Three-Dimensional Crust And Mantle Structure Of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Willam L. Ellsworth, Robert Y. Koyanagi
Three-Dimensional Crust And Mantle Structure Of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Willam L. Ellsworth, Robert Y. Koyanagi
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Teleseismic P wave arrival times recorded by a dense network of seismograph stations located on Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, are inverted to determine lateral variations in crust and upper mantle structure to a depth of 70 km. The crustal structure is dominated by relatively high velocities within the central summit complex and along the two radial rift zones, compared with the nonrift flank of the volcano. Both the mean crustal velocity contrast between summit and nonrift flank and the distribution of velocities agree well with results from crustal refraction studies. Comparison of the velocity structure with Bouguer gravity anomalies over the …

Petrology Of The Alaskites Of The Boulder Batholith, Montana, Kenneth C. Malick
Theses and Dissertations
The Boulder batholith outcrops in the Northern Rookies of western Montana. It is exposed over an area of 5700 km^2 and extends about 112 km along the continental divide from Mullen Pass on the north to 32 km south of Butte. The Boulder batholith represents an invasion of the upper zones of the crust by a large volume of fluid granodioritic quartz monzonitic magma emplaced at the close of a main orogenic episode during late Cretaceous and Paleocene time.
Eight alaskite bodies were chosen for sampling from previous field experience and from geologic maps published by the U.S.O.S. Textural descriptions, …

Lower Mississippian Sedimentation In Northwestern Montana, Forest E. Haines
Doctoral Dissertations
"Thirty-three measured sections, nine with thin sections and insoluble residues, were studied to determine the depositional history of the Allan Mountain Limestone and the lower member of the Castle Reef Dolomite of the Madison Group in northwestern Montana.
The Allan Mountain base is a fossiliferous limestone, herein named the Brownback Gulch Member, which thickens and becomes cherty to the southwest where the section at Lone Butte resembles that of the Bridger Range Waulsortian-type reefs. A crinoidal lag deposit marks a dis- conformity at the top. In the overlying silty limestone member a thin black shale (Unit 1) grades into normal …
Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols
Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols
Doctoral Dissertations
"The dissertation area lies on the western flank of the Ozark uplift between Lebanon and Camdenton, Missouri. In the northwestern corner of the study area a portion of the Decaturville cryptoexplosive structure is exposed. The dominant structure outside the disturbed zone is a northwest-trending asymmetrical anticline with a subsidiary normal fault dipping southwest on the steeper southwest limb.
The area is mapped in considerable detail in order to describe subtle structural features. To overcome a problem of poor exposures, new key beds are defined which greatly increase structural control. Significant structures recognized as a result are the Dry Auglaize anticline, …

Doctoral Dissertations
"The dissertation represents a geologic study of an area bordering the Mediterranean Sea in northwestern Libya. About 1200 km2 were mapped and 28 stratigraphic sections were prepared.
The bedrock consists of 16 stratigraphic units of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age having a combined maximum thickness of about 750 meters. The oldest unit exposed, the Abu Shaybah Formation, is a redbed sequence of Triassic and Jurassic age. These beds are unconformably separated from Cretaceous carbonates (Garian Limestone, Ain Tobi Formation, and Gezzar Dolomite). These units in turn are overlain by the Miocene Al-Khums Formation. Younger Quaternary units consist of nearshore marine …
Geologic Factors Influencing Speleogenesis In The Capitan Reef Complex, New Mexico And Texas, David Henry Jagnow
Geologic Factors Influencing Speleogenesis In The Capitan Reef Complex, New Mexico And Texas, David Henry Jagnow
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the geologic factors that have influenced speleogenesis (origin of caves) in the Capitan reef complex (Permian) exposed along the northeast prong of the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico and Texas. This study of 52 caves included mapping caves, joints, and cross sections, determining stratigraphic position, generating joint rose diagrams, and photographing the geologic and hydrologic controls on speleogenesis.
Most Guadalupe caves are strongly controlled by vertical joints that parallel or are nearly perpendicular to the reef escarpment. East of Rattlesnake Canyon, caves generally develop along joint swarms that parallel the reef escarpment; …

Variation Among Populations Of The Troglobitic Amphipod Crustacean Crangonyx Antennatus Packard Living In Different Habitats I. Morphology, Gary W. Dickson
International Journal of Speleology
Populations of the troglobitic (i.e., obligatory cavernicole) amphipod Crangonyx antennatus living in two distinct aquatic habitats were examined for possible morphological variation. Collections were made seasonally for one year in six Lee Co., Virginia caves, three with mud-bottom pools and three with small gravel-bottom streams. Environmental parameters thought to influence population variation were recorded for each of the six caves. Body length of mature amphipods was found to be greater in the mud-bottom pool habitats, whereas stream amphipods possessed more first antennal segments per unit body length. Variation was also observed in integument coloration; stream amphipods were characterized by a …

Nitrobacter In Mammoth Cave, C. B. Fliermans, E. L. Schmidt
Nitrobacter In Mammoth Cave, C. B. Fliermans, E. L. Schmidt
International Journal of Speleology
Mammoth Cave, a large limestone cavern in Mammoth Cave National Park in the Central Kentucky karst, was first mined for saltpetre in 1808 and was a major source of nitrates used in the manufacture of gunpowder during the War of 1812. The mechanism of saltpetre formation is unknown, although hypotheses encompassing both biotic and abiotic functions have been suggested. Present studies were conducted in various saltpetre caves using species specific fluorescent antibodies in order to determine if the chemoautotroph, Nitrobacter, were present. Population densities and species distribution of Nitrobacter were studied in relation to chemical and physical parameters for …
A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima
A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.
A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The cobble and gravel sediments as well as an extensive belt of foredunes preserved in the ancient environment are evidence of this high …
Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In general six factors affect the occurence of groundwater; rainfall, topography, rock type, rock structurs, vegetation, and local evaporation.
Variation in even one of these can affect the potential yield of a bore or well, the groundwater salinity, and even whether any groundwater occurs at all.

Eight of the units have been formally named and described in earlier studies. Four of them, however, have not been a"~ previously named and formally described .a.nu assigned names in this study. Two other units are described, but because of their limited exposure, are not assigned a formal lithostratlgraphic name. The oldest sediment exposed in the county was deposited during the Paleocene and the …
Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas
Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas
Dissertations and Theses
Chlorine is thought to play a major role in the mobilization and concentration of base metals in the formation of ore deposits. The regional distribution of chlorine in the Idaho Batholith was studied to see if this could be related to mineralization or metallic provinces. One hundred forty-eight whole-rock samples, mineral separates, and standards were analyzed for chlorine by x-ray fluorescence.
The expected concentration of chlorine in the biotite fraction was not found. The chlorine was not significantly water leachable from the whole rock samples following normal grinding. The Idaho Batholith as a source for mineralizing chlorine was not established. …
Long-Distance Turbidite Correlations In The Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, William H. Hoyt
Long-Distance Turbidite Correlations In The Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, William H. Hoyt
Geology Theses and Dissertations
Few studies on modern abyssal plain turbidites have attempted to assess the lateral extent of individual units and few have therefore been able to provide any information on the evolution of turbidity deposits across long abyssal plain distances. In the 4755 m-deep Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, ten distinct lithologic units (six of these Iberian Peninsula-derived turbidites) were delineated in nine piston cores on the basis of stratigraphic position, thickness (range of 20 cm to greater than 500 cm), color, sediment type, sedimentary structures, x-ray mineralogy, and the ubiquitous presence of units in all abyssal plain and supplying canyon piston cores. In …
