Poverty And Poverty Alleviation Policies In The North Central Zone Of Nigeria, Gloria Ese Olotu Dr
Bullion
The paper examined poverty situation in the north central and the poverty alleviation policies of government as they affect the people of the north central zone in particular and Nigeria generally. This study was carried out in the face of the fact that poverty has characterized the Nigerian society such that over 70% of her citizens live below poverty line predicated by hunger, unemployment, poor housing, poor health care and other deprivations in spite of numerous government policies and programs aimed at alleviating or eradicating poverty in Nigeria since independence. Data for the study were generated through both the primary …
Politics And Eminent Domain: Evidence From The 1879 California Constitution, Mark T. Kanazawa
Politics And Eminent Domain: Evidence From The 1879 California Constitution, Mark T. Kanazawa
Department of Economics Working Paper Series
This paper explores the politics of eminent domain, using a specific historical episode: the enactment of the new California constitution in 1879. It presents evidence that the failure of a constitutional provision that would have codified eminent domain powers for water development resulted from a complex interchange of economic interests among farmers, miners, and urban residents. This evidence was manifested in delegate behavior on the floor of the constitutional convention in 1878, including various roll-call votes, which are subjected to an econometric analysis. The results have implications for the interpretation of legislative eminent domain decisions, and the degree to which …

BACKGROUND: Despite international efforts to improve reproductive health indicators, little attention is paid to the contributions of contextual factors to modern contraceptive coverage, especially in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. This study aimed to identify the association between country-level Gender Inequality and Health Expenditure with demand for family planning satisfied by modern contraceptive methods (DFPSm) in Latin American sexually active women.
METHODS: Our analyses included data from the most recent (post-2010) Demographic and Health Survey or Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey from 14 LAC countries. Descriptive analyses and multilevel logistic regressions were performed. Six individual-level factors were included. …
Horse Sense Or Horse Hype? Estimating The True Economic Impact Of Churchill Downs And The Kentucky Derby On The Louisville Metro Area, Thomas E. Lambert
Horse Sense Or Horse Hype? Estimating The True Economic Impact Of Churchill Downs And The Kentucky Derby On The Louisville Metro Area, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In trying to assess the true economic impact of the Kentucky Derby on the Louisville region (north central Kentucky and south central Indiana counties), one can find two different estimates appear in doing a quick search on the internet. Some sources, such as the Kentucky Derby Museum, indicate that the economic impact of the Derby is around $217 million (Kentucky Derby Museum 2023) but never mention a source or study for this conjecture. In doing some research, this amount is determined to come from a 2001 study by the marketing research firm Wilkerson and Associates (LaMarra 2001), and therefore this …

This paper studies the impact of urban density, city government efficiency, and medical resources on COVID-19 infection and death outcomes in China. We adopt a simultaneous spatial dynamic panel data model to account for (i) the simultaneity of infection and death outcomes, (ii) the spatial pattern of the transmission, (iii) the intertemporal dynamics of the disease, and (iv) the unobserved city-specific and time-specific effects. We find that, while population density increases the level of infections, government efficiency significantly mitigates the negative impact of urban density. We also find that the availability of medical resources improves public health outcomes conditional on …

The ability of Poa annua L. to adapt to most turfgrass environments extends to its ability to develop resistance to commonly used herbicides. Herbicide resistant P. annua is of almost epidemic proportions. The loss of once viable chemical-based treatments pushes practitioners towards more expensive, and often less effective, control strategies. This management guide focuses on integrated weed management (IWM) practices for P. annua control and herbicide resistance—what it is and how to overcome it. Also discussed are resistance mechanisms and documentation of common occurrences of field-level resistance within much of the United States. Finally, a summary of some of the …

OBJECTIVES: Safety-net hospitals (SNHs) provide essential services to predominantly underserved patients regardless of their ability to pay. We hypothesized that patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) would have inferior observed outcomes at SNHs compared with non-SNHs but that matched cohorts would have comparable outcomes.
METHODS: We queried the Nationwide Readmissions Database for patients who underwent isolated CABG from 2016 to 2018. We ranked hospitals by the percentage of all admissions in which the patient was uninsured or insured with Medicaid; hospitals in the top quartile were designated as SNHs. We used propensity-score matching to mitigate the effect of …

Policies, Projections, And The Social Cost Of Carbon: Results From The Dice-2023 Model, Lint Barrage, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study examines the assumptions, modeling structure, and preliminary results of DICE-2023, the revised Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy (DICE), updated to 2023. The revision contains major changes in the carbon and climate modules, the treatment of non-industrial greenhouse gases, discount rates, as well as updates on all the major components. The major changes are a significant reduction in the target for the optimal (cost-beneficial) temperature path, a lower cost of reaching the 2 °C target, an analysis of the impact of the Paris Accord, and a major increase in the estimated social cost of carbon.

Biobased energy, particularly corn starch-based ethanol and other liquid renewable fuels, is a major element of federal and state energy policies in the United States. These policies are motivated by energy security and climate change mitigation objectives, but corn ethanol does not substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions when compared to petroleum-based fuels in all production scenarios. Corn production also imposes substantial negative externalities (e.g., nitrogen leaching, higher food prices, water scarcity, and indirect land use change). In this paper, we utilize a partial equilibrium model of corn-soy production and trade to analyze the potential of reduced US demand for corn …

A Review Of Perceived Risk Role In Autonomous Vehicles Acceptance, Ho Jen Sim, Tan Booi Chen, Lau Teck Chai, Nasreen Khan Thandar Oo
International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting
The purpose of this study is to critically review literature pertaining to the theoretical concept of perceived risk and its role in autonomous vehicle (AV) studies. A mapping on the placement of perceived risk to explain its position concerning AV acceptance either as a direct predictor or mediator as well as the number of dimensions used (i.e., single or multi-dimensions) in the context of AV, will be derived based on the critical review. Interestingly, a critical gap was discovered in which very little attention had been paid to the use of perceived risk as the multidimensional constructs that included financial …
An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Malaysia’S Youth Unemployment Rate, Neha Bhubhindar Singh, Yvonne Lee
An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Malaysia’S Youth Unemployment Rate, Neha Bhubhindar Singh, Yvonne Lee
International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting
This study aims to identify if macroeconomics-related indicators consisting of gross domestic product (GDP), inflation, population and economic shocks are related in the Malaysia’s youth unemployment. The youth unemployment rate and its determinants’ data from an extended period of 1982 to 2020 were obtained from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). By employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) analysis, findings show that Gross Domestic Product and Population significantly affect Youth Unemployment in the long-run. These findings indicate that the Malaysian government should develop youth-specific strategies to combat youth unemployment, with Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) quality and availability being …

Global food security can be threatened by short-term extreme events that negatively impact food production, food purchasing power, and agricultural economic activity. At the same time, environmental pollutants like greenhouse gases (GHGs) can be reduced due to the same short-term extreme stressors. Stress events include pandemics like COVID-19 and widespread droughts like those experienced in 2015. Here we consider the question: what if COVID-19 had co-occurred with a 2015-like drought year? Using a coupled biophysical-economic modeling framework, we evaluate how this compound stress would alter both agricultural sector GHG emissions and change the number of undernourished people worldwide. We further …

Design Power And Potential Future Of Global Organization Of Life, A. Fuat Fırat
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
In this essay I propose a definition of design to address its potential role in largely determining power relations in the future. Some foundational discussion of wealth, culturally constructed differently in different historical times, trends of corporatization in the contemporary world, and the birth of control society is presented to help understand the possibilities and difficulties of building future organizations of life. I invite discussions and dialogues to widen and deepen the concept of design power.

Marketing, Development, And The Question Of Meaning, Dominique Bouchet
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Originally developed as a sales technique, marketing ended up playing an economic and political role globally. With the advent of globalization and sustainability issues, the importance given to the techniques of marketing in both analyses and in communication limits the possibility of mutual understanding and of social creativity. A profound understanding of what is at stake for society and culture is not what matters when the focus is on the ways to maintain the superficial link to the instrument of power.
The market plays a central role within the fields of marketing, economics and politics. Yet, questions of what the …

The ‘Awam’ And Reform, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
Pakistan’s economic situation requires fresh thinking and a clear approach. The blame game where each incoming government passes the buck to its predecessor has reached saturation level. People expect the incumbents to show them the path of relief to resolve their present difficulties, particularly inflation. All governments are scared of taking tough, but necessary decisions, for fear of alienating the awam (public), attacks by the opposition parties and media, and erosion of their political capital. Let’s see how this fear is misplaced.

The Independent Contractor Workforce: New Evidence On Its Size And Composition And Ways To Improve Its Measurement In Household Surveys, Katharine G. Abraham, Brad J. Hershbein, Susan N. Houseman, Beth Truesdale
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Good data on the size and composition of the independent contractor workforce are elusive, with household survey and administrative tax data often disagreeing on levels and trends. We carried out a series of focus groups to learn how self-employed independent contractors speak about their work. Based on these findings, we designed and fielded a large-scale telephone survey to elicit more accurate and complete information on independent contractors, including those who may be coded incorrectly as employees in conventional household survey data and those who are independent contractors in a secondary work activity. We find that, upon probing, roughly one in …

The Effect Of Education Policy On Crime: An Intergenerational Perspective, Costas Meghir, Marten Palme, Marieke Schnabel
The Effect Of Education Policy On Crime: An Intergenerational Perspective, Costas Meghir, Marten Palme, Marieke Schnabel
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study the intergenerational effect of education policy on crime. We use Swedish administrative data that links outcomes across generations with crime records and we show that the comprehensive school reform, gradually implemented between 1949 and 1962, reduced conviction rates both for the generation directly affected by the reform and for their sons. The reduction in conviction rates occurred across many types of crime. Key mediators for this reduction in the child generation are an increase in education and a decline in crime amongst their fathers.

Pollution Control And Carbon Reduction In Whole Industrial Process: Method, Strategy And Scientific Basis, Hongbin Cao, He Zhao, Yuehong Zhao, Di Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
As China's environmental protection emission standards are becoming stricter and industrial parks are taking shape, problems such as the lack of stable cooperative treatment technology for toxic pollutants and carbon emission reduction, and the high control cost seriously restrict the sustainable development of economic society and the realization of the strategic goal of carbon emission reduction. Guided by the major environmental protection demand of industries, this study put forward the method, strategy and scientific basis of "Synergistic reduce pollution and carbon in the whole process of industry". Through the coordination of control methods, cross-media, multi-field and multi-factor modeling optimization, the …
Certifiably Employable?: The Effects Of Occupational Regulation On Unemployment Duration, Ilya Kukaev, Edward Timmons
Certifiably Employable?: The Effects Of Occupational Regulation On Unemployment Duration, Ilya Kukaev, Edward Timmons
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Occupational regulation is a labor market institution that has received a growing amount of attention by researchers. Existing research has explored the effects of occupational regulation on wages and employment. To the best of our knowledge, no existing study has estimated the effect of occupational credentials on unemployment duration in the US. We derive a random search model to explain differences in individual unemployment duration resulting from heterogeneous effects from licenses and certificates. Our model predicts that an occupational credential with a stronger signaling or human capital effect results in a shorter individual unemployment duration. To estimate the effect of …

On Income Inequality And Poverty In Egypt: Is Prosperity Immoral?, Mohamed Karim Lotfy Abdelkhalek
Theses and Dissertations
There are varying perspectives on, and divergent solutions to, the phenomena of income inequality and poverty. There seems to be polarizing views on both of these sensitive topics. One side of the argument believes income inequality should in itself be mitigated through redistribution measures, while the other argues that this should not be the focus of policy makers, as it deters them from facing the more pressing issue facing society – which is absolute poverty. The relationship between income inequality, poverty, and citizen well-being in Egypt is one that warrants further research, and this paper aims to fill this lacuna. …

Meeting The Challenge In A Crisis: Students Perceptions Of Emergency On-Line Teaching In Saudi Arabia, Beverley Mcnally, Carmen Winkel, Wejdan Al Obaydan
Arab Economic and Business Journal
This paper explores the perceptions of a group of female Saudi Arabian university students, during the Covid-19 pandemic, regarding emergency on-line learning (EOL). The study utilized a mixed methods approach comprising two surveys. The first, examining the mechanics and structure of the shift. The second, a qualitative design eliciting the students’ responses to EOL. While the students initially enjoyed the experience, as time progressed a sense of dissatisfaction developed which became worse the longer the lockdowns lasted. The results assist policy makers, social workers, and student advisors to prepare for future crises that may result in another prolonged lockdown.

Digital banking and eCommerce are ingredients of overall digital strategy. I would like to limit my remarks on the financialsector and how digital banking fits into that. We should not forget the purpose for which the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is promoting digital banking. And that is it is an effective tool for strengthening intermediation and financial inclusion in the country inthe pursuit of larger, equitable and sustainable development of Pakistan.
Good Governance: The Path To Development, Eduardo Landaeta
Good Governance: The Path To Development, Eduardo Landaeta
Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)
This paper aims to understand to what extent good governance and effective public policies are aligned in the economic growth of a country. International assistance relies on political-economic analysis to evaluate the donations they can provide to a country. In this regard, good governance of domestic institutions is essential for the efficiency of a country, especially in affiliation with foreign aid. Therefore, a relationship avoiding dependency should be the focus in the short or medium-term.

The Impact Of Social Network Friendship On Lending Behaviors: An Empirical Analysis Of Peer-To-Peer Lending In China, Xianyun Chen
Fordham Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation builds on the theoretical framework of information asymmetry, signaling theory, and social network, and empirically studies the impact of social network friendship on peer-to-peer lending (P2P). Using the P2P lending data from China, it studies how social network affects the lending willingness in China’s P2P lending. In particular, it examines the effect of social network on the adverse selection in P2P lending in China, and the effect of social network on interest and default rates. It also explores how P2P loans use the advantages in low-cost customer acquisition and fast …
