Profitable Canola Production In The Great Southern And Lakes District, Paul Carmody, Ashley Herbert Feb 2001

Profitable Canola Production In The Great Southern And Lakes District, Paul Carmody, Ashley Herbert

Bulletins 4000 -

The Canola industry has rapidly grown with a 10 fold increase in area sown in Western Australia over the four years from 1996-99.

The driving force behind this increase in area can be attributed to the successful adoption of weed control technology in Triazine Tolerant Canola.

By knowing the model of the limiting factors, which are usually; weed control, fertiliser practices, blackleg management, variety selection, seeding dates, seeding depths, insect control and swathing, we can make the right decisions and achieve the targeted profit.

To produce yield to potential, all factors need to be optimised, otherwise yields will be decreased …

This report is the compilation of a multi~year project that was directed at identifying the impact and possible mitigation solutions of non-point pollution from row crop agriculture in a watershed in the Arkansas Delta. The first part of the project involved an inventory of the condition of the major streams that make up the study watershed. The remainder of the project was focused at demonstrating and reporting best management nutrient and sediment runoff control practices (BMP) that could be implemented. The final assessment of the demonstration work is a GIS analysis that provides an overview of the effectiveness of these …

Refined Kinematics Of The Eastern California Shear Zone From Gps Observations, 1993-1998, M. Meghan Miller, Daniel J. Johnson, Timothy H. Dixon, Roy K. Dokka Feb 2001

Refined Kinematics Of The Eastern California Shear Zone From Gps Observations, 1993-1998, M. Meghan Miller, Daniel J. Johnson, Timothy H. Dixon, Roy K. Dokka

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Global Positioning System (GPS) results from networks spanning the Eastern California shear zone and adjacent Sierra Nevada block, occupied annually between 1993 and 1998, constrain plate margin kinematics. We use an elastic block model to relate GPS station velocities to long-term fault slip rate estimates. The model accounts for elastic strain accumulation on the San Andreas fault, as well as faults of the Eastern California shear zone. South of the Garlock fault, 14 mm/yr of dextral shear is distributed across the Eastern California shear zone. Some of this slip penetrates eastward into the Basin and Range, and a collective budget …

Long sediment cores recovered from the deep portions of Lake Titicaca are used to reconstruct the precipitation history of tropical South America for the past 25,000 years. Lake Titicaca was a deep, fresh, and continuously overflowing lake during the last glacial stage, from before 25,000 to 15,000 calibrated years before the present (cal yr B.P.), signifying that during the last glacial maximum (LGM), the Altiplano of Bolivia and Peru and much of the Amazon basin were wetter than today. The LGM in this part of the Andes is dated at 21,000 cal yr B.P., approximately coincident with the global LGM. …

Improvements In Turfgrass Color And Density Resulting From Comprehensive Soil Diagnostics, Matt Cordell, Jonathan Davis, David E. Longer Jan 2001

Improvements In Turfgrass Color And Density Resulting From Comprehensive Soil Diagnostics, Matt Cordell, Jonathan Davis, David E. Longer

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

There are roughly 220 golf courses in Arkansas, and as many as 50% of these courses were constructed using common bermudagrass fairways. Although resilient, common bermudagrass loses density and quality over time. In this experiment physical and chemical properties of the soil were analyzed to determine the causes of decline in turf quality observed on several fairways of a local golf course. Once a particular fairway was selected for study and preliminary soil sampling conducted, GS+, a geostatistical computer program, was used to map the location of certain chemical deficiencies. A moderate to severe Mg deficiency was detected throughout the …

Laser-Derived Particle Size Data From Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica: Implications For Sequence And Seismic Stratigraphy, Christopher R. Fielding, G. B. Dunbar, S. M. Bryce

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Seven hundred and nineteen samples from throughout the Cainozoic section in CRP-3 were analysed by a Malvern Mastersizer laser particle analyser, in order to derive a stratigraphic distribution of grain-size parameters downhole. Entropy analysis of these data (using the method of Woolfe & Michibayashi, 1995) allowed recognition of four groups of samples, each group characterised by a distinctive grain-size distribution. Group 1, which shows a multi-modal distribution, corresponds to mudrocks, interbedded mudrock/sandstone facies, muddy sandstones and diamictites. Group 2, with a sand-grade mode but showing wide dispersion of particle size, corresponds to muddy sandstones, a few cleaner sandstones and some …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) can be used as a precision farming diagnostic tool more efficiently if the factors influencing ECa spatial variability are understood. The objective of this study was to ascertain the causes of ECa spatial variability in soils developed in an environment with between 50 and 65 cm of annual rainfall. Soils at the research sites were formed on calcareous glacial till parent materials deposited approximately 10,000 years ago. Soil samples (0–15 cm) collected from at least a 60 by 60 m grid in four fields were analyzed for Olsen phosphorus (P) and …

Ecoregions Of Nebraska And Kansas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 2001

Ecoregions Of Nebraska And Kansas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. Ecoregions are directly applicable to the immediate needs of state agencies, including the development of biological criteria and water quality standards, and the establishment of management goals for nonpoint-source pollution. They are also relevant to integrated ecosystem management, an ultimate goal of most federal and state resource management agencies. The approach used to compile this map is based on the premise …

Use Of Engineering Geophysics To Investigate A Site For A Bridge Foundation, Paul Michaels Jan 2001

Use Of Engineering Geophysics To Investigate A Site For A Bridge Foundation, Paul Michaels

CGISS Publications and Presentations

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) commissioned a geophysical study to aid in the design of a replacement for an existing concrete span bridge. Because the river current was too swift to place geophones in the river, the solution was to shoot p-wave profiles in a reciprocal geometry (phones on land, shots in the river). In addition to the refraction work, a down-hole seismic profile was acquired to calibrate the surface data. Geotechnical boreholes drilled on the north and south river banks detected a laterally varying soil profile. The south-bank hole encountered 9.1 m of granular overburden, followed by 8.5 m …

Extent And Impacts Of Dryland Salinity, C E. Mcconnell, R Short Jan 2001

Extent And Impacts Of Dryland Salinity, C E. Mcconnell, R Short

Resource management technical reports

The extent and impact of dryland salinity in Western Australia was based on analysis of groundwater depth and trend and the risk of shallow watertables is derived from these two attributes. As dryland salinity is caused by shallow watertables, the risk of salinity is inferred from the risk of shallow watertables.

Palaeoecology Of The Middle Cambrian Raymond Quarry Fauna, Burgess Shale, British Columbia, Matthew Galen Devereux Jan 2001

Palaeoecology Of The Middle Cambrian Raymond Quarry Fauna, Burgess Shale, British Columbia, Matthew Galen Devereux

Digitized Theses

An assemblage if over 9000 systematically collected fossils from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale was analyzed in order to resolve the palaeoecology. Sediment and fossil evidence both show that the constituent fauna was largely autochthonous. The 'standing crop' of organisms preserved with each burial event was affected by variable taphonomic factors both laterally and temporally, but information loss appears to have been minimized. An autecological review of the trophic nucleus provides new insights with regard to behavior of the organisms, including life habits and feeding strategies. Unlike their modern representatives, priapulid worms (or at least Ottoia) appear to have …

Citizen Knowledge And Perception Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Management, Natalie R. Sexton, Ayeisha Brinson, Phadrea D. Ponds, Kurt Cline, Berton L. Lamb Jan 2001

Citizen Knowledge And Perception Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Management, Natalie R. Sexton, Ayeisha Brinson, Phadrea D. Ponds, Kurt Cline, Berton L. Lamb

United States Geological Survey: Publications

What do citizens know about black-tailed prairie dogs, and where do they get their information? When management decisions need to be made regarding an animal such as the black-tailed prairie dog, an understanding of the species and its relationship to humans is necessary. This includes knowing the biology of the animal, where it lives, and how it interacts with other animals. But it is equally important for those making decisions about the species to understand citizens’ knowledge and perceptions so managers can effectively communicate with the public and help the public participate in planning and decision making activities. Unfortunately, what …

Occurrence And Potential Adverse Effects Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds In Streambed Sediment, United States, 1992–1995, Thomas J. Lopes, Edward T. Furlong Jan 2001

Occurrence And Potential Adverse Effects Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds In Streambed Sediment, United States, 1992–1995, Thomas J. Lopes, Edward T. Furlong

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The occurrence and potential adverse effects of select semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in streambed sediment were assessed at 536 sites in 20 major river basins across the United States from 1992 to 1995. Fifty-six SVOCs were detected at one or more sites, and one or more SVOCs were detected at 71% of sites. The northeastern and Great Lakes regions and large metropolitan areas have the highest SVOC concentrations. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected most frequently and at the highest concentrations. Concentrations of PAHs and phthalates were about 10 times higher at sites influenced by urban activities than at sites …

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday Jan 2001

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Mostly stabilized late Holocene eolian sands on the Southern High Plains of the United States were studied to determine their origins and to assess whether present dune stability depends more strongly on sediment supply, sediment availability, or transport limitations. Geomorphic, sedimentological, and geochemical trends indicate that late Holocene dunes formed under westerly paleowinds, broadly similar to those of today. Mineralogical and geochemical data indicate that the most likely source for the sands is not the Pecos River valley, but the Pleistocene Blackwater Draw Formation, an older, extensive eolian deposit in the region. These observations suggest that new sand is supplied …

Calcareous Nannofossils From Cape Roberts Project Drillhole Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David K. Watkins, S. W. Wise Jr., G. Villa Jan 2001

Calcareous Nannofossils From Cape Roberts Project Drillhole Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David K. Watkins, S. W. Wise Jr., G. Villa

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Fossil specimens of the exclusively oceanic calcareous nannoplankton were found only in the upper 200 m of the Cape Roberts Project 3 (CRP-3) cores. These assemblages are depauperate and sporadic in occurrence. The majority of the assemblages contain fewer than 4 species, indicating a severe palaeoecological restriction. The clear domination of these assemblages by reticulofenestrid species, coupled with the almost total exclusion of Coccolithus pelagicus, indicates cold surface water conditions in the Victoria Land Basin during the lives of these poor algae. These cold surface water conditions, perhaps coupled with abnormal surface water chemistry, excluded almost all of the …

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2001

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many issues of water-resources management rely on modeling of ground-water/surface-water interactions, and streambed hydraulic conductivity is a key parameter controlling the water fluxes across the stream/aquifer interface. However, in central and western Nebraska, this parameter is generally undefined. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Nebraska Platte River Cooperative Hydrology Study Group, performed slug tests at 15 steam sites in the Platte, Republican, and Little Blue River watersheds to determine the hydraulic conductivity of streambeds in central and western Nebraska. Slug tests were completed at several discrete depth intevals using pneumatic or mechanical methods, and the water-level response was …

Chronostratigraphy Of The Crp-3 Drillhole, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, M J. Hannah, F Florindo, David M. Harwood, Christopher R. Fielding, Cape Roberts Science Team

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

An 823 m thick glaciomarine Cenozoic section sitting unconformably on the Lower Devonian Beacon Supergroup was recovered in CRP –3. This paper reviews the chronostratigraphical constraints for the Cenozoic section. Between 3 and 480.27 mbsf 23 unconformity bounded cycles of sediment were recorded. Each unconformity is thought to represent a hiatus of uncertain duration. Four magnetozones have been recognised from the Cenozoic section. The record is complex with several “tiny wiggles” recorded throughout. Biostratigraphical or Sr ages, which could be used to link these magnetozones to the magnetic polarity time scale are restricted to the upper 190 m of sediment. …
