Integration Of Channel And Floodplain Suites, Developmental Sequence And Lateral Relations Of Alluvial Paleosols, Thomas M. Bown, Mary J. Krause
Integration Of Channel And Floodplain Suites, Developmental Sequence And Lateral Relations Of Alluvial Paleosols, Thomas M. Bown, Mary J. Krause
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The lower Eocene Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin, northwest Wyoming, consists of about 770 m of alluvial rocks that exhibit extensive mechanical and geochemical modifications resulting from Eocene pedogenesis. Willwood paleosols vary considerably in their relative degrees of maturity; maturity is defined as stage of development as a function of the amount of time required to form. Five arbitrary stages are proposed to distinguish these soils of different maturities in the Willwood Formation. Stage 1 soils, the least mature, are entisols; stage 2 and stage 3 soils are intermediate in maturity and are probably alfisols; and stage 4 and …

45. Clay Mineralogy Of The Lower Cretaceous Deep-Sea Fan, Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 603, Lower Continental Rise Off North Carolina, Mary Anne Holmes
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The clay mineralogy of Lower Cretaceous deep-sea fan sediment in the western North Atlantic is dominated by smectite in most intervals, and by illite in samples from intervals of high sand input. Different intervals of high sand input are enriched in kaolinite. Kaolinite and illite levels do not correlate in this sediment, indicating that the input of each clay type was independent and represents either a different provenance or a different depositional mode. The latter hypothesis is preferred because equivalent, continental strata have clay mineral suites dominated in most cases by kaolinite, and in other cases by illite. Only marine …
Evolution Of The Aeluroid Camivora: Significance Of Auditory Structure In The Nimravid Cat Dinictis, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Evolution Of The Aeluroid Camivora: Significance Of Auditory Structure In The Nimravid Cat Dinictis, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Evolutionary lineages among living and extinct Carnivora can be identified by a diagnostic pattern of ontogenetic elements forming the auditory bulla enclosing the middle ear, best observed in newborn and juvenile animals. However, in the fossil record, the delicate unfused bulla parts of very young carnivorans are rarely preserved. Thus bulla composition in extinct lineages is difficult to determine unless juveniles with well-preserved auditory bullae can be found. Discovery in 1981 of an intact cranium of a juvenile aeluroid carnivoran (Dinictis) from the White River Group (Oligocene) in northwestern Nebraska has resulted in an improved understanding of bulla …

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus
Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.
After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.
Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane
Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The loss of arable farmland from soil erosion, waterlogging and salinity is a severe problem on some Western Australian farms.
When the arable land comprises only 40 per cent of the total area within the Mogumber Soil Conservation District, this loss is a real cause for concern. So too is the resulting damage to roads, siltation of railway culverts, and deaths of roadside trees from rising saline watertables.
However, drainage, contour and other works undertaken by the Mogumber Soil Conservation District have halted this degredation. Badly eroded areas that were fenced off now have a satisfactory ground cover. A wheat …
Effect Of Agronomic Practices On Wheat Protein Levels, M G. Mason
Effect Of Agronomic Practices On Wheat Protein Levels, M G. Mason
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
High grain protein levels are preferred for many end-uses of wheat. However, there has been little or no incentive for farmers to use practices which would increase protein levels, because wheat payments are made without a price differential for proteinlevel, except where wheat could qualify for the Australian Hard grade.
Acid Rain: A Problem On Agronomic Crops And Soils In Kentucky??, John H. Grove
Acid Rain: A Problem On Agronomic Crops And Soils In Kentucky??, John H. Grove
Soil Science News and Views
Although the general issue of atmospheric pollution is complex, the image of beautiful lakes without aquatic life has focussed public attention on the acidity, or pH, of rainfall. Kentucky does receive acid rain (see map). This discussion will seek to define atmospheric acidity and its deposition and describe reported effects on agronomic crops and soils.
