Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Glacial Lake Souris, North Dakota: Effects Of A Glacial-Lake Outburst, Mark L. Lord
Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Glacial Lake Souris, North Dakota: Effects Of A Glacial-Lake Outburst, Mark L. Lord
Theses and Dissertations
Glacial-lake outbursts commonly occurred along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet as ice-marginal lakes suddenly drained. These outbursts released huge volumes of water with tremendous erosive potential, forming large trench-shape channels. Although glacial-lake spillways have been studied in detail, the effects of outbursts on downstream lakes have not. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of the Glacial Lake Regina outburst on the lake that received the flows, Glacial Lake Souris.
Glacial Lake Souris, located in what is now North Dakota, was inundated by about 74 km3 of water carrying 25 km3 of sediment from …
Structural Geology Of The Northern Galice Formation, Western Klamath Mountains, Oregon And California, F. Ross Jones
Structural Geology Of The Northern Galice Formation, Western Klamath Mountains, Oregon And California, F. Ross Jones
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The Galice Formation is a thick, turbiditic flysch sequence that depositionally overlies the Josephine ophiolite in the western Klamath Mountains of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. The Josephine ophiolite and Galice have been interpreted as the basement and sedimentary cover of a Late Jurassic back-arc basin that opened proximal to the continental margin. During the Nevadan orogeny (ca. 151-147 Ma), the ophiolite and overlying Galice sediments were thrust eastward beneath the continental margin along the regional Orleans fault. Two distinct Nevadan deformational phases are recognized in the Galice – an initial D1 or "main-phase" deformation and a later brittle deformation …

Sedimentology, Structure, And Geochemistry Of The Galice Formation: Sediment Fill Of A Back-Arc Basin And Island Arc In The Western Klamath Mountains, Rosann Park-Jones
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The western Jurassic belt of the Klamath Mountains is an ideal locale for the study of ophiolite genesis, island arc development, and study of flysch deposition from a nearby eroding island arc and continental margin. Closure and imbrication of an inferred back-arc basin coincided with the Late Jurassic Nevadan orogeny (ca 150 Ma). The Galice Formation is the youngest formation involved in the Nevadan orogeny (Lanphere et al., 1968). In the type section in southwestern Oregon, the Galice structurally overlies the Rogue Formation volcaniclastics. The Rogue Formation has been previously interpreted as an island arc assemblage (Garcia, 1979). The type …

A Statistical Evaluation Of Formation Disturbance Produced By Well-Casing Installation Methods, Roger H. Morin, Denis R. Leblanc, Warren E. Teasdalea
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Water-resources investigations concerned with contaminant transport through aquifers comprised of very loose, unconsolidated sediments have shown that small-scale variations in aquifer characteristics can significantly affect solute transport and dispersion. Various sampling and borehole-logging techniques have been integrated into these studies to detect and measure detailed formation changes through casing or well screen along the length of the borehole. Commonly, measurement accuracy and resolution have been limited by a borehole environment consisting of an annulus of disturbed sediments produced by the casinginstallation method.

Stratigraphy, Paleontology And Paleobiogeography Of Lower Vertebrates From The Cedar Mountain Formation (Lower Cretaceous), Emery County, Utah, Michael L. Pomes
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Where present, the basal Buckhorn Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Aptian-Albian) separates the overlying main member from the mudrocks of the Tithonian Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation. Without the Buckhorn, the mudrocks of the Cedar Mountain Formation appear to grade into those of the Morrison, so one is apt to call the entire sequence Morrison. Where the Cedar Mountain Formation appears to grade in to the Morrison, use of lower vertebrate teeth can provide an additional means to separate the Morrison from the Cedar Mountain Formation. Lower vertebrate teeth and associated microvertebrate remains (eggshell and bone fragments) …
Pressure-Solution Features Of The Birdbear Formation (Devonian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, James C. Collier
Pressure-Solution Features Of The Birdbear Formation (Devonian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, James C. Collier
Theses and Dissertations
Pressure-solution features of the Birdbear Formation (Devonian), Williston Basin, North Dakota were the subject of this study. In the area studied, the Birdbear Formation is primarily a limestone with mud-rich textures. The investigation contained three principal phases: 1) a study of the parameters influencing the size and shape of the pressure-solution response, 2) the process of reactate dolomite formation and its relation to calcite neomorphism, and 3) the relation of neomorphism to pressure solution.
The principal pressure-solution response types are stylolites and solution seams. Stylolites are pressure-solution seams with a tooth-and-socket, serrated shape. Pressure-solution seams are gently undulating to smooth …
Hydrogeology Of The Hillsboro Landfill, Hillsboro, North Dakota, Jeffrey D. Maletzke
Hydrogeology Of The Hillsboro Landfill, Hillsboro, North Dakota, Jeffrey D. Maletzke
Theses and Dissertations
Landfills are the primary means for land disposal of solid wastes, and as such, they represent potential sources of groundwater contamination. This potential for contamination is exemplified by the Hillsboro landfill, which was emplaced above the Hillsboro aquifer, within permeable surface materials, and under shallow water-table conditions. Burial of refuse in trenches 15-feet (4.57 m) deep ensure that at least portions of the refuse are below the water table, which varied from 5.4 to 13.2 feet (1.7 to 4.0 m) below the surface. Concern over these factors led to the present study.
Subsurface conditions were investigated by electrical, earth-resistivity surveying. …
Macropaleontology Of The Gunn Member, Stony Mountain Formation (Upper Ordovician), Manitoba And North Dakota, Frederick K. Lobdell
Macropaleontology Of The Gunn Member, Stony Mountain Formation (Upper Ordovician), Manitoba And North Dakota, Frederick K. Lobdell
Theses and Dissertations
The Gunn Member of the Stony Mountain Formation has long been known to contain an abundant and diverse fauna. This study was undertaken to identify and describe the macrofauna of the Gunn Member in the subsurface of North Dakota, previously neglected.
As a necessary first step, collections of fossils from outcrop were examined and identified. With the outcrop fauna serving as a reference collection, twenty cores from the North Dakota subsurface were examined, described, and their fossils sampled. Fossil and sediment samples were washed and sieved and the residues were picked for microscopic representatives of phyla usually considered to be …
Rock Slope Stability Studies In Siskiyou National Forest, Greg Visconty
Rock Slope Stability Studies In Siskiyou National Forest, Greg Visconty
Dissertations and Theses
The line mapping method of Piteau and Martin (1977) was tested on two different rock type road cuts in the Siskiyou National Forest, and was found to be an efficient means of collecting geological data for rock slope stability analysis. The unbiased approach of this method calls for close scrutiny of the outcrops in question, covering more ground than other methods in less time. In turn, this close attention to every crack in the outcrop reveals more about the stability of the slope, and can reveal hidden hazards of rock fall.
The supportive systems for analyzing the data - stereonets …

Metasomatism Between Amphibolite And Metaultramafic Rocks During Upper Amphibolite Facies Metamorphism, Tobacco Root Mountains, Southwest Montana, William Robert Mcculloch
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to characterize the metasomatism that has taken place as a result of the chemical incompatibility between mafic and metaultramafic bulk compositions during high-grade regional metamorphism in the Tobacco Root Mountains, southwest Montana. Metasomatism of these rocks took place by both diffusionand infiltration-dominated processes. The result of these processes are characterized mineralogically and geochemically in the rocks.
Interbasin Water Transfers: An Appropriate Management Practice For The Great Lakes?, David M. Krentz
Interbasin Water Transfers: An Appropriate Management Practice For The Great Lakes?, David M. Krentz
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Regional water deficiencies exist in North America, and proposals have been advanced to ‘correct’ these by transferring water from regions where it is relatively abundant to regions where it is relatively scarce. Many of these proposals identify the Great Lakes as either a potential source of the water, or as a ‘distribution centre’ into which water may be transferred and subsequently removed to regions experiencing deficiencies. Although the Great Lakes contain a very large amount of fresh water, most of it is required in place, and so many not be removed. The Great Lakes Basin is heavily populated and highly …

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigations In The Eastern Wheatbelt 2. Merredin Catchment, Richard J. George Dr, P W C Frantom
Resource management technical reports
Saline groundwater occurs within twelve metres of the surface throughout the valley of the Merredin catchment. Saline groundwater occurs within deep sediments deposited in the valley and deeply-weathered bedrock materials. Rapid groundwater recharge appears to be taking place in sandy-textured soils high in the landscape and directly into the Cainozoic sediments in the valley floor. Water-tables are rising at approximately ten centimetres each year in the upper catchment area.

Oligocene Calcareous-Nannofossil Biostratigraphy From Leg 101, Site 628, Little Bahama Bank Slope, Michael J. Moran, David K. Watkins
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Drilling at Hole 628A, Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program, recovered a thick, relatively complete Oligocene section of nannofossil-foraminifer chalk and ooze. Sediments from Cores 101-628A-16H through 101-628A-29X were examined using the light microscope to provide information about biostratigraphy of calcareous nannofossils. Several authors noted a problem in distinguishing the first appearance of species within the Sphenolithus predistentus-S. ciperoensis lineage of the mid-Oligocene, particularly Sphenolithus ciperoensis, because of the gradual evolution of its members. Successful separation of species in this lineage is critical for accurately dating relative age of mid- and upper-Oligocene nannofossil sediments. Length and taper of …

Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered Albian through Holocene sediments from a variety of carbonate depositional environments. Data from four microplanktonic groups (calcareous nannofossils, planktonic foraminifers, radiolarians, and dinoflagellates) and four benthic groups (larger foraminifers, smaller benthic foraminifers, ostracodes, and sponge spicules) yield a biostratigraphic and paleoecologic framework for these varied sediments. Winnowed, skeletal-planktonic foraminiferal packstones and grainstones from the central Straits of Florida (Site 626) reflect a late Oligocene to Holocene history of sporadic sedimentation greatly influenced by strong bottom-current activity. Neogene to Quaternary sediments from two carbonate-slope transects (Sites 627 to 633) indicate significant slope accretion …

Pliocene-Pleistocene Variations In Aragonite Content And Planktonic Oxygen-Isotope Record In Bahamian Periplatform Ooze, Hole 633a, André W. Droxler, Christopher H. Bruce, William W. Sager, David K. Watkins
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Hole 633A was drilled in the southern part of Exuma Sound on the toe-of-slope of the southeastern part of Great Bahama Bank during ODP Leg 101. The top 55 m, collected as a suite of six approximately 9.5-m-long hydraulic piston cores, represents a Pliocene-Pleistocene sequence of periplatform carbonate ooze, a mixture of pelagic calcite (foraminifer and coccolith tests), some pelagic aragonite (pteropod tests), and bank-derived fine aragonite and magnesian calcite. A 1.6-m.y.-long hiatus was identified at 43.75 mbsf using calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy.
The 43.75-m-thick periplatform sequence above the hiatus is a complete late Pliocene-Quaternary record of the past …
