Freshwater Imperative - Executive Summary, Long Term Ecological Research Network
Freshwater Imperative - Executive Summary, Long Term Ecological Research Network
Long Term Ecological Research Network
Fresh water is a strategic resource in a rapidly changing world. It is a source of energy, an avenue of transportation, habitat for a myriad of organisms, and essential for life. Fresh water structures the physical landscape, is a central feature of climate, and exerts major influences on economic growth and demographic patterns. Yet, as the human population increases, more and more demands are placed on freshwater ecosystems. Already, sufficient clean water and healthy aquatic habitats have become a rare natural resource.
Understanding the abilities and limits of freshwater ecosystems to respond to human-generated pressures has become vital to long-term …
Initial Transgressive Phase Of Leg 144 Guyots: Evidence Of Extreme Sulfate Reduction, Bjørn Buchardt, Mary Anne Holmes
Initial Transgressive Phase Of Leg 144 Guyots: Evidence Of Extreme Sulfate Reduction, Bjørn Buchardt, Mary Anne Holmes
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The initial transgressive phase at the Leg 144 Guyots is characterized by a typical association of sedimentary facies (from bottom to top): in situ weathered volcanic rocks; variegated clays, partly pyritic; gray clay, pyritic, homogeneous, or mottled; black clay, peaty, laminated, or bioturbated; and marine argillaceous limestone. Site 877 at Wodejebato Guyot represents the typical development of the initial transgressive phase. The black clay is rich in organic carbon (up to 40%) and sulfur (up to 25%). The organic matter is dominantly of terrestrial origin, but it has a significant marine, algal input. The variegated clays consist of a red, …

Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy And Age Estimates For The Leisey Shell Pit Faunas, Hillsborough County, Florida, Douglas S. Jones, Paul A. Mueller, Teresa Acosta, Robert Duncan Shuster
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
The vertebrate fauna of the Leisey Shell Pit near Tampa Bay, Florida, represents one of the more significant lrvingtonian mammalian faunas of North America. The fossil vertebrates occur in thin bone beds bounded above and below by massive shell beds containing a rich invertebrate ( chiefly molluscan) fauna. Debate has arisen concerning the precise age of the faunas at Leisey. Although generally agreed to be Pleistocene, estimates based upon vertebrate biostratigraphy suggest a somewhat older age than do estimates based upon molluscan biostratigraphy. To help resolve this controvefliy, 87Sr/86Sr ratios were determined on molluscan shells throughout the …

Dissociation Quotients Of Succinic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 225°C, Richard Kettler, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski
Dissociation Quotients Of Succinic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 225°C, Richard Kettler, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The first and second molal dissociation quotients of succinic acid were measured potentiometrically with a hydrogen-electrode, concentration cell. These measurements were carried out from 0 to 225"C over 25 ° intervals at five ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCl). The dissociation quotients from this and two other studies were combined and treated with empirical equations to yield the following thermodynamic quantities for the first acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C: logK1a = -4.210±0.003; Δ H1̊a = 2.9±0.2 kJ-mol - 1 ; ΔS1̊a = -71±1 J-mol - 1 -K -1; and ΔCp̊,1a = -98±3 …
Stratigraphy And Sediment Accumulation Patterns Of The Upper Cenozoic Pelagic Carbonate Caps Of Guyots In The Northwestern Pacific Ocean, David K. Watkins, Paul N. Pearson, Elisabetta Erba, Frank R. Rack, Isabella Premoli Silva, Horst W. Bohrmann, Julianna Fenner, Peter R.N. Hobbs
Stratigraphy And Sediment Accumulation Patterns Of The Upper Cenozoic Pelagic Carbonate Caps Of Guyots In The Northwestern Pacific Ocean, David K. Watkins, Paul N. Pearson, Elisabetta Erba, Frank R. Rack, Isabella Premoli Silva, Horst W. Bohrmann, Julianna Fenner, Peter R.N. Hobbs
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Many of the guyots of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean are capped by sequences of uncemented pelagic carbonate. Examination of three of these pelagic caps from Limalok, Lo-En, and Wodejebato guyots in the Marshall Islands indicates that sediment accumulation throughout the late Paleogene and late Cenozoic was characterized by episodes of deposition during the earliest Miocene, late early to early middle Miocene, late middle Miocene, mid-Pliocene, and Quaternary, separated by periods of little or no accumulation. The Miocene record consists of extensively winnowed foraminifer oozes, which suggest relatively energetic currents in the intermediate waters. The Pliocene and Quaternary sequences contain finer …

Campanian Dwarf Calcareous Nannofossils From Wodejebato Guyot, Elisabetta Erba, David K. Watkins, Jörg Mutterlose
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Calcareous nannofossils occur in lagoonal sediments recovered from Sites 873, 874, and 877 drilled on Wodejebato Guyot in the central Pacific Ocean. Nannofloras are present only in a few layers, from which several smear slides were prepared. All the specimens were counted, and the relative abundance of taxa was computed as percentages. Assemblages are characterized by excellent preservation, very high diversity (= number of taxa), but extremely low abundance. Both diversity and abundance decrease from the inner perimeter ridge along the northern edge of the atoll (Sites 877 and 874) to the inner lagoon (Site 873), but the assemblage composition …

Birds Of The Platte, Eileen M. Kirsch
Birds Of The Platte, Eileen M. Kirsch
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Gary Lingle has done an outstanding job compiling information to make birding the Central Platte River and Rainwater Basin area of Nebraska easier and more rewarding. The book was not designed to replace a field guide. Rather, it provides maps, general information about the area, when and where birds can be seen, and likelihood of viewing each of 300 bird species possible. Sprinkled throughout the book are drawings by William S. Whitney and Ernest V. Ochsner that depict the structural simplicity of the prairie and the diversity of its wildlife. The writing style is personal and unpretentious, and the text …
19. Pedogenic Alteration Of Basalts Recovered During Leg 144, Mary Anne Holmes
19. Pedogenic Alteration Of Basalts Recovered During Leg 144, Mary Anne Holmes
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Basalts erupted to form the atolls and guyots of the Western Pacific have been altered in various ways, ranging from hydrothermal alteration to subaerial weathering by meteoric waters in a tropical environment. Subaerial weathering has been moderate to extreme. Moderate subaerial weathering is expressed by dissolution or replacement of primary minerals (olivine, pyroxenes, plagioclase feldspar) and alteration of glassy or aphanitic matrix to clay minerals, goethite, and hematite. The clay minerals are kaolinite or a brown smectite. Kaolinite concentrations decrease downhole and smectite concentrations increase. Although primary minerals are generally not preserved, primary structures, such as vesicles (generally filled by …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Outcrop of the oldest Cretaceous sequence in the Giralia Anticline and the Giralia No. 1 well, penetrating the same sequence, are described and biostratigraphically assessed in detail. The Cretaceous rocks lie on an erosion surface cut into Permian strata. A 10 m thick basal sand unit, the Birdrong Sandstone, is overlain by 56 m of carbonaceous siltstone-mudstone (Muderong Shale). The Birdrong Sandstone in the anticline belongs to the Muderongia australis Zone of late Hauterivian-Barremian age, as does the lower part of the Muderong Shale. The age of the upper Muderong Shale is uncertain, as is the age of a 10 …

Foreshock Sequence Of The 1992 Landers, California, Earthquake And Its Implications For Earthquake Nucleation, Douglas A. Dodge, Gregory C. Beroza, W. L. Ellsworth
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The June 28, 1992, Landers, California, earthquake(Mw=7.3) was preceded for about 7 hours by a foreshock sequence consisting of at least 28 events. In this study we examine the geometry and temporal development of the foreshocks using high-precision locations based on cross correlation of waveforms recorded at nearby stations. By aligning waveforms, rather than trying to obtain travel time picks for each event independently, we are able to improve the timing accuracy greatly and to make very accurate travel time picks even for emergent arrivals. We perform a joint relocation using the improved travel times and reduce the …
Kinetics Of Pressure Solution At Halite-Silica Interfaces And Intergranular Clay Films, Stephen H. Hickman, Brian Evans
Kinetics Of Pressure Solution At Halite-Silica Interfaces And Intergranular Clay Films, Stephen H. Hickman, Brian Evans
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Pressure solution is widely regarded as a potentially important deformation
mechanism along crustal faults and during a diagenesis, yet the mechanisms and kinetics of this process remain highly controversial. To better understand the fundamental factors controlling the rates of pressure solution at the grain-to-grain scale, we conducted experiments in which convex halite lenses were pressed against fiats of fused silica in brine. Fluid pressures were maintained at 0.1 MPa; temperatures and mean contact normal stresses ranged from 8.3 ° to 90.2 °C and 0.5 to 13.5 MPa, respectively. The geometry and growth rate of the contact spot between the two …
Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid
Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid
Theses : Honours
This study was conducted to review effective design criteria for constructed wetlaads treating urban stormwater and to assess the design features of local constructed wetlands in relation to the theoretically ideal design features. The study was generated out of Water Authority of Western Australia (WAWA) concern that existing inconsistent design criteria may result in constructed wetlands not meeting contaminant removal objectives. Three components to the study involved: design criteria compiled from a critical review of relevant literature, field assessment of selected sites with significant differences in design, and a design critique of those sites based on the compiled design criteria. …

The Paleoecologic Significance Of Paleocene Palynomorph Assemblages From The Ludow, Slope, And Cannonball Formations, Southwestern North Dakota, Timothy J. Kroeger
Theses and Dissertations
Paleoenvironment exerted control on the distribution of 133 palynomorph taxa from the Ludlow and Slope Formations and Boyce and Three V Tongues of the Cannonball Formation (Fort Union Group, I Paleocene) of southwestern North Dakota. The strata represent fluvial deltaic systems that prograded eastward into the Cannonball Sea. Depositional environments include distributary channels, crevasse splays, crevasse-splay feeder channels, lignite-producing swamps and/or marshes, lakes, brackish to slightly brackish bays, lake and bay fills, and marshes
Paleoenvironmentally sensitive palynomorph taxa were identified by subjective examination of pollen diagrams and objective analysis using detrended correspondence analysis. Two paleoenvironmentally restricted palynomorph associations were recognized. …
Reflected Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, Electron Spectroscopy, And X-Ray Diffraction Mineralogical Characterization Of Electric Arc Furnace (Eaf) Dusts, Ann M. Hagni
Doctoral Dissertations
"The secondary steel industry in the United States generates 600,000 tons of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust each year. Over 5,000,000 tons of EAF dust are generated annually world wide. The dust, which is removed from off-gasses from the high temperature furnaces, is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to be hazardous waste due to its leachable lead, cadmium, and chromium. In addition to hazardous components, EAF dust contains valuable zinc, averaging 19%. This study was initiated to determine the mineralogy and characterization of the dust to aid in the processing of the dust for metals recovery and rendering the …
Elimination Of Dissolved Sulfide Interference In The Flow-Injection Determination Of Sigma-Co2 By Addition Of Molybdate, Rigel L. Lustwerk, David J. Burdige
Elimination Of Dissolved Sulfide Interference In The Flow-Injection Determination Of Sigma-Co2 By Addition Of Molybdate, Rigel L. Lustwerk, David J. Burdige
OES Faculty Publications
A previously described flow injection method for the analysis of ΣCO2 included the addition of ZnCl2 to some samples before analysis in order to precipitate dissolved sulfide (which interferes with the method) as ZnS. However, the use of Zn2+ in samples with high concentrations of dissolved sulfide causes the coprecipitation of ZnCO3, and in our experience with this technique, ZnCO3 also precipitates even in the absence of dissolved sulfide. The addition of molybdate effectively complexes dissolved sulfide without interfering with the determination of ΣCO2 by this technique.
Seismic Stratigraphic Analysis Of The Upper Indus-Fan Complex A Model For Fan Development, Syed Firasat Shah
Seismic Stratigraphic Analysis Of The Upper Indus-Fan Complex A Model For Fan Development, Syed Firasat Shah
OES Theses and Dissertations
The seismic stratigraphic analysis of the upper Indus-Fan Complex has revealed the presence of six depositional sequences. Deposition of these sequences occurred primarily during the Miocene period. The Indus River drainage system that developed as a consequence of Himalayan orogeny transported the bulk of the sediments deposited in the Indus Fan. The distribution and thickness of the sequences of the upper Indus Fan are closely related to the canyon-channel systems. Seismic facies analysis of the slope has revealed the presence of a facies relationship that shows continued deepening from the time of deposition of slope fan to the latest deposits …
Geology Of An Archean Greenstone Belt At Point Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, Patrick Rowan Considine
Geology Of An Archean Greenstone Belt At Point Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, Patrick Rowan Considine
OES Theses and Dissertations
Several well-preserved circa 2.6 Ga Archean granite-greenstone belts are exposed in the Slave Province of Northwest Territories, Canada. At Point Lake, a "supracrustal sequence" comprised mainly of mafic volcanic and metasedimentary rocks lies over and east of a granitoid gneissic terrane. Field and laboratory studies have helped to clarify the petrography and structural relationships of this fold-and-thrust belt. Traditional models have suggested that granite-greenstone belts in the Slave Province are relict continental rifts in which volcanic and sedimentary rocks filled troughs in older sialic crust. However, this study supports a collisional model for the Slave Province, in which oceanic crust …
Indicators Of Nutrient Limited Plankton Growth In Lakes Near Mount Saint Helens, Washington, Kurt Davis Carpenter
Indicators Of Nutrient Limited Plankton Growth In Lakes Near Mount Saint Helens, Washington, Kurt Davis Carpenter
Dissertations and Theses
Several lakes located in the blast zone of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens were studied to determine if the plankton in the lakes were limited in their growth by nitrogen or phosphorus availability. Long term nutrient enrichment experiments were performed on lake water from five lakes and measures of chlorophyll-a, carbon fixation, and nutrient uptake were used to evaluate the extent of limitation. Nutrient concentrations, ratios, and uptake from 14 lakes provided additional evidence for limitation by nitrogen and/or phosphorus. The physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the lakes were also examined to monitor the return of these …

A Guide To Floodplain Cattle Fencing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Main Roads, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock published reports
A seminar and workshop was held at Fitzroy Crossing in October 1993 to address the consequences of flooding to landholders and communities.
Damage to flood plain fencing was identified as one of the major concerns to landholders.
An outcome from the workshop was the decision to draw on local knowledge and collate information on options for fence and floodgate designs.
This information was to be made available to land holders and other interested parties - hence this publication.
Sorption Of Chlorinated Organic Compounds By Sedimentary Rocks, Paul M. Mcginley, S. Kesaraju, Ronald D. Gruzesky
Sorption Of Chlorinated Organic Compounds By Sedimentary Rocks, Paul M. Mcginley, S. Kesaraju, Ronald D. Gruzesky
KWRRI Research Reports
The sorption of dichlorobenzene and trichlorobenzene on carbonate and shale rocks collected in Kentucky demonstrate that rock organic matter content is a good indicator of sorptive reactivity in rock systems. Although this is similar to soil systems, significant differences between sorption in rock and soil systems exist. Sorption isotherms on these rocks are nonlinear and sorption can be an order of magnitude higher than predicted using correlations from soils and their organic matter content. This sorption reaction could lead to significant concentration tailing during contaminant cleanup. Experimental elution of trichloroethylene from rock filled columns verified that cleanup times might be …
Subsurface Glacial Geology Of The Area Between The Tekonsha And Kalamazoo Moraines, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Kim Finkbeiner
Subsurface Glacial Geology Of The Area Between The Tekonsha And Kalamazoo Moraines, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Kim Finkbeiner
Masters Theses
Cross sections profiling the stratigraphy of the glacial sediments were created using the geological logs recorded on water well records. Glacial sediments in the study area comprise a large outwash complex between two moraines. The surficial landforms are the result of the last Wisconsinan advance and retreat through the area.
Cross sections contructed for this project reveal at least three major till units. An additional till unit contains a weathered soil sequence. Therefore, it is possible that this paleosol represents the Sangamon Interglacial period between the Wisconsinan and Illinoian stages. No obvious evidence of movement of the Saginaw Lobe remains …
