Values, Beliefs, And Attitudes In A Sociotechnical Setting, F. Gregory Hayden
Values, Beliefs, And Attitudes In A Sociotechnical Setting, F. Gregory Hayden
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
Yngve Ramstad has recently inquired about how to define the components of the social fabric matrix and digraph system [Ramstad 1986; Hayden 1982a, 1982b]. To answer that question with regard to three of the matrix's components is the purpose of this article. The article will present, expand, and refine the author's introductory work on values, beliefs, and attitudes for the social fabric matrix [Hayden 1977, 19851. There are numerous meanings the word "values" evokes among institutionalist readers; for examples: social value, instrumental valuing, technological values, and valuation. Those concepts are concerned with "what ought to be," while the definition of …
Culture Analysis In A Merger Environment, Dorairaj Sharathram
Culture Analysis In A Merger Environment, Dorairaj Sharathram
Theses
The effects of the merger upon the People Express Airline company is studied with particular emphasis upon changes in corporate culture and structure.
A case study approach utilizes an extensive literature search and interviews with People Express executives. It is confirmed that the structural change has led to the cultural change.
With a unique style of management structure and culture, People Express, due to its own mistakes and problems, quickly lost its market share and allowed itself to be taken over by Continental Airlines a subsidiary of Houston based Texas Air Corp.
It is interesting to note that the corporate …

Fiscal Decentralization And Government Size, Michael L. Marlow
Fiscal Decentralization And Government Size, Michael L. Marlow
Economics
Numerous studies have attempted to model the possible factors contributing to universal growth in public sectors. This paper analyzes one device that appears capable of controlling some of that growth: fiscal decentralization. The results reported here also support the use of monopoly government assumptions in models of public policy. The author gratefully acknowledges the comments of Angelo R. Mascaro, Gordon Tullock and an anonymous referee. Views expressed here are of the author alone and do not necessarily represent those of the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The Relationship Between Social Work And Labor Unions: A History Of Strife And Cooperation, Shulamith Lala Ashenberg Straussner, Norma Kolko Phillips
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The historical relationship between social work and organized labor has been an ambivalent one, with fluctuations paralleling historical changes in social and political values. This paper examines the changing nature of the relationship, with emphasis on the period from the 1870s to the 1940s. While today's relationship is a mutually beneficial one, the fragile nature of the link between organized labor and the social work community cannot be ignored, particularly in light of the increasing involvement between social work and private industry
The Change In Factors Affecting Physician Choice Of Practice Location: A Comparison Of Younger And Older Rural And Metropolitan Physicians, Theodore M. Breu
The Change In Factors Affecting Physician Choice Of Practice Location: A Comparison Of Younger And Older Rural And Metropolitan Physicians, Theodore M. Breu
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This study uses multiple discriminant analysis to derive the factors that physicians deem important in their decisions about where to locate their medical practices. Older physicians are compared to younger physicians both within rural areas and within metropolitan areas. Three of the top four discriminating variables for the youngest doctors were influence of the preceptorship period, preference of the spouse, and the repayment of a forgiveness loan. For the oldest group of doctors, two of the top three discriminating variables were the opportunity to join a desirable two-person partnership, and the perception of a high medical need in the area.
