During recent years many of the population centers of Indiana have undergone growth that has resulted in expansion of urban uses into land that has been largely rural. As a result of that expansion, conflicts have arisen between expanding urban uses and the agricultural and mineral resource uses of land that lies near the centers of population. In addition, uncontrolled use of flood plains, steep slopes, and areas of soft sediments and high water tables has caused inconvenience and financial loss to individuals and industries that unknowingly have built structures in those places. "A surficial materials classification system has been designed to fit the needs of a geologist in mapping and classifying surficial materials. The system developed in this study is intended primarily for analysis of surficial materials where time-stratigraphic markers are not applicable or recognized. Primary classification is based on fabric and mode of origin supplemented by data on engineering and pedologic properties.

Several types of classification systems presently exist for use in soil investigations. Only three of these systems have found widespread acceptance, two serving the engineering profession and the other the needs of the soil scientist. These systems are not …

The results of a survey, concerning environmental education taken of the educators of the Nelson County School System, indicated a need for environmental education workshops and classes.

The status of environmental education in the nation and in Kentucky were studied and compared. A research was done of the status of environmental education in Nelson County, and implications were drawn for implementing environmental education in the Nelson County School System.

A tentative program for implementing environmental education in the Nelson Country schools was given, and a bibliography of resources and materials to be used in said program was included.

A Field Study Of Infiltration On Various Agricultural Soils, Stephen J. Stephen

The purpose of the study was to ascertain if infiltration and temperature varied significantly among the selected soil types of the Smithfield, Otonabee, Wendigo and Farmington Series. These data were gathered from field tests performed during the summer months in Ontario and Victoria Counties.

A stopwatch was used to measure the number of seconds that were required for 0.8 inches of water to disappear into the soil inside a 4 inch diameter single ring infiltrometer which had been placed one inch into the soil surface. The soil temperature was recorded at the same time.

Ic0 flow directions on the glaciated Appalachian Plateau in central New York were from the Adirondack Hountains. This is demonstrated by both striae directions and erratic provena..-1ce studies. No evidence for more than one Wisconsin glaciation as suggested by Rich (1935) could be found. Theories for local glaciation during the decline and after the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet were also unsubstantiated. The East and West Branches Delaware River had different styles of daglaciation. The West Branch is characterized by zones of stagnation. This study of the Fermo-Pennsylvanian Minnelusa Group in North Dakota was designed to clarify the stratigraphy, illustrate association of depositional environments, and to relate the geologic history and economic potential of these strata.

The Minnelusa Group is defined here to include strata above the unconformity on the Madison and Big Snowy Groups and below the Opeche Formation. The Minnelusa Group in North Dakota contains the Tyler, Alaska Bench, Amsden and Broom Creek Formations. The Amsden has been divided into three marker defined lithozones designated, in ascending order, Medora, Dickinson, and Bismarck.

Studies are presently underway to determine the technical and economic feasibility of various Arctic marine transportation systems, including ice-breaker super-tankers and submarine tankers. An important consideration in these studies is the design and construction of marine terminal facilities which will be suited to the unique problems of the Arctic. Factors which will significantly affect the design of proposed marine terminals include:

1) bathymetric configuration of the continental shelf;
2) influence of moving pack ice on artificial structures, both at the air-water interface and along the bottom;

Climatological, pedological and faunal investigations conducted in the Upper Midwest and the Ozark Highlands indicate that the environment to which man in the Ozarks was adapting over the past 12,000 years has undergone several major shifts, beginning with a cool-moist boreal forest situation followed by a period of warming and aridness resulting in prairie and deciduous forest climaxes and subsequently, in the last 4000-5000 years, change to the pattern reflected by present conditions.

In order to plan the future development of the Canadian Shield within a conceptual framework as suggested by the Mid-Canada Corridor concept, both the presently developed and potential, natural resources of this area need to be evaluated for knowledgeable development and management. To this purpose, various areas of nickel sulphide deposits within the area of the Canadian Shield have been studied with the object of determining similar sequences of intrusive events and their spatial relationships.

The investigation primarily concerns contemporary geomorphological features and processes in the Upper Indus Basin, Past work, and theories of the denudation chronology of the region are described, and the broad climatic and geological setting. The bulk of the work examines characteristics of weathering, slopes and mass-movements, glacial and fluvial features in the Biafo Gyang area of the Central Karakoram. The nature and role of glacier surges and natural damming in the region are discussed. The Upper Cretaceous Greenhorn Limestone is composed of intercalated agrillaceous limestone and calcareous shale beds which crop out over much of the Western Interior. The Greenhorn was deposited in late Cenomanian and early Turonian time in a westward transgressing sea. In New Mexico the age is early Turonian. The edge of deposition extends as far south as Capitan and Carthage, northward through western Bernalillio County, and northwest through Toadlena.

This paper presents a study of the correlation between soil colloidal content and soil productiveness and hence a measure of the value of colloidal content in determining site quality. The character of this investigation also permitted incidental observation and comment on the relative value of organic matter, soil acidity, and soil type and class as similar measures. The findings are directly applicable to the forest soils of southern Connecticut and, more particularly, to such of these soils as occur commonly in the vicinity of New Haven. By determining the moisture content of carefully selected soil samples taken at various depths down to three feet, the moisture content of soils in the forest and in the open have been compared. The soils investigated were similar in their mechanical properties. Part I is an investigation of the effect of forest cover on the amount of water in the soil over the growing season and its availability. Part II is an investigation of the effect of root competition on the available water supply of forest soils.
