Price Gouging In A Pandemic, Christopher Buccafusco, Daniel Hemel, Eric L. Talley
Price Gouging In A Pandemic, Christopher Buccafusco, Daniel Hemel, Eric L. Talley
Faculty Scholarship
The COVID-19 pandemic led to acute supply shortages across the country as well as concerns over price increases amid surging demand. In the process, it reawakened a debate about whether and how to regulate “price gouging” — a controversy that continues as inflation has accelerated even as the pandemic abates. Animating this debate is a longstanding conflict between laissez-faire economics, which champions price fluctuations as a means to allocate scarce goods, and perceived norms of consumer fairness, which are thought to cut strongly against sharp price hikes amid shortages.
This Article provides a new, empirically grounded perspective on the price …
Beyond The Labor Exemption: Labor's Antimonopoly Vision And The Fight For Greater Democracy, Kate Andrias
Beyond The Labor Exemption: Labor's Antimonopoly Vision And The Fight For Greater Democracy, Kate Andrias
Faculty Scholarship
Although the labor movement and the antimonopoly movement both oppose concentrated economic power and bemoan rising inequality, their projects are frequently viewed as divergent, if not incompatible. According to the conventional account, the labor movement has historically lacked an affirmative antimonopoly agenda, instead focusing its demands on achieving a labor exemption to the antitrust laws. This chapter shows, however, that left-leaning industrial unions from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century repeatedly and insistently used the language of antimonopoly to argue that private concentrations of economic power posed a grave threat to workers and to democracy. But labor’s vision …

Effects Of Social Activities On Labor Participation Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults In China, Shixun Yuan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper empirically explores how social activities affect the labor force participation of middle-aged and older adults using data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Based on 2SLS and IV-probit regression analyses, where social participation is endogenized, there are three key discoveries. First, social activity is negatively associated with labor force involvement and, when instrumental variables are used to minimize endogeneity bias, the negative effect of social participation is found to be stronger. Second, helping others is the only form of social participation that is positively related to labor participation. Finally, the effect of social engagement …

Determinants Of Vitamin And Mineral Supplement Purchases Among Generation Z, Phakorn Sirisathaworn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the determinants of Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Purchases among Generation Z, focusing on age and income as key factors. A sample of 385 respondents aged 16-27 completed an 18-question survey, categorized by income levels (< 20,000 THB, 20,000 - 40,000 THB, 40,000 - 60,000 THB, 60,000 - 80,000 THB, and above 80,000 THB) for comprehensive analysis. Younger respondents, particularly those aged 16-18, predominantly belong to lower income brackets, reflecting early career or student statuses. Income levels increase with age, peaking among 25-27 year-olds, indicating greater economic capability. Consumption patterns closely align with income, where higher income groups exhibit higher supplement usage. Primary barriers for lower income groups include safety concerns and affordability, while motivations across all income brackets center on health improvement and immune support. Economic disparities influence purchasing behaviors, with lower income groups buying smaller quantities more frequently and higher income groups opting for bulk purchases less often. Preferences for organic ingredients and trusted brands are notable among higher income segments. The study underscores the economic sensitivity of lower income consumers to price changes and the resilience of higher income groups to economic fluctuations. These findings emphasize the role of income in shaping supplement consumption behaviors and suggest implications for targeted marketing and public health initiatives aimed at Generation Z.

Low school attendance remains an important challenge in resource-poor settings with cash and information constraints. We compare conditional cash transfer (CCT) treatments with framing variations (gain and loss) against attendance information treatment as interventions to address these constraints in a unified framework. Our randomized evaluation shows CCT treatments increase attendance by 11 percentage points, about half of which is attributable to attendance information. These treatments improve girls’ academic aspirations and reduce early marriage. Daily CCT set at a quarter of local child wage maximizes attendance impact. We highlight the importance of low-cost information technology to boost attendance sustainably and cost-effectively.

Retail Pharmacies And Drug Diversion During The Opioid Epidemic, Aljoscha Janssen, Xuan Zhang

This study investigates the role of retail pharmacy ownership in the opioid epidemic. Using data of prescription opioid orders, we show that compared with chain pharmacies, independent pharmacies dispense 39.1% more opioids and 60.5% more OxyContin. After an independent pharmacy becomes a chain pharmacy, opioid dispensing decreases. Using the OxyContin reformulation, which reduced non-medical demand but not the legitimate medical demand, we show that at least a third of the difference in the amount of OxyContin dispensed can be attributed to non-medical demand. We show that differences in competitive pressure and whether pharmacists own the pharmacy drive our estimates.

We construct a monthly presidential economic approval rating (PEAR) index from 1981 to 2019, by averaging ratings on the president’s handling of the economy across various national polls. In the cross-section, stocks with high betas to changes in the PEAR index significantly under-perform those with low betas by 1.00% per month in the future, on a risk-adjusted basis. The low PEAR beta premium persists up to one year, and is present in various sub-samples and even in other G7 countries. PEAR beta dynamically reveals a firm’s perceived alignment to the incumbent president’s economic policies and investors seem to misprice such …
Biophysical Measures To Support Analysis And Communication Of Existence Values, James Boyd, Robert Johnston, Paul Ringold
Biophysical Measures To Support Analysis And Communication Of Existence Values, James Boyd, Robert Johnston, Paul Ringold
Economics
A recent focus of ecosystem services research has been on the definition of biophysical outcomes and measures most closely linked to social welfare. There is a particular need to identify biophysical outcomes corresponding to existence values. (Values associated with existence apart from any current or future use.) We review economic and ecological evidence to answer two key questions: First, what are ideal characteristics of linking indicators for existence values? Linking indicators should be: understandable, subject to direct sensory perception, represented at relevant temporal and spatial scales, comprehensive, and quantifiable in a repeatable manner. Second, what types of ecosystem outcomes are …
Permutation-Based Tests For Discontinuities In Event Studies, Federico Bugni, Jia Li, Qiyuan Li

We propose using a permutation test to detect discontinuities in an underlying economic model at a cutoff point. Relative to the existing literature, we show that this test is well suited for event studies based on time-series data. The test statistic measures the distance between the empirical distribution functions of observed data in two local subsamples on the two sides of the cutoff. Critical values are computed via a standard permutation algorithm. Under a high-level condition that the observed data can be coupled by a collection of conditionally independent variables, we establish the asymptotic validity of the permutation test, allowing …

Time Allocation Pattern For Household And Expenditure Saving Market Activities By Using Economic Value Of Time: A Gender-Based Analysis In Pakistan, Hamna Nasir, Ambreen Fatima, Gulrukh Zahid
Business Review
The objective of this study is to estimate the opportunity cost of time spent on household work and expenditure saving market work performed by individuals by taking into account their personal and socio-demographic characteristics. Data is gathered from Labour Force Survey of Pakistan for different years. Pseudo panel technique is used by making cohorts of household and expenditure saving market activities, region and province. Increase in the opportunity cost of time increases female household work hours and expenditure saving market hours by 6.2 and 7.001 hours/week respectively, whereas increase in the opportunity cost of time increases male household hours and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tourism has continually been presented as a growing economic sector around the world. Having become an area of increased interest for diversifying rural economies, tourism is an attractive alternative to the declining traditional economic engines of rural communities like agriculture, forestry, and mining. Rural destinations have become increasingly attractive to outside visitors who seek to pursue activities embedded within the local culture and distinctive attractive assets available in rural regions. The USDA has recognized the increasing importance of recreation and tourism economies as an emerging or priority area of national need and an effective means for rural development. Even with …

My dissertation analyzes several contemporary policy-based and institutional occurrences in an urban setting to help guide further advancements in reducing violence, drug overdose deaths, and other unhealthy behaviors that city governments look to curb. Several recent developments in Philadelphia offer a promising setting for studying policies that have broad implications.
Chapter 1 examines the effect of the West Philadelphia Promise Zone initiative on violent crime rates in a high-crime area of West Philadelphia, where a series of educational, public-safety, and quality-of-life improvement grants were disbursed from 2014 onward. My difference-in-differences analysis with two-way fixed effects and cluster bootstrapped standard errors …
