Pluralism, Multiculturalism And Group Rights, Chandran Kukathas Apr 1996

Pluralism, Multiculturalism And Group Rights, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

However prevalent may have been the longing for homogeneity, or at least social unity, in political thinking, the fundamental point which must be recognized is that cultural diversity or pluralism has been the most notable feature of society in the history of human set tlement. "Marginality and pluralism were and are the norm of civi lized existence."1 There are several reasons why this is the pattern revealed by history.2 The first has to do with the ubiquity of military conflict. Even among barbarians ethnic political unity was fragile because military conquests resulted in the mixing of peoples. But throughout history …

Lower Chesapeake Maritime Enterprise: 1781-1812, D. Dennis Duff Apr 1996

Lower Chesapeake Maritime Enterprise: 1781-1812, D. Dennis Duff

History Theses & Dissertations

The American Revolutionary War, officially concluded by the Treaty of Paris of 1783, forever changed American maritime enterprise. An examination of the response of Lower Chesapeake merchants to elimination of the British monopoly on American seagoing commerce reveals that Virginia shipping activity recovered quickly after the conflict, then expanded and prospered until the War of 1812. In addition to propelling the Commonwealth's post-war economic resurgence, Virginia's prosperous foreign trading interests influenced political decisions on Constitutional ratification, establishment of Confederation period and early national commercial policies, and diplomatic initiatives to strengthen American overseas exchange.

Principal sources include customs records of the …

An Empirical Analysis Of Dutch Disease: Developing And Developed Countries, David Rudd '96 Apr 1996

An Empirical Analysis Of Dutch Disease: Developing And Developed Countries, David Rudd '96

Honors Projects

Dutch Disease occurs when a country discovers a substantial natural resource deposit and begins a large-scale exportation of it. As a result, the country's currency appreciates, thereby reducing the competitiveness of the country's traditional export sector. Therefore, this tradable goods sector should contract, leading to structural changes and unemployment in the economy. Neary and Van Wijnbergen (1986) develop the theoretical underpinnings by identifying the two components of Dutch Disease: the spending effect and the resource-movement effect. Using these theoretical components, the paper attempts to account for the decline in the Netherlands' manufacturing sector and Nigeria's and Indonesia's agriculture sectors. The …

Why Do People Dislike Inflation?, Robert J. Shiller Mar 1996

Why Do People Dislike Inflation?, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A questionnaire survey was conducted to explore how people think about inflation, and what real problems they see it as causing. With results from 677 people, comparisons were made among people in the U.S., Germany, and Brazil, between young and old, and between economists and non-economists. Among non-economists in all countries, the largest concern with inflation appears to be that it lowers people’s standard of living. Non-economists appear often to believe in a sort of sticky-wage model, by which wages do not respond to inflationary shocks, shocks which are themselves perceived as caused by certain people or institutions acting badly. …

On Early Warning Models For The Identification Of Problem Banks In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa Mar 1996

On Early Warning Models For The Identification Of Problem Banks In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa

Economic and Financial Review

This paper proposes alternative early warning models which could be helpful in identifying problem banks in Nigeria. The models rely on the /ogit-analytic technique and the use of financial ratios derived from the monthly returns the licensed banks render to both the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). The two separate models, each developed for commercial and merchant bank, are more efficient in that they drastically reduced the mis-classification errors inherent in other failure prediction models developed in the past. To illustrate the applications of the models for policy, an appraisal of the financial condition …

Reducing The Welfare Dependence Of Single-Mother Families: Health-Related Employment Barriers And Policy Responses, Jean Kimmel Mar 1996

Reducing The Welfare Dependence Of Single-Mother Families: Health-Related Employment Barriers And Policy Responses, Jean Kimmel

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The problem of rising health care costs and the related increased dependency on health insurance coverage has moved to the forefront of the U.S. policy agenda in recent years and was a fundamental component of President Clinton's 1992 campaign platform. However, the President's 1994 health care reform proposal was unsuccessful, and current GOP proposals to cut the rate of growth of Medicare and Medicaid spending while the eligible population and costs both continue to grow fail to address the problem of coverage. In fact, one likely side effect of the cost-shifting to private insurance carriers will be to increase the …

Technology Transfer And Integrated Social Development: International Issues And Possibilities For Social Work, James O. Billups,, Maria C. Julia,

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Technology transfer and integrated social development are closely linked aspects of social work practice that deserve more serious attention than they have received to date. Social workers need to play more knowledgeable and active roles in utilizing a broad-scale partnership model that will help communities and societies screen and adapt technologies so that they can be appropriately integrated with people's values, culture, concerns and aspirations. Everyone should ultimately benefit if the poor and disempowered peoples of the world in particular become the primary focus and the beneficiaries of less arrogant and more inclusive strategies of technology transfer. The aim of …

Why Is The Economic Of Patronage Bad For The Politics Of Survival?, Ishrat Husain Dr Jan 1996

Why Is The Economic Of Patronage Bad For The Politics Of Survival?, Ishrat Husain Dr

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The revival of democracy in its undiluted form in 1988 had generated a sense of euphoria throughout the country. The expectations were high, hopes were rekindled for economic well being of general masses and a path to normalcy was envisioned. The situation today is nowhere close to those original expectations and there is a growing sense of resentment against the encroaching forces of privilege and patronage getting a firm hold on the economy. The authoritarian regimes devoid oflegitimate political power, are, perforce, impelled to use the instruments of state power to win or maintain coalitions, build up new alliances or …
