Philippine Development: A Research Journey Through The Philippine Journal Of Development, Fernando T. Aldaba
Economics Department Faculty Publications
After 27 years of existence, the Philippine Journal of Development (PJD) is considered one of the longest running journals in the country. First published in 1974, the PJD started as a semestral publication of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and was called the NEDA Journal of Development. The Journal aimed to serve as a vehicle to disseminate the important factors affecting the development process as well as a forum where development issues could be discussed from the larger perspectives of the social sciences. With the founding of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the management of the …

The Role Of World Trade Organizations In Settling Trade Disputes Between The United States And The European Union, Erin Walker
The Role Of World Trade Organizations In Settling Trade Disputes Between The United States And The European Union, Erin Walker
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Description of Topic: In settling trade disputes, members of the World Trade Organization use a dispute settlement mechanism set forth in the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations. This multilateral system of settling disputes is implemented if a member believes other members are violating trade rules. Disputes arise when countries adopt policies that break the WTO agreements or that cause them to fail to fulfill obligations. Dispute settlement procedures have existed under many different trade agreements. While current processes are more effective than those of past agreements, they still lack credibility and effectiveness. Research and Results: The United States and the …

No. 24: Spaces Of Vulnerability: Migration And Hiv/Aids In South Africa, Brian Williams, Eleanor Gouws, Mark Lurie, Jonathan Crush
Southern African Migration Programme
Seventy per cent of the 36 million people infected worldwide with HIV live in Sub-Saharan Africa and within this region the countries of Southern Africa are the worst affected. The eight countries with the highest rates of infection are in Southern Africa, followed by six countries in East Africa, and then five other countries, only one outside Africa. The reasons why the highest rates of infection in the world occur in Southern Africa are unclear. Although the countries of the region have much in common, their histories over the last twenty years have been very different.
A number of different …

No. 23: Gender And The Brain Drain From South Africa, Belinda Dodson
Southern African Migration Programme
South Africa is experiencing a substantial “brain drain”, underestimated in official emigration statistics. Yet there is uncertainty over issues such as why some leave and others stay, whether people who leave do so for good, and whether the brain drain will accelerate in the future. The surveys upon which this paper is based aimed to add some substance to the debate on the loss of core skills to the South African economy. They present a profile of the skilled population of South Africa and provide some insight into the factors determining emigration potential. Two distinct surveys were conducted: one of …

Part 7: Newspapers In Hampton Roads: Competition, Coverage And Issues, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
The region is fortunate to have two major daily newspapers plus a plethora of weekly, monthly and topically oriented publications. We examine their news coverage and ask how things might be different if only one major daily newspaper existed.

Part 5: Public Social Services In Hampton Roads: A Primer, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Last year, governments spent nearly $600 million to provide social services within Hampton Roads. These services are part of the "social safety net" of which many regional citizens are ignorant. We detail the programs and their challenges.

Five years ago, very few people would have believed that it was possible to end homelessness for the most marginalized Americans. Today, the idea that we can end the cycle of homelessness and institutionalization for vulnerable Americans is so mainstream that the Bush administration declared in its 2003 budget proposal that it considers “ending chronic homelessness in the next decade a top objective.” The key to this turnaround in thinking is supportive housing, an approach that is both smart and compassionate” according to a recent editorial in the New York Times. It is a concept that is proving to be …

Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey
Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota beef cow/calf producers who had completed a 2000 Standardized Performance Analysis were surveyed and interviewed to gain a better understanding of what personal characteristics and management factors may help determine profitability. Low, medium and high profitability categories were defined by calculating one standard deviation above or below a mean ROA. Producers were unaware of their profitability category at the time of the interview. Statistically significant differences were found in reference to the involvement of the operator in physical labor and management functions, and in the percentage of other family members involved in the management functions in the enterprise. …
Parametric And Non Parametric Testing For Income Convergence, James O. Bukenya, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer
Parametric And Non Parametric Testing For Income Convergence, James O. Bukenya, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This paper examines the degree to which per capita incomes have converged across counties in West Virginia over the last thirty years. The increase in government transfers and, possibly, other government assistance programs would suggest that incomes in spatially dispersed regions/counties within nation-state should become similar over this period. However, the interrelation between business cycles, migration, employment structure and changes in per capita earnings over time reduces this possibility. Comparable county data are obtained for two dissmilar regions: southern and eastern panhandle. The empirical results differ across the different measurement techniques used, but in general, the findings concur with the …
Structural Change Of The Chicago Economy: A Temporal Inverse Analysis, Yasuhide Okuyama, Michael Sonis, Geoffrey Hewings
Structural Change Of The Chicago Economy: A Temporal Inverse Analysis, Yasuhide Okuyama, Michael Sonis, Geoffrey Hewings
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Earlier study (Sonis and Hewings, 1998) proposed an alternative tool that can assist in exploiting trends and uncovering tendencies in individual sectors or groups of sectors within the context of an economy-wide system of accounts. In this paper, the methodology, Temporal Leontief Inverse Analysis, is applied to a set of annual input-output tables for the Chicago metropolitan economy during the period of 1980-97. The results are compared to the earlier analysis (Hewings et al., 1998, Okuyama et al., 2002a, and Okuyama et al. 2002b) to examine the method and to investigate further the structural changes of the Chicago economy.
A Spatial Logit Association Model For Cluster Detection, Ge Lin
A Spatial Logit Association Model For Cluster Detection, Ge Lin
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
In this paper, I propose a logit spatial association model for binary spatial events and develop a scan algorithm to search for spatial associations. I extend the traditional logit model with spatial autocorrelated component so that the model includes not only known risk factors, but also spatially autocorrelated regions as a control or explanatory factor. The case study of West Virginia Lung Cancer shows that the model effectively captures cool and hot spots in lung cancer mortality.
Interregion-Occupational Persistence And Dispersion: A Model Of Geographic And Occupational Mobility, Ge Lin, Christiadi
Interregion-Occupational Persistence And Dispersion: A Model Of Geographic And Occupational Mobility, Ge Lin, Christiadi
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This paper represents the first attempt to develop a set of loglinear models that synthesize gravity models of interregional mobility and loglinear models of occupational mobility. The development of the model is progressed from a simple two-way mobility table analysis to a three-way analysis that controls for one aspect of mobility while investigating another and eventually to a four-way analysis that simultaneously assesses the joint effect of occupational and geographic mobility. An example based on data from the 1970 United States census demonstrates that the models can effectively capture the joint effect of occupational and geographic mobility. The results show …
Handling Competing Values In Ethics, Economics, & Management: A Cross-Cultural Empirical Study Of American & Danish Managerial Attitudes, Annemette Kruse Jensen
Handling Competing Values In Ethics, Economics, & Management: A Cross-Cultural Empirical Study Of American & Danish Managerial Attitudes, Annemette Kruse Jensen
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This empirical cross-cultural research was conducted to confirm four hypotheses. The hypotheses included: 1) For American managers there will be at least a 0.55 correlation or more among their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 2) American managers more than Danish managers will tend to emphasize control in their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 3) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit emphasis and correlation among Virtue Ethics, Community Capitalism, and Human Relations theories and attitudes; 4) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit extreme managerial practice attitudes according to the Competing Values Framework. The limits of the research …

Carve-Outs In Workers' Compensation: An Analysis Of The Experience In The California Construction Industry, David I. Levine, Frank Neuhauser, Richard Reuben, Jeffrey S. Petersen, Cristian Echeverria
Upjohn Press
Employers and unions in several states during the 1990s were allowed to "carve out" their own workers' compensation systems. These innovative reforms gave the parties the right to collectively bargain their own systems outside the statutory systems. In addition, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) systems were implemented in order speed the legal process and reduce litigation costs. This book offers an evaluation of the first few years' experience with these organizational reforms in California.

Medical Devices: A Stronghold Of The Commonwealth's Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
We benefit from medical devices throughout our lives: Prenatal development is monitored by ultrasound devices, sports injuries are diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging and fixed with arthroscopic tools, and heart blockages are cleared with angioplasties and drug-coated stents. Devices include the simple and mundane—eyeglasses and thermometers—and stretch to the boundaries of technology—laser scalpels, needles embedded with microprocessors, MRI machines, and artificial hearts. All are products of the medical device industry. Massachusetts is one of the nation’s leading states in medical device development and production.

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A programming approach, data envelopment analysis (DEA), will sort and rank occupations on the basis of maximizing skills required and minimizing that occupation's wage resulting in a set of "hiring" efficiency scores. This procedure improves Borda rankings (rankings based on the average of rankings of the individual components), fixed weight, or subjective weighting schemes. In DEA, the linear programming weights or coefficients are explicitly chosen to maximize the discrimination between the skills and wages. A rank correlation between the efficiency scores and various work and demographic variables is performed. The results show a negative correlation between the wage rate and …
