A Stochastic Model Of Wildfire Ignitions And Damages, John Heineke, Stein Weissenberger Jan 1969

A Stochastic Model Of Wildfire Ignitions And Damages, John Heineke, Stein Weissenberger

Economics

A model of the production of wildfire ignitions and damages is developed and used to determine wildland activity-regulation decisions which minimize total expected cost-plus-loss due to wildfires. In this context, the implications of various policy decisions are considered. The resulting decision rules take a form which makes it possible for existing wildfire management agencies to readily adopt them upon collection of the required data.

Assessing Achievement On A First-Grade Economics Course Of Study, A. Guy Larkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Problem

Despite the surge of interest in economic education in the elementary school in the last two decades, there have been very few attempts to assess the ability of young children to learn economic concepts. In the primary grades, this problem is compounded by the difficulty of measuring knowledge in six and seven year old children.

Objectives

The primary objective of this dissertation was to determine whether first-grade children can learn the basic concepts in Our Working World: Families at Work. Since instruments suitable for assessing achievement on Families at Work were not available when this study was initiated, …

Optimal Insurance Coverage, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1968

Optimal Insurance Coverage, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

There is limited treatment of the optimal protection of assets against casualty or liability loss. The problem of optimal insurance coverage is formally similar to the problem of optimal inventory stockage under uncertainty. If casualty or liability loss (demand) is less than the insurance coverage (inventory level), excessive insurance cost (inventory holding cost) is incurred. If casualty or liability loss (demand) is greater than the insurance coverage (inventory level), one must absorb the cost of the unrecoverable loss (sales loss). These two components of loss must be balanced in determining optimal insurance (inventory) levels.

Socio-Political Factors Affecting The Growth Of The Mormon Church In Argentina Since 1925, Michael B. Smurthwaite Jan 1968

Socio-Political Factors Affecting The Growth Of The Mormon Church In Argentina Since 1925, Michael B. Smurthwaite

Theses and Dissertations

Since 1925 Mormon missionaries have proselyted in Catholic Argentina. Yet the Argentine mission has grown very slowly and encountered many difficulties. Did the missionaries' North American image affect the missionary work? Did the predominance of the Catholic Church stunt the growth of the new sect? How did the impact of bitter U.S.-Argentine international relations during the Second World War, and the advent of Peron affect the reception of Mormonism in Argentina?

These questions concerning the history of the Mormon Church in Argentina since 1940 can best be understood by considering the episodes of Argentine history which bear directly on the …

Spanish Land Grant Problems Were Here _July 1967, Wayne S. Scott Jul 1967

Spanish Land Grant Problems Were Here _July 1967, Wayne S. Scott

BBER Publications

The article was published as a response to contemporary debates over land-grant rights and the claims advanced by the Alianza Federal de Mercedes during the 1960s. It argues that many land-grant disputes predated U.S. control of New Mexico and originated in Spanish colonial legal practices, administrative irregularities, inheritance customs, and economic conditions rather than solely from actions taken by Anglo-Americans after 1846.

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool May 1967

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative share of natural rubber in the world's total rubber consumption had been decreasing from 75 percent in 1948- 1949 to 44.4 percent in 1965. Since the production of natural rubber has been rising over the same period, some predictions have been made indicating that there will be a surplus of production over consumption of natural rubber in the near future.

In the world output of natural rubber industry, Thailand ranks third, being surpassed only by Malaysia and Indonesia. Of all the exports of Thailand, rubber ranks second in value and is exceeded only by rice. Almost all of …

Description And Evaluation Of Institutions Involved In Water Allocation And Distribution In Utah, Kimber C. Webb May 1967

Description And Evaluation Of Institutions Involved In Water Allocation And Distribution In Utah, Kimber C. Webb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water development and allocation have been among the most important problems Utah has had to face throughout the past 117 years of development . When Utah's first white settlers, the Mormon pioneers, entered Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, little met their eyes to entice their stay. The earth was so parched and dry that they were unable to scratch the surface with their plows. Less than two hours after their arrival members of the party began digging ditches and building dams to irrigate and soften the earth so they could begin plowing.

Some Aspects Of Agricultural Trade In Respect To Economic Development Of Thailand, Prasert Wongbhan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The expansion of international trade, according to the traditional trade theory, can be the escape passage from economic stagnation. Furthermore, it will result in specialization within a country and increasing efficiency of production and real income.

The concept and measurement of economic growth are explored. Also the importance of international trade for a small nation is studied. The author traced the structure and trends of world trade, which are contributed to economic growth in the past. Then studied the structure and pattern of international trade of Thailand.

The growth in Thailand's participation in world trade is significant, but the rate …

Non-Economic Objectives And The Efficiency Properties Of Trade, Jagdish N. Bhagwati Jan 1967

Non-Economic Objectives And The Efficiency Properties Of Trade, Jagdish N. Bhagwati

Faculty Scholarship

It is well known (Kemp, 1962; Samuelson, 1962; Bhagwati, forthcoming) that, for a country with no monopoly power in trade (or domestic distortions), free trade (in the sense of a policy resulting in the equalization of domestic and foreign prices and hence excluding trade, production and consumption taxes, subsidies, and quantitative restrictions) is the optimal policy. It follows, therefore, that free trade is superior to no trade.

It has also been argued recently (Kemp, 1962), that, even in the case where there is monopoly power in trade, so that both no trade and free trade are suboptimal policies, it is …

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson May 1966

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research and development (R&D) play an increasingly important role in the economy of the United States. Total expenditures for R&D during the decade of the 1950's were greater than in the entire history of the United States previous to that time. As a percent of gross national product, R&D has grown from 0.2 percent in 1921, to 0.4 to 0.6 percent in the 1930's and 1940's, and is now more than 3 percent.1

Much has been said of the impact that the growth of R&D has on the general economy. R&D had also had a significant economic and sociocultural …
