The Neo-Classical Contributions To The Theory Of International Trade, Mohammed Arifeen Jun 1970

The Neo-Classical Contributions To The Theory Of International Trade, Mohammed Arifeen

Economics Theses & Dissertations

In a dynamic economy some of the most challenging policy problems tend to originate in the realm of international economic relations. In the post World War II period, these problems have been intensified and become more complex. Students of international economics often feel perplexed by numerous divergent and diametric views that well-trained and prudent men frequently offer for the solutions of what appear to be rather simple problems. Lack of understanding of the theoretical framework of international trade is largely responsible for students' puzzlement.

It is the purpose of this thesis to assemble a minimum framework of the theoretical issues …

An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle May 1970

An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic effects, to the Utah range-sheep operation and to the economy of the state of Utah, of predation upon sheep were studied by use of a personal interview survey. This survey sampled 20 percent of the range-sheep operations in Utah.

The sheep and lamb death loss from predation was found to be 61.0 sheep and lambs per 1,000 head of ewes in fiscal 1969. The survey. also showed that 71.36 percent of the losses were lambs and 28.64 percent were ewes.

The total economic loss to Utah sheep ranchers was calculated to be 1,062,502 dollars as a result of …

Attitudes Of Selected College Professors And College Students In Utah Toward Labor Unions, Dwain Dee Stephenson May 1970

Attitudes Of Selected College Professors And College Students In Utah Toward Labor Unions, Dwain Dee Stephenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The attitudes of selected university professors and students in Utah toward labor unions were obtained through the medium of a questionnaire.

Most students and professors favored anti-trust laws for unions, were against the abolishment of the right-to-work law, and were evenly divided in their feelings concerning the settlement of strikes by compulsory arbitration.

A majority of students and professors were against an increase in overtime pay and a shorter work week. Students favored and professors opposed a raise in the minimum wage.

Professors and students anticipated growth in union membership as a percentage of the labor force.

Except for professors …

Differential Tariffs, Negative Value-Added And The Theory Of Effective Protection, Augustine H. H. Tan Mar 1970

Differential Tariffs, Negative Value-Added And The Theory Of Effective Protection, Augustine H. H. Tan

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article examines the implications for effective protection(EP) theory of allowing variable factor proportions and general equilibrium repercussions. The first claim of EP theory, is that it provides a measure of the maximum proportionate increase in factor rewards permitted by a tariff structure, as compared to a free trade regime. EP rates predict only a particular direction of resource flows whereas general equilibrium analysis, with variable input coefficients, indicates that flows contrary to EP prediction are possible. Two examples are provided, first, where there is a uniform tariff on final goods; and second, where one final sector has a higher …

Adjustment Costs And The Flexible Accelerator, George A. Hay Feb 1970

Adjustment Costs And The Flexible Accelerator, George A. Hay

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The flexible accelerator concept has provided the rationale for the regression equations used in several recent econometric studies of inventory behavior. In such a model a desired (or equilibrium) level of inventories is defined, but because of costs involved in changing the level of stocks only a partial adjustment of inventories to their desired level is achieved in any time period. This leads to the familiar decision rule in which current inventory is a linear function of the previous period's stock plus a variable or set of variables representing current demand.

The purpose of this note is to question whether …

Recommendations For Management Of Flocks During Joining, K P. Croker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE age or experience of the ram, the number of ewes it has to serve and the management of the ram and ewe flock at mating time all influence the lamb-marking percentage.

These are the findings of a systematic research programme conducted over the period 1963 to 1955 by Dr. R. J. Lightfoot,* in collaboration with Mr. J. A. C. Smithf (1966) and continued by the author in the years 1967 to 1969.

The Systematic Bias Effects Of Incomplete Responses In Rotation Samples, William (Bill) H. Williams Jan 1970

The Systematic Bias Effects Of Incomplete Responses In Rotation Samples, William (Bill) H. Williams

Publications and Research

Rotation samples are frequently used in continuing surveys in order to obtain estimates of changes in a characteristic over time as well as separate estimates of the characteristic at specific points in time. Rotation designs involve the retention of some sampling units and the replacement of others. It has been observed in some studies that there are systematic changes in the estimate of a characteristic, depending on the frequency of appearance of a rotation group in the sample. It is shown in this paper that these systematic changes must occur provided (1) the probability of a selected unit actually appearing …

Dynamic Models Of Economic Development And International Capital Movements, Kiyoshi Abe Jan 1970

Dynamic Models Of Economic Development And International Capital Movements, Kiyoshi Abe

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

There has been a growing awareness that the traditional theory of international capital movements is static and must be reformulated by including dynamic elements that are common in the actual world. This awareness has long since occupied the mind of the present author whose study covers not only the so-called ‘classical’ theory of J.S. Mill, F.W. Taussig, F.G. Graham, et al, and the ‘modern’ theory of B. Ohlin, G. Harberler, R.F. Harrod, et al, in the field of international economics, but also the postwar development of the theory of economic growth initiated by R.F. Harrod and E.D. Domar. The lack …

The Economics Of Transition In Farming, G D. Oliver

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

UNSTABLE income is a constant farm hazard. In addition to uncertainties like over production, obsolescence, rising costs and changes in consumer tastes which menace manufacturing industries, the farmer also has to contend with yield fluctuations arising from climatic conditions over which he has no control.

Domestic Distortions, Tariffs, And The Theory Of Optimum Subsidy: Some Further Results, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, V.K. Ramaswami, T.N. Srinivasan Jan 1969

Domestic Distortions, Tariffs, And The Theory Of Optimum Subsidy: Some Further Results, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, V.K. Ramaswami, T.N. Srinivasan

Faculty Scholarship

Bhagwati and Ramaswami (1963) showed that if there is a distortion, the Paretian first-best policy is to intervene with a tax (subsidy) at the point at which the distortion occurs. Hence a domestic tax-cum-subsidy with respect to production would be first-best optimal when there was a domestic distortion (defined as the divergence between domestic prices and the marginal rate of transformation in domestic production) just as a tariff policy would be first-best optimal under monopoly power in trade (which involves a foreign distortion). An important corollary, for the case of a distortionary wage differential, is that while a tax-cum-subsidy policy …

Taxes And Share Valuation In Competitive Markets, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1969

Taxes And Share Valuation In Competitive Markets, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper extends the fundamental theorem of share (or capital) valuation under conditions of certainty and purely competitive markets, to allow for the distinction between capital gains and income in the taxation of personal income. The objective is to develop the theorem for the tax case in a form general enough to allow for corporations both currently and not currently paying a dividend. However, the general derivation is sufficiently tedious to warrant a presentation which begins with less general cases. Accordingly, we will first develop the share valuation equation for a continuous discount version of the taxless case for corporations …

On Models Of Commercial Fishing, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1969

On Models Of Commercial Fishing, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Commercial fishing is characterized by three key economic and technological features that are relevant to the formulation of an economic theory of fish production. 1. A fishery resource, although conceivably exhaustible, is replenishable; that is, it is subject to laws of natural growth which define an environmental biotechnological constraint on the activities of the fishing industry. 2. The resource and the activity of production from it form a stock-flow relationship. The new growth in the population fish mass depends upon the harvest rate relative to natural recruitment to the stock. If the harvest rate exceeds the recruitment rate, the stock …

Contributions To Indian Economic Analysis: A Survey, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Sukhamoy Chakravarty Jan 1969

Contributions To Indian Economic Analysis: A Survey, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Sukhamoy Chakravarty

Faculty Scholarship

Any survey of contributions to economic analysis in India, even though confined to the post-war years and to issues arising from domestic economic events and policy, runs into exceptional difficulties. Not only has practically every conceivable problem been raised and discussed by economists, in a country where interest in economic issues dates back at least to the latter half of the 19th century; but there have also been numerous committees and commissions whose report have led to a voluminous literature.

Ruthless selectivity has thus been inevitable. We have generally focussed, in this survey, on contributions which meet the following criteria: …
