Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne Jan 1984

Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Ruby Mountains-East Humboldt Range, one of the interior mountain groups of the Basin and Range Province, lies about midway between the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. After Blackwelder’s description in his review of glaciation in the western mountains, Sharp mapped and named the deposits of the Lamoille and Angel Lake glaciations and correlated them with early and late Wisconsin deposits of the Great Lakes area. The refinement of relative dating (RD) methods, the availability of air photos and modem topographic maps, and new road cuts have aided the restudy of these alpine glacial deposits and the basis for …

Miocene Burrows Of Extinct Bear Dogs: Indication Of Early Denning Behavior Of Large Mammalian Carnivores, Robert M. Hunt Jr., Xue Xiang-Xu, Joshua Kaufman

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Partial skeletons of four species of extinct carnivores have been found in their dens excavated in the floodplain of an early Miocene ephemeral braided stream at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska. Bear dogs (Carnivora: Amphicyonidae) were the principal occupants; their den dimensions and body size are similar to those of living wolves and hyenas. Discovery of this predator community extends the record of denning behavior of large mammalian carnivores to the early Miocene, 20 million years ago.

Relative Dating Techniques To Distinguish Late Pleistocene-Holocene Continental Sediments, William J. Wayne Jan 1984

Relative Dating Techniques To Distinguish Late Pleistocene-Holocene Continental Sediments, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Radiometric dating, particularly with 14C, provides ages for those Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments that contain datable materials. Standard stratigraphic and morphostratigraphic techniques of superposition, geomorphic position, partial overlap, and offlap provide relative chronology in many situations. The use of multiple relative dating (RD) techniques, developed for the study of glacial deposits, makes use of these techniques where possible, but depends heavily on the additional comparison of the results of surface processes that act continuously and more or less uniformly after accumulation is complete. For sediments at the surface that have not been buried, the most important of …

Monitoring Velocity Variations In The Crust Using Earthquake Doublets: An Application To The Calaveras Fault, California, G. Poupinet, W. L. Ellsworth, J. Frechet Jan 1984

Monitoring Velocity Variations In The Crust Using Earthquake Doublets: An Application To The Calaveras Fault, California, G. Poupinet, W. L. Ellsworth, J. Frechet

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We present a technique that greatly improves the precision in measuring temporal variations of crustal velocities using an earthquake doublet, or pair of microearthquakes that have nearly identical waveforms and the same hypocenter and magnitude but occur on different dates. We compute differencesin arrival times between seismograms recorded at the same station in the freqency domain by cross correlation of short windows of signal. A moving-window analysis of the entire seismograms, including the coda, gives δ(t), the difference in arrival times versus running time along the seismogram. The time resolution of the method is an order of magnitude better than …

Hydrochemical Data For The Truckee River Drainage System, California And Nevada, Larry V. Benson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Abstract

Surface-water samples were collected from the Truckee River drainage system during 1975, 1976, and 1981. Data resulting from chemical analyses of these samples, as well as certain other previously unpublished data, are tabulated in this report. The report contains the following hydrochemical data:

1. Chemical composition of 21 tributaries to Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River upstream from Farad, California (May and October 1971, and June 1972).

2. Chemical composition of the Truckee River at Tahoe City (January 1968-January 1975) and at Farad, California (January 1968-June 1980), and of the Little Truckee River upstream from Stampede Reservoir, California (January …

The Ashern Formation (Middle Devonian) In The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Frederick K. Lobdell Jan 1984

The Ashern Formation (Middle Devonian) In The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Frederick K. Lobdell

Theses and Dissertations

The Ashern Formation (Middle Devonian) is the basal unit of the Kaskaskia Sequence in North Dakota. It unconformably overlies the Interlake Formation (Silurian) and underlies, probably paraconformably, the Winnipegosis Formation (Middle Devonian). The Ashern is present in the northwestern one-half of the state, and attains a maximum thickness of 180 feet (55 meters) The Ashern Formation may be subdivided into a lower red member and an upper gray member. The latter directly overlies the Interlake Formation where the red member is absent. Both members are argillaceous, microcrystalline dolostones containing minor quartz silt. Anhydrite, present in both members, is much more …

Paleohydraulics Of Pleistocene Drainage Development Of The Souris, Des Lacs, And Moose Mountain Spillways, Saskatchewan And North Dakota, Mark L. Lord Jan 1984

Paleohydraulics Of Pleistocene Drainage Development Of The Souris, Des Lacs, And Moose Mountain Spillways, Saskatchewan And North Dakota, Mark L. Lord

Theses and Dissertations

Recent recognition of the rapid draining of numerous glacial lakes, including some in the Northern Plains, has revealed 'a need for further research concerning this process. Geomorphic interpretation of the Souris, Des Lacs, and Moose Mountain Valleys, and the gravel deposits in them, has resulted in the recognition of five phases in the development of the drainageways. Textural analyses and paleohydraulic methods were applied to the sediments associated with each phase to distinguish and characterize the discharges. Four of the five phases of development involved short-lived, high velocity (>4 m/s) discharges resulting from the rapid draining of glacial lakes; …

Depositional Cycles And Coral Distribution, Mission Canyon And Charles Formations, Madison Group (Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Douglas L. Waters Jan 1984

Depositional Cycles And Coral Distribution, Mission Canyon And Charles Formations, Madison Group (Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Douglas L. Waters

Theses and Dissertations

The distribution of corals, other fossils, and rock types of the Madison Group in the Williston Basin were studied in 29 cores (involving over 6,200 feet of core) from the Bottineau, Tilston, Frobisher-Alida, and Ratcliffe intervals in the western half of North Dakota. Occurrence of rock types, corals, and other fossils (brachiopods, bryozoans, red algae, and gastropods) of the Mission Canyon and lower Charles Formations were plotted in three cross-sections against the informal marker-defined intervals (Tilston, Frobisher-Alida, and Ratcliffe), as identified from well logs. Distribution and abundance of corals in nine of the more extensive cores were related to interpreted …

Heavy Minerals Of The Cretaceous Hell Creek And Paleocene Ludlow Formations Of Slope And Bowman Counties, North Dakota, Robert A. Farris Jan 1984

Heavy Minerals Of The Cretaceous Hell Creek And Paleocene Ludlow Formations Of Slope And Bowman Counties, North Dakota, Robert A. Farris

Theses and Dissertations

The Cretaceous Hell Creek and Paleocene Ludlow Formations of southwestern North Dakota are nonmarine sediments of alluvial origin. The heavy minerals of these formations were specifically studied to determine the source rock types and their provenance, and generally assess the diagenetic processes which affected the heavy minerals.

The heavy minerals include zircon, rutile, tourmaline, garnet, ilmenite, spinel, apatite, epidote, sphene, pyroxene, dolomite, biotite, andalusite, pyrite, monazite, and barite. Most of the heavy minerals have angular shapes, indicating one cycle of erosion and deposition.

The heavy mineral percentages of the concretions and surrounding sediments were compared within and between the Hell …

Investigations And Research In Nevada By The Water Resources Division, U. S. Geological Survey, 1982-83, Terry Katzer, Otto Moosburner, William D. Nichols

Publications (WR)

The Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, is charged with (1) maintaining a hydrologic network in Nevada that provides information on the status of the State's water resources and (2) engaging in technical water-resources investigations that have a high degree of transferability. To meet these broad objections, 26 projects were active in Nevada during fiscal year 1982 in cooperation with 36 Federal, State, and local agencies. Total funds were $3,319,455, of which State and local cooperative funding amounted to $741,500 and Federal funding (comprised of Geological Survey Federal and cooperative programs plus funds from six other Federal agencies) amounted to …

Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz Jan 1984

Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz

Masters Theses

Sediment oxygen demand is an important factor in determining dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams and rivers subjected to sewage effluents and other sources of organic pollution. Resuspension of sediments during bottom-scouring after periods of heavy precipitation exerts an immediate and increased oxygen demand on the water and is expected to decrease sediment oxygen demand at the site.

Sediment samples were collected monthly from April through November, 1983 from three small streams subjected to sources of organic pollution. The samples collected were arbitrarily categorized into wet and dry period samples based on the total precipitation between collection dates. Sediment oxygen demand …

Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose Dec 1983

Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

Observations of the March 19, 1982 ash eruption of Mount St. Helens, made by the National Weather Service (NWS, Portland, Oregon) on 5-cm radar, were used to estimate the volume of the ash cloud (2000 ±500 km3), the concentration of ash (0.2–0.6 g m−3). and the total mass of ash erupted (3–10×1011 g). The position of the cloud was also tracked by radar. Particle sizes in the ash cloud were estimated from settling velocities suggested by decreases in maximum ash cloud height with time as it moved away from the volcano. The March 19, 1982 …

Effect Of Irrigation On Corn, Soybeans And Alfalfa Yields In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock Dec 1983

Effect Of Irrigation On Corn, Soybeans And Alfalfa Yields In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock

Soil Science News and Views

Irrigation is not widely used in Kentucky for two reasons: 1) high average yearly rainfall, and 2) lack of easily accessible and dependable water sources. However, even with the high yearly rainfall, droughts do occur during the growing season. According to past history, they are more likely to occur in West Kentucky than Central Kentucky and least likely to occur in East Kentucky.

A Magnetic And Resistivity Survey Of Cork Street Landfill, Stanislaw Leja Dec 1983

A Magnetic And Resistivity Survey Of Cork Street Landfill, Stanislaw Leja

Masters Theses

Geophysical techniques such as magnetic and electrical resistivity methods are being increasingly applied in investigations of landfills.

For this survey, measurements of the intensity of the earth's magnetic field were taken at regular intervals along traverses. Resistivity readings were taken at selected intervals along the same or very similar traverses. Additional resistivity depth measurements or soundings were obtained at selected points in and around the landfill.

Profiles were analyzed for individual dump structures and for overall magnetic and resistivity response. Contour maps were drawn from the measurements at the site to depict broad trends or patterns. Deeper subsurface geology was …

Environment Of Deposition Of The A-1 Carbonate, Salina Group, Michigan Basin, Barbara June Leonard Dec 1983

Environment Of Deposition Of The A-1 Carbonate, Salina Group, Michigan Basin, Barbara June Leonard

Masters Theses

The lower Salina Group of the Michigan Basin is composed of a cyclic succession of carbonate and evaporite units. The lowermost Salina unit is the A-1 unit which consists of a lower A-1 evaporite and an upper A-1 carbonate. The A-1 unit is underlain by Niagara Group carbonates. The transition from Niagaran carbonates to A-1 evaporite to A-1 carbonate has not been thoroughly understood and previous models have not satisfied some of the evidence. This paper sets forth the hypothesis that the A-1 carbonate was deposited in a non-marine lake environment rather than an isolated marine environment. Findings supporting this …

The Geology Of The Southern Bull Mountain Area, Jefferson County, Montana, Michael Edward Streeter Dec 1983

The Geology Of The Southern Bull Mountain Area, Jefferson County, Montana, Michael Edward Streeter

Masters Theses

The Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary Laramide orogeny was responsible for the northward tilting of the pre-Eocene rocks of the area. The Late Cretaceous deposition of the Elkhorn Mountains Volcanics resulted in the volcanic-Madison Group unconformity. Late Cretaceous faulting took place probably in response to caldera subsidence. Laramide uplift erosion and downstream transport resulted in the deposition of the Conrow Creek conglomerate and debris flows over the Lodgepole Limestone. Block faulting took place in response to regional extension probably during Late Oligocene-Early Miocene time resulting in the formation of the St. Paul's Gulch, Golden Sunlight, and Boulder basin faults. The Oligocene Dunbar …

Returning Pik Land To Grain Production, Wilbur W. Frye Nov 1983

Returning Pik Land To Grain Production, Wilbur W. Frye

Soil Science News and Views

With the end of the 1983 PIK program, much of the acreage that was in the program will be returned to grain production. Farmers who planted cover crops on their PIK fields in 1983 and who plan to return them to grain production in 1984 will be faced with deciding whether to use no-tillage or conventional tillage. The cover crops will provide mulch for no-tillage crops which may be an asset but can contribute to problems as well. Also, weed problems may be worse on PIK land and more difficult to control with no-tillage than with conventional tillage. The decision …

Fertilization Management In Double Cropping, John H. Grove Oct 1983

Fertilization Management In Double Cropping, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Double crop systems are being widely adopted by grain and silage producers in Kentucky. The wheat-soybean grain intensive system accounts for nearly 750,000 acres of cropland in the state each year. Alternative silage systems for beef and/or dairy producers involve a fall seeded small grain (wheat, barley, triticale) that is harvested at an immature stage of growth. Immediately afterward a crop for silage (corn, grain sorghum) or grain (soybean, grain sorghum) is planted. When reduced and no-tillage management practices are used the timeliness of planting is improved and losses of surface soil moisture are minimized as the second crop starts …

Megaclasts In Alluvial Fills From The Ogallala Group (Miocene), Banner, Kimball, And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Oct 1983

Megaclasts In Alluvial Fills From The Ogallala Group (Miocene), Banner, Kimball, And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Locally derived blocks and boulders (megaclasts) occur in conglomerate and in sand and gravel fills of channels in the Ogallala Group (Miocene) at localities in Banner, Kimball, and Morrill counties in western Nebraska. Some of the megaclasts are up to one or more orders of magnitude larger than the largest distantly derived grains in the sediments surrounding them. A number of these megaclasts probably moved downslope by mass wasting from outcrop sites on paleovalley sides and were later transported by running water. Other blocks and boulders were eroded by streams from bedrock along channel sides and then were transported by …

The Effect Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On The Fecundity Of Acartia Tonsa (Calanoid Copepoda), Juanita Y. Grabarczyk Oct 1983

The Effect Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On The Fecundity Of Acartia Tonsa (Calanoid Copepoda), Juanita Y. Grabarczyk

OES Theses and Dissertations

The concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAHs) were determined for several stations in the Elizabeth River. Thirteen PNAHs of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAHs were present in the particulate fraction. The concentrations ranged from 10.0 ng/1 to 1000 ng/1. Ten of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAH were present in the dissolved phase. Concentrations ranged from 2.0 ng/1 to 100 ng/1.

The environmental PNAHs concentrations were used to determine test concentrations. Bioassays were conducted to determine the effects of indigenous concentrations of seven predominant PNAHs (0.01 mg/1 to 2.4 mg/1 concentrations) on the fecundity of Acartia tonsa (calanoid Copepoda). …

Water Requirement For Coal Slurry Transportation, David T. Kao, Sandra L. Rusher Sep 1983

Water Requirement For Coal Slurry Transportation, David T. Kao, Sandra L. Rusher

KWRRI Research Reports

The amount of water required for coal slurry transportation is a function of the coal properties and the magnitude of coal movement. The pipeline system characteristics and the method of slurry preparation also affects the overall water requirement of the system. In the present study methodologies are developed based on reported and modified coal slurry flow correlation equations to determine the quantity of water needed under various coal transport and flow conditions. Auxiliary water requirements including start-up and flushing water storage; related evaporation and seepage losses are also included. A computer program and several monographs are presented to provide a …
