, we show that the OK estimator is asymptotically unbiased and has minimal asymptotic variance within a class of linear estimators. Its estimation error can be coupled by a Brownian functional, which permits valid inference. Our theoretical and numerical results suggest that the proposed candlestick-based estimator is much more accurate than the conventional spot volatility estimator based on high-frequency returns. An empirical illustration documents the intraday volatility dynamics of various assets during the Fed chairman's recent congressional testimony.

Two Essays On Asset Prices Around Securities Class Action Lawsuits, Sounak Saha
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Essay 1: Prior studies on securities class action lawsuits have found that there are large negative abnormal returns and an increase in short-selling activity in the days preceding the lawsuit filing. These findings have largely been attributed to anticipatory inference and private information. However, our analysis of a large sample spanning 2009-2019 reveals that more than half of the lawsuits had a public announcement about the law firm investigation in the days leading up to the lawsuit filing. Strikingly, we find that the average cumulative abnormal return during the 10-day pre-filing period was: (1) over -17% for lawsuits with a …

Indonesia finds tax amnesty as a reliable funding alternative to develop a sustainable economy. Since 1964, Indonesia has implemented five tax amnesty programs. The latest two programs would offer lower amnesty compensation rates if taxpayers repatriated offshore assets back to Indonesia. However, the tax amnesty repatriation policy merely contributed minimal amounts of repatriated assets and low number of participants. Consequently, it failed to raise sufficient liquidity, fiscal revenues, tax compliance and economic growth. Hospitals receive payments through claim submissions with complete documents to the Social Security Administering Agency (BPJS) Health. However, not all inpatient claims have been submitted to BPJS Health, and there are still 16.97% pending inpatient claims. In claims that are not approved, claims can be resubmitted, but time constraints for the claim process have resulted in 2.64% of inpatient cases in 2022 not resubmitted. Qualitative research through in-depth interviews with 15 respondents aims to analyze the management of inpatient claims for BPJS Kesehatan Kebayoran Baru Hospital from November 2022 to April 2023. Length of stay (LOS) can increase hospital rates and become a cost issue for patients, potentially resulting in a discrepancy between hospital rates and INA-CBGs rates at the hospital. This study aims to determine the difference between the actual costs and BPJS claim costs for diabetic patients based on the length of stay and class level. The research method is observational with a descriptive approach. The data collection technique used retrospective medical record data from 50 patients. The temporary operating room rates were set by adapting the rates of other regional hospitals and the Governor of DKI Jakarta's regulations. The government addresses stunting through specific nutritional interventions targeting direct causes and sensitive nutritional interventions for indirect causes. Household spending on healthcare, or out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, in Indonesia, remains far above the ideal limit set by the WHO. There is a noticeable disparity in OOP health expenditures across provinces in Indonesia. The five provinces with the highest per capita OOP expenses are on Java island. This study evaluates the economic implications of TB incidence on gross domestic product (GDP) growth across eight ASEAN countries from 2000 to 2020. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative with a field study approach. The data used came from interviews and literature studies. Since the Supreme Court declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 unconstitutional in 2018, 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized face to face and/or on-line betting on sports. A potential unintended consequence of legalized sports betting is an increased risk for mental health disorders and problem gambling. Using a staggered difference-in differences framework, we exploit variation in timing of adoption of legal sports betting across states to evaluate the impact of these laws on mental health outcomes. Fines and fees are commonplace in the United States criminal justice system as a form of punishment for both minor and severe offenses. While substantial research has demonstrated that these financial consequences disproportionately affect certain communities, studies that depict a narrative of these impacts are vastly underrepresented in the field. This project expands upon past literature by delving into the effects of these practices on individuals and their families. The current study outlines the findings from a content analysis of twelve semi-structured interviews on the impacts of fines and fees in Oregon. The findings create a deeper understanding of how …
