Fracturation Et Karstification D'Un Massif: L'Exemple De L'Azerou El Kebir (Algérie Du Nord), P. E. Coiffait, Y. Quinif
International Journal of Speleology
The fracturation of the sub-autochthonous massif of the Azerou el Kebir is not fundamentally different from that of the adjoining allochthonous massif - where the structures are due to an Alpine phase, known as the Atlas phase. As with all fractures, karstification only exploits certain of them, without having any linkage to their statistical importance, caves have developed following fractures which are qualitatively important, but are poorly represented quantitatively. The study of the karstification therefore, confirms his complementary to the structural analysis in order to elucidate the technical problems of fracturation in the region.

In Constant temperature the troglobite beetles Aphaenops cerberus and pluto, Geotrechus orpheus and Speonomus diecki are aperiodically active. By periodogram analysis neither circadian nor ultradian or infradian periodic components can be found. Moreover there are no relevant correlations between the lengths of successive activity bursts and rest pauses. Consequently the activity patterns are stochasticly structured. In cases with constancy of activity respectively rest behaviour the probabilities for the transition from activity to rest and from rest to activity are computed using the Frequency histograms of lengths of activity bursts and rest pauses. The transition probability is time-invariant if the …

Optical analysis of thin slides of cave fromations carried out by a number of researchers showed a fine structure consisting of a succession of double layers (thichness less than a fe tens of micron). In each two layer unit, one is thicker, transparent and composed of an assembly of calcite needle shaped crystals oriented perpendicularly to the layer: the other layer is opaque, cryptocrystalline or amorphous. According to some C-14 datings of archaeological remains covered by the formations each couple of layers would correspond to one year. In order to check this hypothesis an experiment was set up in the …

Studies Of The Cave Crayfish, Orconectes Inermis Inermis Cope (Decapoda, Cambaridae). Part Iv: Mark-Recapture Procedures For Estimating Population Size And Movements Of Individuals, Horton H. Hobbs Iii
International Journal of Speleology
Several methods for permanently marking cavernicolous crayfishes were investigated prior to initiation of field work in Pless Cave, Lawrence County, Indiana. Internally injected ink complemented with external “painting” proved to be a most satisfactory tagging procedure. During the two-year study period 211 individuals of the troglobitic crayfish Orconectes inermis inermis Cope were marked; 96 tagged individuals were recaptured at least once, a 46% recapture rate. The population size was estimated to be 1586 +/- 79 (95% C.L.) over the 540 m subterranean stream study area and remained relatively stable during the period of 1970 to 1972. The home range of …
Sui Rhachomyces (Ascomycetes, Laboulbeniales) Parassiti Dei Duvalius Italiani (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trechini), W. Rossi
International Journal of Speleology
The systematic position, variability and distribution of the two species of Rhachomyces parasitic on Italian Duvalius are defined on the basis of several new findings. Rhachomyces stipitatus Thaxter was found in Liguria, central Italy, Sicily and Sardinia; its synonymy with R. capucinus Thaxter is confirmed and the ssp. pallidus Maire is considered of no systematic relevance. R. maublancii, whose position is regularized by a Latin validating diagnosis, was only found on the Alps and previous records in other countries are questioned.
Heat Flow And Heat Production Studies In North Dakota, Richard Scattoline
Heat Flow And Heat Production Studies In North Dakota, Richard Scattoline
Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-one new heat flow determinations in North Dakota range from 0.6 to 1.9 HFU. The majority of heat flow measurements were completed for southwestern North Dakota.
Heat flow measurements were made in both oil and water wells. Heat production data from basement rocks when used in conjunction with nearby heat flow values indicate that only two of six sites may be considered to be similar to Basin and Range type of heat flow. One site occurs in southwestern North Dakota in a region west of 103° W where no heat flow value is less than 1.5 HFU. The other site …
Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon
Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Over its 25 km. length the Norwood esker traverses two morphologically different areas, a northern section of kame, and a southern section of elongated drumlins. In the north the esker consists of single and multiple ridges: where multiple, the ridges are superimposed on a lower, broader, plateau-like base. In the south a high, steep-sided single ridge is present. In both areas, where single, the ridge splits locally into two narrower ridges which region a short distance downstream.
Internally, the esker contains mostly cross-laminated sands, tough-shaped and tabular sets of cross-bedded sands and gravel, and matrix-supported sandy gravels. The cross-laminated sands …

Texture, Fabric And Composition Of Fine-Grained Terrigenous Sediments From The Graneros Member Of The Mancos Shale, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, Anthony J. Skeryanc
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosity and permeability, radiography, x-ray diffraction (clay mineralogy), whole rock wet chemistry and organic analysis are used to examine the texture, fabric and composition of fine-grained terrigenous sediments from the Graneros Member of the Mancos Shale, San Juan Basin, New Mexico. Grain content is highly variable and determines the configuration of the fabric during compaction. A scale of the degree of parallel orientation is compared to grain content and reveals a decrease in parallelism with an increase in grain content. Grain content also affects permeability, thus controlling he degree of authigenic mineralization. Although clay composition …

The Parmo De Berlin, Colombia: A Study Of Water Resources In A Rural Andean Community, Daniel Bodo
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. The quality of surface waters, as revealed through analysis …

Megafossil Orientation Of Selected Silurian, Devonian, And Pleistocene Reefs Of North America, Lance T. Hodges
Megafossil Orientation Of Selected Silurian, Devonian, And Pleistocene Reefs Of North America, Lance T. Hodges
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The definition and identification of fossil reefs has been a continually vexing problem for paleoecologists. One approach to this problem is a study of fossil orientation in "reef" strata. Orientation of corals in exposures of reef limestones has been mentioned in the literature, but usually in a brief, non-quantitative way. Eight study sites were used to investigate the nature of structures described as reef-related. Two sites were selected from the Pleistocene Key Largo Limestone of Florida, probably a backreef facies. The Florida sites were used as fossil reef reference sites, because of their close relationship to modern Florida reefs. The …

Analysis Of An Interlobate Boundary In The Wisconsinan Drift Of Kalamazoo County And Adjacent Areas In Southwestern Michigan, Norman A. Lovan
Masters Theses
A detailed investigation of selected textural and mineralogical aspects of tills in southwestern Michigan is used to define an interlobe boundary relationship between the Wisconsinan ice of the Lake Michigan and Saginaw lobes. Bedrock underlying the study area contributed little to the bulk composition of the tils investigated. However, morainal development in the study area shows strong correlation with bedrock topography.
In a discussion of the deglaciation of Michigan and the study area, a history of morainal development is reviewed and attention is focused on the reentrant district located in Kalamazoo and neighboring counties. Attempts to delineate tills of the …
