Who Wouldn't Get The Joke?: Vile Sovereignty, Vanishing Mediators, And Trump, Simon Orpana, Evan Mauro Jan 2026

Who Wouldn't Get The Joke?: Vile Sovereignty, Vanishing Mediators, And Trump, Simon Orpana, Evan Mauro

Fast Capitalism

This article considers Trump as an example of "vile sovereignty," a concept Michel Foucault put forward in the mid 1970s to describe "the exercise of power through the explicit disqualification of the person who wields it" (2003b: 35)—a "childish discourse" that disqualifies the speaker at the very moment that they are being appealed to as a figure of authority (36). We argue that this concept helps illuminate contemporary US politics, where Trump's carnivalesque flaunting of political decorum and morality paradoxically seem to buttress the power of his Republican Party. Building upon our theorization of the role vile sovereignty has played …

Capitalism, Racism, And Trumpism: Whitelash And The Politics Of Oppression, David G. Embrick, J. Scott Carter, Cameron Lippard, Bhoomi K. Thakore

Fast Capitalism

That the rising tide of fascism, headwinds of neoliberalism, or persistence of racism in the United States is institutional, systemic, and part of a long history of oppression towards various groups is not new news. The bigger question is how we got to a point in which overt manifestations of racism, sexism, faux democracy, and other forms of illegality and authoritarianism has once again become normalized. What does it mean when a sitting President claims that Mexican immigrants are rapists, criminals, and drug runners? How did we get to a point where we, collectively, are not as outraged as we …

Reactionary Technopolitics: A Critical Sociohistorical Review, Sean Doody Jan 2026

Reactionary Technopolitics: A Critical Sociohistorical Review, Sean Doody

Fast Capitalism

This paper outlines a critical social history of reactionary media, political, and information networks ”what I refer to generally as technopolitics” in the United States and their significance to the hostility towards truth and fact that is a central feature of our political present. I begin with a critical review of the unique right-wing media and political ecosystem that emerged from the alliance between neoliberalism and social conservatism in the twentieth-century. In the second section, I focus on digitization, Trump, and the alt-right, and discuss the historical tethers connecting the latter to the cyber-libertarians and white supremacists operating on the …

The Death Of Neoliberal Realism?, Zachariah William Wheeler Jan 2026

The Death Of Neoliberal Realism?, Zachariah William Wheeler

Fast Capitalism

Post-punk theorist Mark Fisher (d. 2017) shows how neoliberalism relies on a "reflexive impudence" imposed on politics and culture by the necessity of "realism." Neoliberalism puts fixed limits on how we can imagine the future, and what degree of deviation can be expected from participating in the political process. This paper takes seriously Fisher's perspective, analyzing recent political events in the U.S. as they relate to the use of neoliberalism as a deflationary political tactic. My analysis expands on how two different figures, Trump and Sanders, politicize discourse and develop consciousness outside of this pre-approved realism enforced by neoliberalism. Figures …

The Carnival King Of Capital, Charles Thorpe Jan 2026

The Carnival King Of Capital, Charles Thorpe

Fast Capitalism

This paper argues that President Donald Trump may be understood as ruling through carnival. The theatrical reversal of conventional standards and rules, his carnivalesque incivility, is key to his political persona. It performs his claim to be an outsider, attacking and subverting the Washington DC establishment. But Trump's carnivalesque performance, far from undermining the dominant order, reflects it. What Trump represents is carnivalized capital, a financialized and globalized form of capital that has broken free of the social and legal restraints of the nation state. The carnivalesque chaos of Trump's presidency reflects the chaos of financialized capitalism.

The Art Of The Deal, The Arts Of Democracy: Trump, Dewey, And Democracy, Nancy Sue Love Jan 2026

The Art Of The Deal, The Arts Of Democracy: Trump, Dewey, And Democracy, Nancy Sue Love

Fast Capitalism

Donald Trump's politics has been variously described as "neoliberal," "nationalist," "authoritarian," "populist," and even "fascist," and all these descriptors are appropriate in some respects. In this article, I explore the linkages between Trump, neoliberalism, and fascism through what may seem an unlikely aspect of his politics, that is, his artistry as a candidate and now the president. In elevating deal-making to an art form, Trump is not unique. Fascist leaders have long fancied themselves as artists and regarded politics as an art form. I argue that Trump's "art of the deal" materializes and normalizes the aesthetics of neoliberal capitalism; it …

Using Fed Funds Futures To Predict A Federal Reserve Rate Hike Jan 2026

Using Fed Funds Futures To Predict A Federal Reserve Rate Hike

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

This paper demonstrates formulas used by market participants to predict the probability of an increase in the Fed Funds rate and suggests how these formulas can be used in the classroom. Utilizing Fed funds futures contracts, instructors can demonstrate how the market anticipates actions by the Federal Open Market Committee and can give assignments to students to have them calculate the probability of a rate change. This activity can enhance students’ understanding of financial markets, interest rates, and futures contracts and supply students with a useful tool to use in the business world.

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics Jan 2026

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter? Jan 2026

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter?

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We use a binary probit model to assess the impact of several changes in math prerequisites on student performance in an undergraduate business statistics course. While the initial prerequisites did not necessarily provide students with the necessary math skills, our study, the first to examine the effect of math prerequisite changes, shows that these changes were deleterious to student performance. Our results helped convince the College of Business to change the math prerequisite again beginning with the 2008/2009 academic year. Thus, this study is also the first to actually help strengthen math prerequisites and improve student performance in business statistics.

A Pedagogical Comparison Between The Use Of Instructor-Led In-Class Cases And Student-Led Out-Of-Class Cases

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

This study compares the attitudes and learning outcomes of students in sections of introductory corporate finance courses. The study was conducted at two different universities. Three sections of the course were taught using the lecture method supplemented with a student-led out-of-class case study project. Three other sections of the course were taught using lecture combined with an instructor-led in-class case study project. The students were given pre-tests and post-tests in each section to determine changes in attitudes and learning. Students in both types of course achieved similar learning outcomes. Students found the subject of finance more interesting when participating in …

Intoxicated With Raison D'Etat, Anej Korsika Jan 2026

Intoxicated With Raison D'Etat, Anej Korsika

Fast Capitalism

Advocates of mercantilism, economic doctrine that dominated Western Europe from 16th to late 18th century, argued that positive balance of trade is of quintessential importance for any successful economic policy. Prime responsibility of every state was thus taking care of imports never exceeding exports. From such a perspective trade was not something beneficial (as proponents of laissez-faire economy, namely Adam Smith, would later on argue) but rather a zero-sum game. Instead of cooperation, states had to compete with one another. Because there wasn’t any common denominator that could prove to be of mutual interest, the natural state of affairs between …

Risk, Return To Industry, And The Future Of Democracy, Lukas Szrot Jan 2026

Risk, Return To Industry, And The Future Of Democracy, Lukas Szrot

Fast Capitalism

Reflecting on 2020, I consider the possibility of the collapse of the United States, as well as the ways in which it has fallen short of representative and democratic promise. I argue that the spread of conspiratorial reason is symptomatic of the mistrust that has arisen from these failures. Drawing on naturalist, critical theory, and sociology of knowledge accounts of conspiratorial reason, I argue that such thinking is interest-bound, weaponizing mistrust, and is broadly appealing but ultimately disempowering, serving the ends of failed praxis and reification of power. I examine two possible sources of institutionalized mistrust: the "culture wars" thesis …

On Friday, September 21, 2018, news reports on Greek corporate media announced the death of a man who had allegedly attempted to rob a jewellery store. The media announcement was accompanied by video footage in which two civilians were shown violently attacking the alleged thief while the latter was attempting to escape the jewellery store. A little later, the alleged thief was announced dead. This is the case of Zak Kostopoulos who was lynched in his attempt to escape a jewellery shop where he had found shelter from a threat that, to this day, remains unknown. Zak was lynched literally …

The Rise Of The Robots: Technocapitalism And The Policing Of Race, Constantine Gidaris Jan 2026

The Rise Of The Robots: Technocapitalism And The Policing Of Race, Constantine Gidaris

Fast Capitalism

This article critically engages with the emergence of police robots in the United States, arguing that their inevitable foray into everyday policing will fuel existing issues of racial discrimination. Building on Luis Suarez-Villa's (2009) conceptualization of technocapitalism, I situate police robots within a framework of social domination that thrives not only on its connections to corporatism and militarism, but also on technocapitalist conditions that invariably exacerbate the oppressive dynamics of racist and discriminatory policing. Although police robots will make police work safer for officers (Sharkey 2008), I contend that they will be used by the police as weaponized machines of …

The Impact Of Premium Income And Claim Expenses On Property Insurance Underwriting Results, Debrina Vita Ferezagia, Marta Yuniar, Finisha S. Hardanto

Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to examine the influence of premium income and claim expenses on the underwriting outcomes of property insurance. Property insurance is a form of insurance that provides protection for property against potential hazards, including fire, theft, and damage caused by natural catastrophes. The data were analyzed utilizing IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The data indicates that both premium income and claim expenses have a substantial influence on underwriting results. However, it is important to note that only premium income has a substantial influence on underwriting performance, accounting for an effective contribution of 83.3%. The coefficient …

Human Capital And Development, Philippe Aghion, Ingvild Almås, Costas Meghir Jan 2026

Human Capital And Development, Philippe Aghion, Ingvild Almås, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Human capital is central to efforts to promote growth, convergence, and the elimination of poverty. Drawing on seminal macroeconomic frameworks by Nelson-Phelps, Lucas, and subsequent developments, alongside macro and microeconomic evidence, the chapter examines the role of human capital in driving innovation and growth, emphasizing how different types of human capital matter at different stages of development, and discussing obstacles to accumulation and evidence from policy interventions.

Do Monetary Policy Shocks Affect Co2 Emissions? Evidence From Brazil, Luccas Assis Attílio, João Ricardo Faria, Andre V. Mollick Jan 2026

Do Monetary Policy Shocks Affect Co2 Emissions? Evidence From Brazil, Luccas Assis Attílio, João Ricardo Faria, Andre V. Mollick

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether monetary policy shocks affect CO2 emissions over time in Brazil. We show that CO2 emissions decline persistently following contractionary monetary policy shocks. The relationship between monetary policy and CO2 emissions in Brazil is assessed through two channels: trade openness and exchange rates. The theoretical model illustrates how monetary policy affects the domestic economy through the real exchange rate. An application of a Global VAR (GVAR) to the Brazilian economy from 1996 to 2018 investigates the effects of monetary policy in Brazil (or in the U.S.) on real GDP and, subsequently, on CO2 emissions. A contractionary monetary …

Café Narcissism, Jamie Dangler, Mark P. Worrell Jan 2026

Café Narcissism, Jamie Dangler, Mark P. Worrell

Fast Capitalism

The 1979 Cortland Conference marked a decisive shift in the adventures of Telos by opening up a debate on narcissism that would pave the way for later contests that, in turn, symbolize in the eyes of many, the errant swerve of Marxism and post-Marxist critical theory. In what follows we examine the vibrant theoretical community at Cortland during the late-70s and early 80s, revisit the conference itself, and reflect on the narcissism concept and its relationship to anti-capitalist struggle in a way that is both attuned to debates surrounding the 1979 conference as well as its ongoing relevance for critical …

Absolutizing The Particular, Robert J. Antonio Jan 2026

Absolutizing The Particular, Robert J. Antonio

Fast Capitalism

From the late-1960s to the mid-1980s, Telos brought the Frankfurt School, Western Marxism, and other critical Continental thought to North America and the English speaking world; it was the critical theory organ of that era and best ever English language journal on the topic. Its left lean did not compromise its critical view of communist regimes and left-wing parties and thinkers. Its contribution with regard to critical theories, with Hegelian-Marxist roots, was so substantial and widely acknowledged that many former readers and, I expect, even some journal editors, who have advertised in Telos, during the last 25 years, did not …
