An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu Sep 1991

An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu

Economic and Financial Review

In this econometric revisitation of inflation in Nigeria, an extensive review of the literature and evidence has been attempted culminating in a specification of the various alternative hypotheses on the causes of inflation. While not ruling out the validity of several theories of inflation in the Nigerian situation, empirical evidence indicates that increases in real domestic produce or supply situation, especially food, and law cost of production of consumables, tended to ameliorate inflation. On the other hand, increases in government expenditure, especially deficits, tend to increase the money supply and worsen depreciation of the exchange rate, which in turn intensify …

The New Wave Of Environmental Regulation: The Impacts On Business And Consumers, Murray L. Weidenbaum Aug 1991

The New Wave Of Environmental Regulation: The Impacts On Business And Consumers, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

Following the regulatory excesses of the 1970s and the reforms of the 1980s, the policy pendulum is swinging back again. On the surface, the government imposing socially desirable requirements on business seems to be a cheap way of achieving national objectives. But every time a government agency attempts to safeguard the environment or foster occupational health or promote product safety, it imposes a more expensive method of production on businesses. Consumers, meanwhile, suffer by paying for these hidden regulations.

The Future Of The U.S. Defense Industry, Murray L. Weidenbaum Jul 1991

The Future Of The U.S. Defense Industry, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The U.S. defense industry is at a fork in the road and faces the prospect of substantial declines. There are two approaches that can be taken: Convert to civilian production or cut back and slim down. Conversion has a great deal of appeal, as it keeps the jobs of defense workers in place. The cut-back alternative is an austerity measure designed to maintain the financial health of the defense firms. The purpose of this paper is to provide some guidance in the selection between these two alternatives.

The Global Economy And The American Welfare State, Howard Jacob Karger Jun 1991

The Global Economy And The American Welfare State, Howard Jacob Karger

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The American social welfare state is approaching a crisis because of the global economy. Survival in a new world economy requires corporations to become more efficient, a strategy which leads to a rapidly changing technology, plant shutdowns, and industrial reorganization. To aid corporations, government often curbs taxes to make capital available for investment. These policies can lead to governmental debt, reduced welfare services, a deterioration in the infrastructure, and myriad social problems. This article investigates the effects of the global economy on the American welfare state.

The Role Of Central Bank Of Nigeria In The Relation To The Banking And Insurance Industries, Victor A. Odozi

Bullion

The financial services industry is on the threshold of a revolution. The advent of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in Mid-1986, with its underlying philosophy of liberalisation and deregulation, has brought about a proliferation of banks and non-bank financial institutions. Competition has intensified, there has been increased innovation and sophistication in product design and delivery. While the new changes have enhanced the opportunities for business and profits, they have also engendered challenges and problems calling for policy action. A number of banks arc suffering various degrees of distress manifested in liquidity problems and insolvency. The paper is in four parts: …

Toward A More Comprehensive Explanation Of Declining Black Male Youth Employment, Mark Israel '91 May 1991

Toward A More Comprehensive Explanation Of Declining Black Male Youth Employment, Mark Israel '91

Honors Projects

By any standard, the employment position of black males has deteriorated dramatically over the last 25 years. The magnitude and duration of this decline have convinced policy makers and economists alike that serious concern is warranted. Between 1968 and 1988, for example, the employment position of black males, 16 to 19, fell nearly ten points, from just over 38 percent to 29 percent. This decline, which is similar to that in the 20 to 24 year old age group, is indicative of a crisis inside our nation's ghettos, where millions of black male youths are without work and not attending …

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller May 1991

A Simulation Of The Economic Effects Of Alternative Soil Types And Nitrogen Sources On Nitrate Leaching On Irrigated Agriculture In Utah, Gilbert D. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic impact of reducing the amount of nitrate leached out of the root zone under irrigation in the arid West was examined. A general introduction into the nature of the problem and a review of the literature was provided in chapter I. In chapter ll the economic incentives of irrigation management were evaluated under the assumptions of both profit-maximizing and utility-maximizing (in reducing cost and effort expended in irrigation) decision-making criteria. The results indicate that there is a coincidence of interests of the farmer and the environment. Both behaviors result in less nitrate leaching than less profitable or less …

The Relationship Between On-Budget And Off-Budget Government, David Joulfaian, Michael L. Marlow

Perestroĭka, Social Justice And Public Opinion, David S. Mason, Svetlana Sydorenko Mar 1991

Perestroĭka, Social Justice And Public Opinion, David S. Mason, Svetlana Sydorenko

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In its struggle to reform, the Soviet leadership faces a major dilemma in attempting to reconcile economic efficiency with a commitment to social justice. The economic reforms of perestroika call for a greater role for market mechanisms and even private enterprise. However, these policies often run up against a public opinion that is staunchly egalitarian. Public attitudes that are, on the one hand, critical of elite privileges and distrustful of the state distributive apparatus are also, on the other hand, supponive of centralized distribution of resources, limitations on high incomes, and restrictions on private propeny.

The issue of social justice …
