Socioeconomic Performance In Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Areas During The 1980s, F. Carson Mencken, Joachim Singelmann Jan 1997

Socioeconomic Performance In Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Areas During The 1980s, F. Carson Mencken, Joachim Singelmann

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The socioeconomic gap between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas increased during the 1980s. We test three competing explanations for this trend during the 1980s: overdependence on manufacturing, especially in nonmetro labor markets, the emergence of producer services as a catalyst of socioeconomic growth, and federal spending. Using a model that is informed by a variety of perspectives in sociology and economic geography, and commuter zones (CZs) as spatial units of analysis, we estimate the effects of manufacturing concentration, producer service concentration, and federal spending on per capita income, per capita earnings, and private nonfarm employment growth during the 1983-1988 business cycle …

Right-To-Work Laws And Local Economic Growth: Recent Evidence From Appalachia, F. Carson Mencken Jan 1997

Right-To-Work Laws And Local Economic Growth: Recent Evidence From Appalachia, F. Carson Mencken

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Right-to-work legislation continues to be debated at both the national and state levels. This paper seeks to inform the debate on the effectiveness of RTW laws as an economic development strategy. Using the 399 counties ofAppalachia as a case study, and a model informed by the human ecology and the new urban sociology, this paper compares recent earnings change during the last three business cycles in counties from right-to-work and non right-to-work states in the region. The analysis combines shift-share analysis and spatial lag regression analysis and estimates the relative effects of a variety of measures on county earnings change. …

The Economic And Social Impacts Of Nimbys, Terance J. Rephann Jan 1997

The Economic And Social Impacts Of Nimbys, Terance J. Rephann

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This paper examines some of the issues and controversies that arise when facilities with perceived noxious environmental, social, and economic effects (NIMBYs) locate in communites. Five specific categories of NIMBYs are examined, including: (1) interstate highways, (2) large dams, (3) medium and maximum security prisons, (4) commercial nuclear power plants, and (5) gambling casinos. The paper uses quasi-experimental control group methods to assess the economic impacts of these facilities on U.S. counties during the period 1972-94. The paper shows that few actual negative effects can be attributed to NIMBYs. However, only interstate highways result in broad based effects that measurably …

Economic Reforms And Health Conditions Of The Urban Poor In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla Jan 1997

Economic Reforms And Health Conditions Of The Urban Poor In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This paper examines the impact of economic reforms, namely Structural Adjustment Policies (SAPs), on the health conditions of the Tanzanian urban poor. My conclusion is that these policies have had detrimental effects on the living conditions of the urban poor. Thus, SAPs are contributing to the deterioration of health conditions among these people rather than improving them. SAPs are affecting these people in a variety of ways. First, by affecting negatively the development of the urban environment, SAPs are destroying the environmental conditions on which the poor depend for their existence and survival. Secondly, by impacting the provision of urban …

Vybrané Teoretické Interpretace Současné Transformace Kapitalismu (Selected Theoretical Interpretations Of The Contemporary Transition Of Capitalism), Petr Pavlinek

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Současná transformace kapitalismu začala na konci šedesátých a začátku sedmdesátých let dvacátého století.

The contemporary transition of capitalism is changing the nature of the capitalist economic and social system. This paper focuses on the debate around the alleged transition from Fordism to post-Fordism. It identifies and critically evaluates four Western schools of thought engaged in this debate: Schumpeterian and neo-Schumpeterian …

Industrial Trade Shows: Their Role And Spatial Dimension In Industrial Restructuring, Andras Gosztonyi Jan 1997

Industrial Trade Shows: Their Role And Spatial Dimension In Industrial Restructuring, Andras Gosztonyi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The fundamental changes in the economic environment since the 1970s put firms under immense pressure to adjust their strategies to the increasingly dynamic and flexible global economy. The simultaneous upsurge in industrial trade show activity suggests that these events hold a central position in the process of restructuring. Therefore this study aims at theoretically examining the economic functions of trade shows and thus their role in economic restructuring. Yet, if trade shows are significant in industrial restructuring, it is important to learn about their spatial structure and thus their accessibility to firms in different countries and regions. This is carried …

Exploring Social Polarization In Jefferson County, Kentucky: An Analytical Approach, Jason Finley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the processes of social polarization, an increasing gap between the rich and poor, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, to determine the spatial characteristics involved and to investigate useful methodological tools. I argue that social polarization processes are evident in Jefferson County, and I attempt to describe and analyze the emerging spatial characteristics of polarization in the study area. The study area comprises the thirteen market areas of Jefferson County, which were broken down into 3 socioeconomic regions based on the natural breaks of market area median household income. Each market area is analyzed …

The Impact Of Personal And Location Characteristics Upon Elderly Interstate Migration, David E. Clark, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White Jun 1996

The Impact Of Personal And Location Characteristics Upon Elderly Interstate Migration, David E. Clark, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of locational and individual characteristics upon interstate retiree migration, particularly in state-level public policy variables. Data regarding the characteristics of individual movers are drawn from the 1990 US. Census of Population and Housing 5% Public Use Microdata Sample. The household data are merged with location-specific attributes including both natural amenities and local fiscal variables. Three specifications of the model are estimated. The “push” model analyzes the impact of origin characteristics upon migration between states, while the “pull” model demonstrates the influence of destination characteristics upon interstate migration. The final specification …

Manufacturing's Role In The Growth Of An Industrialized Mature Economy, James F. Gill Jan 1996

Manufacturing's Role In The Growth Of An Industrialized Mature Economy, James F. Gill

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Manufacturing is the primary driver of major wealth formation and competitiveness in every significant economy. Therefore, it would appear that the more dominant role in manufacturing plays in overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the greater is the annual comparative growth rate of the economy. Manufacturing is 19 percent of GDP for the United States, 30 percent for Japan, 31 percent for Korea, and 35 percent for Germany, as of 1987.

The term "manufacturing" as used here does not include construction, mining, forestry, fishing and other similar activities. There are two general definitions (See footnote, OECD/2/World Bank. U.N. SNA).

Interactive Techniques And Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, Luc Anselin Jan 1996

Interactive Techniques And Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, Luc Anselin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This chapter reviews the ideas behind interactive and exploratory spatial data analysis and their relation to GIS. Three important aspects are considered. First, an overview is presented of the principles behind interactive spatial data analysis, based on insights from the use of dynamic graphics in statistics and their extension to spatial data. This is followed by a review of spatialised exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques, that is, ways in which a spatial representation can be given to standard EDA tools by associating them with particular locations or spatial subsets of the data. The third aspect covers the main ideas behind …

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf Jan 1996

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf

Center for Policy Research

Research on the patterns and behavioral consequences of kin networks among the older population is limited due to the shortcomings of most available survey data. Often, household surveys obtain little information on the number and characteristics of nonresident kin. Moreover, surveys are often confined to the noninstitutionalized population. One possible solution is to merge information from multiple sources, in order to achieve the requisite coverage of populations and data content. This paper reports on the development of a hybrid data base containing observations from the 1987-88 National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and the 1989 National Long-Term Care Survey …

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy Jan 1996

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Farmers and ranchers face a most troubling dilemma. Complex political forces have mapped two quite different paths to environmental management-a rollback of federal regulations or a buildup of traditional subsidies. In the words of a famous modern philosopher, "When you reach a fork in the road, take it!" But either choice poses risk for the industry and will not likely ameliorate nettlesome environmental problems. A third path could help the industry maintain competitiveness and meet environmental challenges. This path uses me latest science to identify agroenvironmental problems and emphasizes economically attractive technology to sustain environmental improvements.
