The State, Law And Urban Poverty In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla Jan 1989

The State, Law And Urban Poverty In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This paper is about the state, law and urban poverty in Tanzania. The paper examines how the state in Tanzania has been trying to solve the problem of urban poverty. The main argument is that the state's conception of urban poverty is not realistic. The urban poor are seen as responsible for their poverty. This is confirmed by the kind of coercive policies, legislation and other measures which have been instituted by the state in order to solve the problem. The paper argues that due to lack of a critical analysis of the causes of poverty, the state has been …

Regional Differences In Labor Demand In The United States, Rudy Fichtenbaum, John P. Blair Jan 1989

Regional Differences In Labor Demand In The United States, Rudy Fichtenbaum, John P. Blair

Economics Faculty Publications

A possible explanation for the lack of attention to regional demand variation is that analysts have assumed implicitly that the elasticity at demand was roughly comparable among regions. However, this assumption does not seem tenable, the purpose of this study was to fill this important gap in the literature. The hypothesis was that there were significant differences in the elasticity of the demand for labor. Knowledge of differences in demand elasticity for labor can be extremely important to policy makers at both the state and federal levels. At the federal level, knowledge of differences in regional demand elasticities would allow …

A Consistency Model For India's Eight And Ninth Plans: With Analysis Of Basic Needs, Ranajit Dhar, M R Rao, Sanjay Goel Dec 1988

A Consistency Model For India's Eight And Ninth Plans: With Analysis Of Basic Needs, Ranajit Dhar, M R Rao, Sanjay Goel

IIMB Management Review

India has been giving, as part of the various five year plans, an increasingly
high emphasis on poverty alleviation. However, success till now cannot be
considered as satisfactory. Nearly 40 crore people, representing half the population
of the country, are deprived of the basic necessities of life such as minimum
nutrition, clothing, housing, health and educational facilities etc. This number is the
same as the population we had at the time of independence in 1947.
The country is now engaged.in the preparation of the Eighth plan (1990-91
to 1994-95). It is essential that the problem of poverty alleviation is tackled …

The Role Of Unincorporated Enterprises In The Indian Economy, R Vaidyanathan

IIMB Management Review

The objective of this paper is to highlight the role of unincorporated
enterprises in the national economy. Most of the studics regarding the nonagricultural
portion of our economy concentrate on the corporate or company sector.
Discussions on saving, taxation, capital formation, etc. also to a large extent pertain
to the corporate sector, consisting of companies which are incorporated under the
Company’s Act of 1956. But the other sector, viz., unincorporated enterprises has
not been studied thoroughly in respect of its role in the national economy. In our
context this should include a study of proprietorships, partnerships, HUFs,
Cooperatives, ie. organisations …

The Environmental, Economic, And Social Impacts Of Resort Development And Tourism On Native Hawaiians, Jon Matsuoka, Terry Kelly Dec 1988

The Environmental, Economic, And Social Impacts Of Resort Development And Tourism On Native Hawaiians, Jon Matsuoka, Terry Kelly

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Hawaii is currently undergoing major changes associated with land and industrial development. A shift in focus from agriculture to tourism has led to massive land development throughout the islands in order to accommodate this growing industry. The people affected most by these environmental changes are the indigenous people of Hawaii who exist in close harmony with the land and sea. As natural habitats are destroyed, fish and other food sources disappear. This has profound affects upon the behavior and practices of Hawaiian people who must look to other means for subsistence. Changes in the environment are inherently tied to changes …

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley Oct 1988

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

As part of the effort to inaugurate a new international socio-political order after World War II, international emphasis was given to certain moral and legal entitlements we have come to call human rights. That emphasis initially found its most forceful expression in the Charter of the United Nations, which not only asserts its members' faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, as well as in the equal rights of men and women of all nations, but also recites its members' commitment to employ international machinery for the promotion of the social and economic …
