Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma
Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States needs migrant workers to fill the labor market gap because baby boomers are retiring from the US workforce in large numbers beginning in 2020. Approximately 2.1 million migrants came from Africa to fill the U.S. labor shortage. Many of these African migrants faced challenges with English language proficiency. There are benefits to the United States involved with increasing the economic wellbeing of migrants, such as reducing remigration, increasing the high-skilled labor force, and increasing cultural diversity. This study used Maslow’s motivational theory to test significant relationships between perceptions of English language proficiency (PELP) and economic life satisfaction …
Gender-Based Pay Inequality In The Canadian Insurance Companies, Mostafa Shayangogani
Gender-Based Pay Inequality In The Canadian Insurance Companies, Mostafa Shayangogani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe problem in this study was gender-based pay inequality among women at Canadian insurance companies. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand gender-based pay inequality for women at Canadian insurance companies. Aigner's, Cain's, Arrow's, and Phelps' statistical discrimination theory guided the study. The theoretical foundation also included the human capital theory by Becker and Schultz. The research questions focused on understanding C-suite and V-level executives’ lived experiences of gender-based pay inequality and identifying effective strategies that should be adopted to overcome the problem at Canadian insurance companies. This study used purposeful sampling to recruit 15 C-suite and …
Chinese Yuan Interest Rate Swap Yields, Tanweer Akram, Khawaja Mamun
Chinese Yuan Interest Rate Swap Yields, Tanweer Akram, Khawaja Mamun
WCBT Faculty Publications
This paper models the dynamics of Chinese yuan–denominated long-term interest rate swap yields. It shows that the short-term interest rate exerts a decisive influence on the long-term swap yield after controlling for various macrofinancial variables, such as core inflation, the growth of industrial production, the percent change in the equity price index, and the percentage change in the Chinese yuan exchange rate. The autoregressive distributed lag approach is applied to model the dynamics of the long-term swap yield. The findings reinforce and extend John Maynard Keynes’s conjecture that in advanced countries, as well as emerging market economies such as China, …
Incumbent Competition And Private Agenda, Anne Marie Go
Incumbent Competition And Private Agenda, Anne Marie Go
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Consider two politicians who decide whether to follow what they believe the electorate wants or choose the option that secures their private gain. Policies are implemented when the politicians reach a unanimous decision. The electorate only rewards a politician when a policy is implemented or when the politician is the only one whose action coincides with the popular decision. The results show that if politicians have good decision-making abilities, sufficiently high payoffs in policy implementation—given moderate private agenda payoffs—push them to implement the popular policy. For very poor decision- making abilities, at sufficiently high policy rewards, politicians vote for the …
Income Recovery Of Thai Workers From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Amornrat Apinunmahakul
Income Recovery Of Thai Workers From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Amornrat Apinunmahakul
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper examines how COVID-19 and the resultant lockdown affected Thai workers and how their income has recovered as of the end of 2020. We conducted three phases of telephone surveys to track the income dynamics of Thai workers during the months of May, August, and November 2020. The initial COVID-19 impact on Thai worker income was enormous and very broad. On average, Thai workers’ income fell by 47.03%, and 69.7% suffered such a loss. Over the six months survey period, most Thai workers had just begun to stabilize their income, but only a few were actually able to recover. …
Explicating The Influence Of Religion In Forming Corporate Governance: Insights From The Philippines, Leveric Tan Ng, John Paolo Rivera
Explicating The Influence Of Religion In Forming Corporate Governance: Insights From The Philippines, Leveric Tan Ng, John Paolo Rivera
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Religion plays a role in shaping personal values and directing an organization’s moral filter. It is an avenue to impose social morality that may impact corporate governance. We examined the influence of religion in the formation and development of good corporate governance through ethical leadership in the Philippines – a country that has strong religious culture. In validating scholarly literature on religion and enterprise, we looked into the conception and interpretation of religion and corporate governance through a key informant interview of 30 executive directors from private corporations in the country. We found that corporate governance may arise from religious …
The Role Of Public Investment In Pandemic Recovery, Aris Zoleta
The Role Of Public Investment In Pandemic Recovery, Aris Zoleta
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The goal of this study is to review the risk associated with increases in sovereign deficits and the role of public investment in pandemic recovery. The estimates of DSGE models show that fiscal authority provides more emphasis on debt to GDP than output and deficits. In addition, the stochastic simulation shows that increases in public investment do not limit the increases in private investment. And both public and private investment exhibit procyclical behaviors in the presence of government spending shock. Lastly, the output is more persistent during episodes of technology shocks than during an increase in government spending. The paper …
Inequality, Oligarchy, And Dynasty, Ronald U. Mendoza
Inequality, Oligarchy, And Dynasty, Ronald U. Mendoza
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Although some scholars frame inequality as a necessary step towards economic growth, this paper highlights its double- edged nature by examining oligarchy and dynasty as elements of inequality in the Philippine context. The best way to
ascertain whether inequality can be advantageous for development is to examine how it shapes the context that it works in. The presence of political dynasties is then evaluated based on their impact on patterns of leadership in the country, whereas business oligarchs are assessed by their influence over the structure of the economy. The paper concludes with a three-point agenda to address the root …

Subjective Well-Being And Intergenerational Mobility In South Africa, Alison J. Monroe
Subjective Well-Being And Intergenerational Mobility In South Africa, Alison J. Monroe
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Using data on individuals from the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS), this paper analyzes the relationship between intergenerational mobility and subjective well-being for two cohorts of South Africans. Subjective well-being has been measured using a multitude of factors, but the impact of changing economic mobility on reported life satisfaction has been less explored in the context of South Africa. Education and social mobility are the two mobility variables used to understand how changes in economic status relative to one’s parents affect self-reported well-being. This paper utilizes three methods of regression analysis for comparisons: cross-sectional, pooled cross-sectional, and panel (fixed effects …

Examining Neighborhood-Level Hot And Cold Spots Of Food Insecurity In Relation To Social Vulnerability In Houston, Texas, Ryan Ramphul, Linda Highfield, Shreela Sharma
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Food insecurity is prevalent and associated with poor health outcomes, but little is known about its geographical nature. The aim of this study is to utilize geospatial modeling of individual-level food insecurity screening data ascertained in health care settings to test for neighborhood hot and cold spots of food insecurity in a large metropolitan area, and then compare these hot spot neighborhoods to cold spot neighborhoods in terms of the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index. In this cross-sectional secondary data analysis, we geocoded the home addresses of 6,749 unique participants screened for food insecurity at health care locations participating in CMS's …

Dynamic Connectedness In The Asean’S Equity Markets During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Yuthana Sethapramote, Suthawan Prukumpai, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed shocks that triggered severe global economic contraction and spawned sizeable financial market fluctuations. This paper examines the dynamic connectedness between ASEAN stock markets and major global stock markets using the dynamic connectedness framework developed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2009, 2012). Empirical results reveal that ASEAN stock markets and other emerging markets have experienced higher spillovers from global equity markets during the pandemic than in normal times. In addition, the role of ASEAN region spillovers has increased significantly during the COVID-19 outbreak. This study contributes to the existing literature by investigating the extent of dynamic connectedness between …

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
Large companies have the financial power to play a price strategy so it can threaten the existence of small companies. In this case, the government implements a minimum price policy to protect small entrepreneurs from unfair price competition. This paper aims to determine the correlation between implementing the minimum price policy and the price strategy in the cigarette industry. Using panel data of DJBC market transaction price survey for 2015-2019 period covering 199 cigarette brands in 25 Indonesian provinces and random effect model, the study found that the implementation of the minimum price policy (HTP 85%) is significantly correlated with …
Enhanced Maximum Likelihood Models For Underreported Variables: Extending To Multiple Claims Dimension, Shalaka Sudhanshu Sarpotdar
Enhanced Maximum Likelihood Models For Underreported Variables: Extending To Multiple Claims Dimension, Shalaka Sudhanshu Sarpotdar
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis builds upon the foundations laid out in Xia et al. [2023], which explored the utilizationof Maximum Likelihood approach to model misrepresentation data in Generalized Linear Models (GLM) ratemaking models. We introduce the concept of “underreported variables”, a form of insurance misrepresentation where insured individuals provide inaccurate information about risk factors that influence insurance eligibility, premiums, and insured amounts. Unlike fraudulent misrepresentation, underreported variables arise from a lack of awareness regarding the insured’s mental and physical health conditions, rather than fraudulent intent. The study rigorously tests the proposed model using health insurance data and extends its applicability to other …
Essays On Parental Migration In China And Performance Of Two Asset Pricing Models, Yuqing Song
Essays On Parental Migration In China And Performance Of Two Asset Pricing Models, Yuqing Song
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation comprises two research strands. The first strand investigates the migration choices of parents in rural China and their specific impact on children's educational outcomes. The second strand delves into the realm of financial econometrics, focusing solely on the performance of two asset pricing models on days scheduled for important macroeconomic news announcements.
The first essay places emphasis on the migration decisions of two-parent households with school-aged children. The findings affirm the hypothesis that household characteristics, rather than each parent’s personal traits, play an important role in determining parents’ migration choices.
The second essay examines the short-run effects of …

Three Essays On The Effects Of Parental Income And Labor Supply On Child Health And Labor Market Outcomes., Kassahun Mamo Geleta
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation constitutes three separate essays on labor and health economics using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) dataset. The first essay examines the long-run effect of childhood poverty on labor market outcomes using propensity score matching (PSM) and average causal mediation effect (ACME) methods. The results show that persistent childhood poverty significantly decreases average annual labor income and hours worked, whereas it increases the number of weeks unemployed per annum during adulthood. The study also shows that a significant portion of the total effect of childhood poverty on labor market outcomes passes indirectly through its negative effect on …
China’S "Greek Gift" To Africa: A Myth Or Reality, Chibuzo Uchechukwu Victor Obasi
China’S "Greek Gift" To Africa: A Myth Or Reality, Chibuzo Uchechukwu Victor Obasi
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Two differing perceptions have dominated explanations of the relationship between China and Africa. The first is often held in the West and sees China as an exploitative force that has latched onto Africa's quest for development partnerships to exploit the continent economically. The second considers the China-Africa partnership more positively and views China as a trustworthy ally. Advocates argue that China has no history of colonial ambitions in Africa. Instead, China intervened in Africa to fill the financing gap and tackle the development challenges in Africa with no political strings attached. Perception of which view is mainly correct depends on …

Young Adult Substance Use Following Involuntary Job Loss, Nicholas A. Jolly, Gwendolyn J. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to study the relationship between job displacement and substance use among young adults. Results show that displacement is associated with increases in the probability of smoking cigarettes and drinking and the intensity of consuming alcohol and marijuana. Men, whites, and those who live with family/friends at the time of displacement are more likely to use hard drugs after job loss. Findings suggest that government policy designed to aid displaced workers should contain provisions to anticipate and respond to substance use disorders that may arise, particularly among younger job losers.
Firm-Level Political Risk And Corporate R&D Investment, Emmanuel Boah
Firm-Level Political Risk And Corporate R&D Investment, Emmanuel Boah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I examine how firms make R&D investment decisions during periods of political uncertainty. To minimize stickiness and overly generalized assumptions, I employ quarterly data. I find that firms invest more in R&D when facing high levels of political risk. The results suggest that this positive relationship between political risk and R&D investment is more pronounced for competitive and politically sensitive firms. Additionally, the positive association is evident among firms with higher growth opportunities and more liquid assets. The results are robust to the test for correlation, addressing endogeneity, and alternative proxies adopted for the variables of interest. Overall, the findings …

Logistics Leader Strategies For Retaining Employees, Sandra Northern
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low employee retention can lead to a lack of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for sustainable logistics operations. Logistics leaders are concerned with employee retention because turnover increases business costs, reduces operational efficiency, and decreases profitability. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies logistics leaders use to increase employee retention. The participants were three senior leaders from a logistics organization in the northeast region of the United States who possessed knowledge and experience of the research phenomena. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, company documents, publicly available data, and …

Better Solutions To Increasing Covid-19 Vaccine Access: Giving Away Vaccines Rather Than Vaccine Formulas, Tristen Prouse
Better Solutions To Increasing Covid-19 Vaccine Access: Giving Away Vaccines Rather Than Vaccine Formulas, Tristen Prouse
Honors Program Theses
The debate over giving away the COVID-19 vaccine formulas is a political hot topic. Mention of a Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) waiver proposed in early 2021 suggested violating patent law to give away the vaccine formulas. While a tempting option, many problems exist with this solution. Violating patent law to give away the vaccine formulas disincentivizes innovation, undermines confidence in vaccine safety, and harms America’s geopolitical objectives. Patent law can be inefficient and is not the only way to incentivize innovation, but it is here to stay. Instead, the United States should give away vaccines rather than vaccine formulas …

Unraveling The Hispanic Health Paradox, Jose Fernandez, Monica Garcia-Perez, Sandra Orozco-Aleman
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In 2019, Hispanics in the US had a life expectancy advantage of 3.0 years and 7.1 years over non-Hispanic Whites and non-Hispanic Blacks, respectively, despite having real-household income values 26 percentage points lower than Non-Hispanic White households. Hispanics appear to have equal or even better health outcomes relative to non-Hispanic Whites across various health measures. This is known as the Hispanic health paradox. This paper underscores the importance of disaggregating Hispanics by ancestry and age profile when discussing the paradox across key health outcomes. It also provides an overview of the leading explanations, such as the salmon bias and the …
