Spatial Distribution Of Lead In Soil And Sediment In Iqaluit, Northwest Territories And Links With Human Health, Liisa Ann Peramaki Jan 1997

Spatial Distribution Of Lead In Soil And Sediment In Iqaluit, Northwest Territories And Links With Human Health, Liisa Ann Peramaki

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Baffin Regional Health Board has recently expressed concern over lead poisoning in Iqaluit, NWT, manifested by low haemoglobin levels in children. Several studies in temperate regions have demonstrated links between environmental lead and human health. However, little is known about these links in a permafrost environment. While humans are exposed to lead via a number of different pathways, soils and sediments are two major pathways. The purpose of this study is to determine the spatial distribution of soil and sediment-associated lead in Iqaluit and to assess probable pathways between high lead levels and children. The research hypothesis is that …

Fluid Patterns, Sediment Pathways And Woody Obstructions In The Pine River, Angus, Ontario, John T. Beebe Jan 1997

Fluid Patterns, Sediment Pathways And Woody Obstructions In The Pine River, Angus, Ontario, John T. Beebe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The objective of this research was to determine the effects that woody obstructions have on flow patterns and sediment pathways in a sand-bed river in Central Ontario. The Pine River near Angus, a tributary of the Nottawasaga River, was chosen because it contained a number of woody obstructions to flow from which to choose study sites. Two reaches, one containing a trunk oriented in the direction of flow, were chosen as the study reaches. Sampling of fluid speeds through the study reaches showed that the cross-stream obstruction acted to slow fluid as it approached and exited the obstruction zone, while …

A Sensitivity Analysis Of The Hydrology Of The Bow Valley Above Banff, Alberta Using The Ubc Watershed Model, Alexi Zawadzki Jan 1997

A Sensitivity Analysis Of The Hydrology Of The Bow Valley Above Banff, Alberta Using The Ubc Watershed Model, Alexi Zawadzki

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Snow and ice meltwater constitutes a significant portion of westem Canada's water resources for residential, industrial and agricultural uses. As a consequence, temporal variations in climate will have a marked effect on the local hydrology of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, especially as glaciers, glacierettes and snow packs decrease in size or melt out. It is therefore very important for hydrologists to accurately understand the climatic sensitivity of glacierized watersheds in order to predict and prepare for potentially dramatic variations in the future water budget. This thesis proposes a methodology for the estimation of the hydrological response of a large, temperate, …

An Assessment Of Hydrological Process And Landform Change: Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories, Ronald Brad Hill Jan 1997

An Assessment Of Hydrological Process And Landform Change: Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories, Ronald Brad Hill

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Slave River Delta, 61˚15'N, 113˚30'W, is located at the mouth of the Slave River in the southeast arm of Canada's Great Slave Lake. Although the delta itself lies some 1600 km downstream from the W.A.C. Bennett Dam at Hudson's Hope, British Columbia, the mean annual discharge and sediment load of the Slave River have decreased by 16% and 33% respectively since regulation. Such alterations in the Slave River flow regime have significant implications for the growth of the River Delta since the transfer of sediment to the delta front is one of the most important factors in the landform’s …

Residence Time Of Groundwater Issuing From The South Rim Aquifer In The Eastern Grand Canyon, Jim Fitzgerald May 1996

Residence Time Of Groundwater Issuing From The South Rim Aquifer In The Eastern Grand Canyon, Jim Fitzgerald

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the eastern Grand Canyon, secondary porosity created by north trending faults, folds, and breccia pipes, facilitates groundwater flow through the South Rim carbonate aquifer. Springs associated with the South Rim Aquifer have low 3H concentrations, [Ca2+]/[Mg2+] rations close to unity, and variable uranium concentrations. For a geochemical comparison, springs are subcategorized on the basis of geology and discharge. Type I springs are associated with high-angle normal faults and have high discharge rates. These springs discharge Ca2+ - Mg2+, HCO3- waters, have 3H concentrations <2 TR, and 234U/238U activity …

Trace Element Analysis Of Selected Springs In The Virgin River Basin, Mary A. Yelken May 1996

Trace Element Analysis Of Selected Springs In The Virgin River Basin, Mary A. Yelken

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Spring water from 23 springs in and near the Virgin River Basin (southwestern Utah, northwestern Arizona, and southeastern Nevada) was collected and analyzed for chemical concentrations. Trace elements and major ion chemistry was used to determine the potential for utilizing water chemistry to provide information on spring water source and flow pathways. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), rare earth element (REE) normalization patterns, and mineral equilibrium modeling (PHREEQE) techniques were used to analyze the data set. Four major spring water groups were displayed by the PCA, based on similarities in water chemistry. The analyses suggest that spring water chemistry is a …

Mechanical And Chemical Weathering Of Periglacial And Non-Periglacial Forms On The Eastern Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island (Northwest Territories), Cameron Lawrence Chadwick Jan 1996

Mechanical And Chemical Weathering Of Periglacial And Non-Periglacial Forms On The Eastern Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island (Northwest Territories), Cameron Lawrence Chadwick

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in the mechanical and chemical weathering of different periglacial and non-periglacial forms on the eastern Fosheim Peninsula. Forms studied include: solifluction lobes, non-sorted stripes, polygons, mudboils, wetted sloped, dry ridge and wet meadow. Most sites including the periglacial forms of solifluction lobes, non-sorted stripes, and polygons show signs of chemical and mechanical weathering. The weathering found at all sites was minute but may be significant given the slow rates of weathering in this environment. The individual environmental variables of moisture and temperature levels do not appear to have a direct …

Using Digital Elevation Models To Measure The Surface And Volumetric Change Of Athabasca Glacier, Alberta, Canada, 1919-1979, James Robb Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Athabasca Glacier (52˚12'N, 117˚14'W) located at the Alberta-British Columbia border was studied to quantify its volumetric, area and elevation changes below 2400 m between 1919 and 1979. The data sources consist of maps produced using aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry in the years between 1919 and 1979. The maps were digitized and converted into raster digital elevation models (DEMs), the manipulation of which allowed values of surface and volumetric change to be calculated. These DEMs showed that between 1919 and 1979 the glacier lost 2.344 x 108m3 of volume and receded more than 1 km. Each of the source maps …

Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid Jan 1995

Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid

Theses : Honours

This study was conducted to review effective design criteria for constructed wetlaads treating urban stormwater and to assess the design features of local constructed wetlands in relation to the theoretically ideal design features. The study was generated out of Water Authority of Western Australia (WAWA) concern that existing inconsistent design criteria may result in constructed wetlands not meeting contaminant removal objectives. Three components to the study involved: design criteria compiled from a critical review of relevant literature, field assessment of selected sites with significant differences in design, and a design critique of those sites based on the compiled design criteria. …

Hydrometeorological Investigations On A Small Valley Glacier In The Sawtooth Range, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Paul Michael Wolfe Jan 1995

Hydrometeorological Investigations On A Small Valley Glacier In The Sawtooth Range, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Paul Michael Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Hydrometeorological techniques were employed during the summer of 1993 to study a small (4.7km2) valley glacier in the Sawtooth Range, Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories. The annual 1992-93 mass balance for Quviagivaa Glacier (unofficial name), and for the adjacent Nirukittuq Glacier (unofficial name) was -532mm and -530mm water equivalent respectively. The equilibrium line altitude was above the upper limit of the glaciers due to the exceptional warmth of the summer. Slight marginal shrinking in the areal extent of Quviagivaa Glacier since 1959 suggests that strongly negative mass balances such as those recorded in 1993 are not indicative of the …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Genetic characteristics of 14 Rhizobium and 9 Bradyrhizobium mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa)-nodulating strains isolated from surface (0- to 0.5-rn) and deep (4- to 6-m) rooting zones were determined in order to examine the hypothesis that surface- and deep-soil symbiont populations were related but had become genetically distinct during adaptation to contrasting soil conditions. To examine genetic diversity, Southern blots of PstI-digested genomic DNA were sequentially hybridized with the nodDABC region of Rhizobium meliloti, the Klebsiella pneumoniae nifHDK region encoding nitrogenase structural genes, and the chromosome- localized ndvB region ofR. meliloti. Plasmid profile and host plant nodulation assays were also made. Isolates …

OES Theses and Dissertations

Lithologic analysis of twenty-one core samples from a well near Gloucester, Virginia, when compared to published descriptions of formations occurring in the study area, indicates the presence of five formations. From oldest to youngest these units are the Aquia (late Paleocene), Nanjemoy (early Eocene), Chickahominy (late Eocene), Old Church (late Oligocene and early Miocene), and Eastover (late Miocene) formations. Comparison of the stratigraphic ranges of key planktic and benthic foraminifera from each of the core samples shows chronological agreement with previously published ages for each of these formations.

Paleoenvironmental analysis of each of the formations in the well is based …

Iceberg Severity Off The Canadian East Coast (An Analysis Of The 1991 Iceberg Season), Jerome Edward Salloum Jan 1993

Iceberg Severity Off The Canadian East Coast (An Analysis Of The 1991 Iceberg Season), Jerome Edward Salloum

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The 1991 iceberg season on the Grand Banks was the second most severe on record. Over a 218-day period, a total of 2002 icebergs traversed latitude 48°N. Percentages of sightings involving medium and large icebergs greatly exceeded normal values. Thus, the season was mxtstanding, not only in terms of flux numbers, but in terms of total ice mass delivered. Assuming that this flux anomaly is the product of more efficient advection and less efficient ablation and notzsome sudden surge in upstream berg production, the study investigates various atmospheric and sea surface conditions as contributing factors to a near record iceberg …

The Role Of The Vadose Zone In The Generation Of Runoff From A Headwater Basin In The Canadian Shield, Robert Alex Maclean Jan 1992

The Role Of The Vadose Zone In The Generation Of Runoff From A Headwater Basin In The Canadian Shield, Robert Alex Maclean

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Hydrological processes occurring within the vadose zone, especially in heterogeneous soils and tills typical of the Canadian shield, are not well understood. This research investigates the importance of the vadose zone in a small headwater basin (Harp 4-21) in the Canadian shield with respect to the generation of stream runoff quantity and quality during episodic rainfall and snowmelt events. The study focused specifically on: firstly the effect of variable antecedent moisture conditions on water-table and stream response, secondly, the significance of the stored vadose water in water extracted from a rising water-table, and thirdly the significance of preferential flowpathways in …

Investigation Of Hydrometeorological Relationships, Pasu Glacier Basin, Northern Pakistan, Bob Boyce Jan 1992

Investigation Of Hydrometeorological Relationships, Pasu Glacier Basin, Northern Pakistan, Bob Boyce

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Records of air temperature, global radiation and discharge from the Pasu Glacier basin in the Upper Indus River Basin have been examined with a view to developing a modest understanding of the simple physically based processes in action within this globally extreme mountainous region. Some glaciological data are also reported but in a preliminary manner. Relationships between air temperature characteristics, global radiation and discharge were investigated using correlation techniques. Daily average air temperatures recorded at the highest meteorological station, Parundas (4200m), provide the strongest degree of association with discharge. The data shows that this highly glacierised Karakoram basin exhibits similar …

Hydrologic Investigations Of Meltwaters Draining Gornergletscher And Findelengletscher, Switzerland Using Hydrochemistry And Isotopic Analyses, Robert A. Metcalfe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the hydrological dynamics of Gornerglestcher and Findelengletscher, Switzerland by performing hydrochemical analyses on the bulk runoff exiting the portal of these two alpine glaciers. The hydrochemical analyses utilized electrical conductivity, as a surrogate for total dissolved solids, to determine the flow of routing of the bulk runoff (englacial or subglacial as defined by Collins, 1979b) and 8^18O to determine the contributions of pre-event and event water to bulk runoff during precipitation events. The pre-event water was defined as a combination of snow meltwater, ice meltwater and groundwater as these flow components could …
