Diatoms From Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Sam L. Van Landingham Jan 1965

Diatoms From Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Sam L. Van Landingham

International Journal of Speleology

Samples collected in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, revealed the presence of a diversified but not too abundant diatom community in the cave. As the material was not subjected to culturing experiments but was investigated immediately after arrival, both in native and permanent preparations, it was possible to: 1. ascertain that the majority of the diatoms contained well developed, apparently healthy and functioning chloroplasts and 2. to get a rough estimate of the actual number of specimens present in a microhabitat. The identifications resulted in the recognition of 16 diatom taxa of which possibly 4 are new to science. Further studies are, …

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale Mar 1964

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Chemical determinations of calcium and magnesium carbonates, iron, Kjeldahl nitrogen, and sulfate with supplementary petrographic thin-section and insoluble-residue studies and differential thermal analyses were used to study a Virgilian sedimentary cycle in the upper Madera Limestone of New Mexico. In 120 meters of section 4 cycles were recognized; one of these was studied in detail. Cyclic subsidence and subsequent basin filling produced a sequence of gross environmental changes accomplished by organisms in a definite ecological succession. Biologic communities were progressively modified by the changing marine sedimentary cycle. The cycles of the upper Madera Limestone begin with a lower fusulinid claystone, …

The Microvegetation Of A Small Ice-Cave In Hungary, Erzsébet Kol Jan 1964

The Microvegetation Of A Small Ice-Cave In Hungary, Erzsébet Kol

International Journal of Speleology

The algal flora of a small, artificial, ice-cave located in Northern Hungary is described. In this cave 23 species of algae (see in Table 3) were found of which the Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta occurred with approximately equal number. (9 vers. 11) It was found that the primary limiting factor influencing the penetration of the algae into the cave is the low temperature and not the lack of light.

The question of the settling of algae into the caves is debated.

Naissance De La Biospéologie, Constantin Motas Jan 1964

Naissance De La Biospéologie, Constantin Motas

International Journal of Speleology

Modern biospeleology dates from May 15, 1907, with the publication of Racovitza’s “Essai sur les problèmes biospéologiques.” In this paper he posed - if he did not answer - every question raised by life in the subterranean world. He outlined a program of biospeological research, made an analysis of the conditions of existence in the subterranean domain and their influence upon cavernicoles, discussed the evolution of subterranean biota, their geographical distribution, etc. Racovitza modified Schiner’s (1854) classification, dividing cavernicoles into troglobites, troglophiles and trogloxenes, terms later adopted by a great number of biospeologists. The “Essai”, called “Racovitza’s famous manifest” by …

The Diagenetic Origin Of The Dolomites, Chert, And Pyrite In The Jefferson City Formation., Erik Hans Schot Jan 1963

The Diagenetic Origin Of The Dolomites, Chert, And Pyrite In The Jefferson City Formation., Erik Hans Schot

Masters Theses

"Diagenesis designates all modifications which a sediment undergoes during and following deposition and prior to complete lithification, metamorphism, deep burial, and orogenesis.

Probably the dolomites of the Jefferson City Formation resulted from alteration at, or below the sea floor or the depositional interface and during diagenesis. Diagenetic dolomitization or penecontemporaneous alteration presumably involves a reaction between the calcium carbonate sediments at/or below the sea floor or the depositional interface and magnesium salts in solution or suspension in the basal layer of contacting sea water, or in the initial pr connate water trapped in the sediment.

The cherts of the Jefferson …

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell Nov 1962

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

It is now recognized that water pollution is an important problem, that it becomes more widespread and serious as population and industry expand, and that something must be done if aquatic life resource are to be saved and their productivity maintained. In the past there has been a great deal of uncertainty in approaching this situation and a general lack of understanding of the details and ramification of the overall problem. In the efforts for the abatement of pollution, only a few clearcut objectives have been established. Knowledge is lacking as to what the objectives should be. There is still …

Interbasin Movement Of Ground Water At The Nevada Test Site, Isaac J. Winograd Mar 1962

Interbasin Movement Of Ground Water At The Nevada Test Site, Isaac J. Winograd

Publications (WR)

The present paper presents hydraulic evidence for the interbasin circulation of ground water through carbonate rocks of Paleozoic age at the Nevada Test Site. An integral part of this evidence is the discovery that aquifers in alluvium and tuff, formerly thought to be the principal aquifers at the Test Site, are semiperched above a thick tuffaceous aquiclude that separates them from the carbonate rocks.

This paper is based on one of the studies being made by the Geological
/="/">Survey for the Atomic Energy Commission. These studies seek to evaluate
/="/">the risk that may arise if ground water should …

The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen May 1961

The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This era has been termed the atomic or space age. The greatest concern of most people seems to be centered around survival from the destruction and suffering that might be caused by atomic and nuclear weapons. However, along with this, the world is confronted with perhaps a greater disaster--a potential calamity seldom realized by most people, yet a problem which grows more serious in the world each year--a tragedy which would probably be worse than destruction from nuclear weapons. This encroaching catastrophe is starvation.

Even today the majority of the people in the world do not have enough food. Each …

The Effects Of Certain Environmental And Biological Factors On Rally Calling In The Chukar Partridge, H. Warrington Williams May 1961

The Effects Of Certain Environmental And Biological Factors On Rally Calling In The Chukar Partridge, H. Warrington Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Naturalists for many years have known that birds sing most at dawn and at dusk, but to which of many physical variables they are responding has not been completely determined. This problem has taken on importance in the field of wildlife management because calling rate has been used as an index of abundance for numerous game birds, namely the Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus (Kimball, 1949); the Mourning Dove, Zenaidura macroura (McClure, 1939); the Bobwhite Quail, Colinus virginianus (Bennitt, 1951; Rosene, 1957): and the Woodcock, Philohela minor (Pitelka, 1943).

Moisture And Temperature Effects On The Transformations Of Nitrogen From Applied Ammonium Sulfate In A Calcareous Soil, John Keith Justice

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen has commonly been a deficient element in the cultivated soils of the world since the beginning of agriculture. The general acceptance of the practice of using manures as a means of increasing plant growth, as shown by the records of ancient civilizations, attest to this fact. Since the time of von Liebig there has been an increasing awareness of the importance of this deficiency in soils. As a result of a better understanding of the problem and the increasing availability of commercial forms of nitrogen, a rapid increase in the use of nitrogen fertilizers has taken place in the …
